Modem-Dial Up Problem

here is the situation...

out at the cottage and only service is dial up...

decided to bring newer dell 4600 dimension form home to replace compaq deskpro (intell pentium III0...

both computers using windows xp and similarly setup to dial up isp...

compaq modem is able to dial and access internet while the dell does not...

system on dell recognizes modem and diagnostics says it is working properly...

btw, the dell used at home was accessing isp through router...

to further complicate matters, i removed internal modem card from another older computer and installed it, thinking that might work...

at a loss, any help would be appreciated...

When you changed the modem did you change the drivers too? Is the older modem a Winmodem by any chance? If you have the floppy that came with the old modem then install the drivers. If you do not then you need to remove the modem and do a search for the model number listed on it somewhere hopefully and seek out drivers.

I have included a link to Driverguide.com at the bottom. They have thousands of drivers on file. To access their files for download you will need to register, it is (or always was) free. Try a login of drivers and a password of all it may work. They have threatened to change the simplicity for ages and require individual logins.

hi owbist,

bear with me...
but after reading your posting, it is correct to assume windows does not automatically install drivers for either of the modems (original on board and the one installed)...

This is what info was given to me but I could not do it because I do not have that kind of modem. Step 1: Click on the Start menu. Step 2: Click on the Control Panel. Step 3: In your Control Panel, click on the Printers and Other Hardware link. Step 4: Under the Printers and Hardware section, choose Phone and Modem Options. Step 5: Once there, click on the Modems tab. Step 6: Under the Modems tab, if you see "V.92" under your modem name, you can easily set up PC on Hold to be notified of incoming calls. Step 7: While in the Phone and Modems Options box, on the Modems tab, click on Properties. Step 8: In the Properties box, click on the Modem on Hold tab. Step 9: Under the Modem on Hold tab, checkmark the box beside "Enable Modem on Hold to place a checkmark in the box" and then click OK. When you first receive notification of a call, a flashing box will appear at the bottom of your screen. That box will say "BCM V.92." Click on the box to open the BCM V.92 Modem window. Note that you will not see the name or phone number of the person calling. It will only say "Unknown." However, if you have Caller ID, you may be able to see that information. From here, you can choose to Answer the call or Ignore it. By clicking Answer, you will have effectively placed your Internet connection on hold and you will be able to talk on the phone. Once you finish your conversation, simply press Resume to go back to surfing the Web.

As Bob said, a check in never dial a connection, and if you see Earthlink there, remove it. I found Earthlink in the registry 6 months after I used the add/remove to uninstall. The way I found these was with RegSeeker, 'Find in registry' & 'Search for' and typed in Earthlink. or if you wanted, start/run/regedit/edit/find/type>earthlink

bpgreen - I do indeed have an EVDO card. I tried to add a local free ISP via that card and couldn't make it work. So, in the end, you're probably right - work will have to pay for my access while at Mom's house. But I will be doing work email, so we both win - they pay for my internet access to monitor what's happening at work while I'm not at my desk. eeagle - Mom's house isn't as wired as the local Marriott ;) Maybe Mom will like/tolerate Starbucks ;) Thanks everyone! With Win XP, I've always had it reconize modems and if it says the device is working properly should mean the modem is ok.
I'd check that the phone line is pluged into the right jack, sometimes there are two jacks, one called phone and the other line, it will only dial out on the right one, that is if you have two of them on the back of your computer.
Might recheck the access numbers for that area for your ISP.
Also, with IE (Internet Explorer), click Tools/ Internet Options/ Connections Tab/ mine are set to never dial a connection, you could experiment with the other two, also with settings, maybe automatically detect settings.
If it is a driver problem, right click My Computer/ Properties/ Hardware Tab/ Device Manager/ and look a yellow exclamation mark.

As Randy states XP will install the needed drivers, assuming it has the ones needed in it's library. My concern was you comment that you had installed an older modem. If it was too old perhaps XP might not have had the needed driver.

Don't know that much about routers, but:
Did you go to Device Hardware and disable the other hardware (router)you were using for this computer's earlier connection first? When I get a new computer that has the ethernet card I always have to disable it first before my winmodem will connect. WindowsXP always tries to use the ethernet card first. Hope this helps.
