Organize your desktop items in the order that you would like them to stay. Make sure they are all in the correct spot before you continue the process. Right-click with your mouse anywhere on your desktop. Select "View" on the options tab that comes up. Select "Desktop Items" next and uncheck the line that says "Auto Arrange" by clicking on it. Click "Align to Grid" to align your desktop icons in their current position. Click "Show Desktop Items" to make any further changes and finalize the positions of your desktop icons. Click "Apply" in the desktop menu and your icons will be locked in their current position the next time you turn off, reboot or reconfigure your computer.

DA... thanks. That works at least for one test. So dose Control +/- on the active text. Strange that "Compose" doesn't affect font size while Display does. Seem either or both could be the needed function - but when composing it is Display that determines the font size. I'll Google for the pain size. Sorry to put you to that extra work/test but when I can't figure out some computer question my first thought is gardenweb/computer... not Google/Web.

I basically did the same thing, but took it one step furtherÂI created a folder in my C drive, named it "shortcuts" (or whatever you choose) then created sub folders in that folder and properly name them. Then, I right clicked on the lower toolbar and selected "toolbars" then "new toolbar" and browsed for my "shortcuts" folder and selected it. The end result is a very organized system. Here is my example. You could have a folder named "games" that would show small icons, like in the start menu.

Katy what you really need to do now is decide if in fact it is the monitor or the video card that may be quitting on you. This can be done if you can borrow a monitor from a friend or relative for a few minutes. You would not want to buy a new monitor only to discover it really is the video card that is playing up. If the monitor is as old as you suggest you would be wise not to spend any money trying to fix it. Better to buy a new one and have a year of warranty if in fact it proves to be the monitor.
