CCleaner-using registry fixer?

I see upon using CCleaner for its obvious purpose that it has options! Whee!

Specifically- should I be running the registry option? When I invited it to scan it (almost instantly) came up with about a dozen things, but I closed it without asking it to do the fixes because I don't understand what's happening.

I want to assume that I should have it carry on with the fix, but don't know if that's a more advanced decision than I am qualified to make. Help please?

I personally never advise the use of any type of registry cleaner period unless done by a registry specialist.

If you don't understand the data being presented leave the Windows Registry alone,

A broken Registry or corrupt Registry is a broken Windows! using that option will have little or no effect on the performance of the machine.

Most experts agree avoid cleaning the Registry...

I have never had that problem with Ccleaner, but if you can bring up that site again by typing the URL in or whatever, you could again tell your browser to make that your home page. You know, using Tools>Internet Options> General (tab) in I.E., and probably most browsers have a provision for setting the home page.

Gillian you should most certainly have created a backup of your registry before proceeding with the cleaning. This allows the opportunity (maybe) to return to the original state if the cleaning goes wrong. It will create a copy of the registry only and is quite small. To me cleaning the registry is a last resort if I am having problems and no other type of clean up or test seems to cure the ills. It is certainly not a casual thing to be used like an anti spyware program for example. As regards Ccleaner, I use it at the default settings and find it an excellent program.

genes gave good advice. Start - run - type regedit - OK Open file at the left top - click export - Go my documents - For Save type Backup - Save. To use your Registry Backup. Start - run - type regedit - OK Open File - Import - right click your Registry Backup - Click Merge. Don't be moving it to different locations. SmithFraudFix can be a big help in cleaning up your computer. Click number 2 and Enter. It also offers to clean the registry in the latter part of it's process. The default settings are the ones that the application comes with. If you haven't used it in some time, it will probably tell you there is a newer version. Download and install the latest version and use it without fear. Like azinoh I have used both the clener and registry tool with no problem, always backing up the registry. This is just one step in my routing maintenance before I defrag.

Wow. Thanks to you both.

I do NOT understand registry and always avoid regedit or anything like it, but I have seen it done. I had good reason to suspect it was for more advanced users, ay?
