how much memory do you have in the computer and how much is free? the general things that cause freeze up is low memory or infections. Have you run a scan with updated malwarebytes?

open your task manager control alt delete and look at processes and see what is using up the most resources too it could be something is hogging your processor.

How many items do you usually try opening in PSP? Photo editing software can be very greedy. How much free space on the hard drive? Click Start, click My computer and it should tell you the free space. Much plugged into USB ports?

I have 29.9 GB of free space. I have updated and ran a scan with Malware. Where is my Task Manager??

what is your total RAM (memory) amount on the pc

your task manger is what opens when you hit control alt delete, once there you can view different tabs, you can see what in particular is using up the most cpu cycles.

That's not a lot of RAM for what you're trying to do. You're sending your computer into overload! Trying to drive a truck with a Mini's motor. I suggest doubling your RAM - your local computer shop can install it for you.

I would also suggest doing a complete clean-up of your system. This will free up a lot of space on your HD, and also improve the efficiency overall, as well as reducing the load on your memory a little.

If you use PSP a lot then Daisy has hit it right on, shortage of memory. Even more so if the video is built into the motherboard.

You can use the Crucial link below to scan you computer and tell you which type is right for your machine. If you do a lot of graphic work and intend to keep this computer for a long while yet you might see if the motherboard will support 2 gigs of RAM. Tigerdirect have 1 gig sticks for under $40 so you could well find a matched pair for under $80 if the funds are up to that kind of expenditure.

yep you definitely need more ram I would run a belarc which will tell you exactly what is on the pc and how many free slots you have to add memory and how much you can add, it is easy to add ram and it is fairly cheap, I buy mine at newegg for about $20 for a gig for kingston.

I think Daisyduckworth found a very good site for those who wish to learn about cleaning up the internals of a computer.

It is a comprehensive write up giving the reader options on which program they might consider. They use bold font in the right places to highlight things they feel need extra careful reading.

My only (tiny) beef is the final segment where they refer to "Flash Cookies or LSOs" - there is no explanation of what an LSO might be. As the tutorial is designed for less knowledgeable users that is not so good so I have included a link below to Wikpedia for those who may be curious.

I have deleted a lot of programs I no longer use and about 1,000 graphics, this has given me some more space.
I see where I have Microsoft Office 2000SP-1 and
Microsoft Office Premium and they take up 384MB and 379MB
I don't know how to even open these programs. I only
use Microsoft word. Should I delete these programs or will the affect other programs?? One big ole dumb lady here!!

I did notice the lack of Info re LSO, so I googled LSO and only found sites about Landing Service Operators. Didn't need that.

But since LSOs referred to Adobe, and under that was a link to Online Flash Cookie Removal, I clicked on that and found Flash Player Help, under which I found Local Storage Settings, where I found a link to Local Storage Options.

You are much swifter than I; you went directly to Wikipedia..

(I did check on the reference to wiki, which was mentioned. duh!)

arosegirl if you use word do not delete your office that is part of office, they are very expensive programs so I would not think you want to delete them.

Make sure once you delete things and know you are sure you want them gone (wait a day or so) then also empty your recycle bin or it will not free up any room.

However how many programs and the amount of space taken up on the pc is not what is slowing you down, they are taking up space on your hard drive, we are talking about the amount of RAM memory that you have on the pc and in your specs you said you had 504MB RAM that is a very low amount you should have at least 1 gig which is double what you have. Run the belarc which is free and it will tell you what kind of RAM you need and how much you can put in the pc. Once you run the belarc tell us the model number and brand of the pc so we can show you the type of ram you need.

running the belarc will tell you which configuration you currently have in your pc to let you know what you need to buy, do you have one stick or 2 currently etc.
