Is there a free/trial dial up ISP to text modems?

As noted on another thread, I'm having problems establishing a stable dial up on a new notebook. Other computers in the same house have no problems, but they run XP, the new guy guns Vista Basic.

I am willing to pay a toll call telephone charge to reach a "test" modem (maybe AOL allows trial membership).

Many moon ago Juno offered free dial up, looks to still do so, 10 hrs per month.

My local library has free www access dial up. Pretty slick extra's through there if you terminal connect & understand a bit of unix.

I have AOL and I am on a 30 day free trial of Peoplepc.
They talked me into giving a credit card number and I thought it wasn't needed according to a notice I saw.
I plan to stay with AOL.

Sorry, I must have had a case of "Old-Timers". I dug through my recycle barrel and found my Sunday ads and could't find the Motorola modem for the price I thought I had seen. I found it once for free after activation but not for $40. Then I found another brand for $40 after activation. My error. Smitty

With Win XP, I've always had it reconize modems and if it says the device is working properly should mean the modem is ok. I'd check that the phone line is pluged into the right jack, sometimes there are two jacks, one called phone and the other line, it will only dial out on the right one, that is if you have two of them on the back of your computer. Might recheck the access numbers for that area for your ISP. Also, with IE (Internet Explorer), click Tools/ Internet Options/ Connections Tab/ mine are set to never dial a connection, you could experiment with the other two, also with settings, maybe automatically detect settings. If it is a driver problem, right click My Computer/ Properties/ Hardware Tab/ Device Manager/ and look a yellow exclamation mark.

agree I would plug all into the router that is much safer anyway since the router will or should have a firewall in it. If it were the ones hooked to the router that had the problem it could be a bad router but if the one you have issues with is not plugged into the router that is what I would try first. One of the first things an ISP tech will tell you is power down your modem and router, disconnect them from all power let set for several minutes then replug and try. Let us know if plugging that one into the router works. You always want to put the router between the pc and the modem to give you the added protection in the router.

I did contact Worldnet, twice, via the "Chat". The first time the agent didn't respond when the going got rough. The second time, I may have phrased my question better, they come back with a "canned" fix, for Error 50, bla,bla.. It didn't work. Remember, after the reload of the modem driver I can make one solid connection per boot, e.g., this time. So I went back to Gateway and after a number of good reading fix ideas, including the BOIS check, Gateway has decided to send me a return for repair. Guess there must be a hardware problem. Now my problem is how do I get all my private stuff off the HDD before shipping. My biggest concern is the Palm Pilot Desktop. I will save the Palm files both on the Palm and on a back up drive, then do a defrag to jumble the "free space", I don't have a wipe/erase tool. I think most of the files I have elsewhere are not so sensitive. In any case I don't like sending my HDD out to be in the hands of others.

If you need a free ISP Netzero Use IE to view page or it doesn't work.
I used Netzero to get my dial-up modem working in Vista, that's another story with a dual boot XP/Vista. Ended up with 2 modems in the same computer, since Vista said my XP modem was in use.
Another free ISP is Juno. Just got a message today from them telling me about the new Vista
ready version.
Both Netzero & Juno have a Connection Wizard for download that I used to pinpoint my connection problems, it gave me a little insight.

So are you impressed with the Vista Connection Wizard? I ran that thing so many times.

Randy, see my post on this forum, also new, "Establish dial up with Vista" it tells some of my story of woes. I don't like Vista yet, it has far too many changes on the interface to "stuff" that is the same function as XP, but not in the same location or of the same name. Make my dislike for MS stronger. I'll try one of the free ISPs to see if the same problem exists there, I bet it does.

I found this in the fine print on A net Zero page (see link below)

* Additional phone and live tech support charges may apply.

I remember I did not go with them for a dial up because they charge by the minute for tech support, and I'd likely be bankrupt if I ever had a bad problem. The charges apply to the High Speed (dial up I think with accelerator) and Platinum accounts. I imagine there would be NO tech support on the Free account.

Thanks, I'm getting ready to engage in a "chat" with Worldnet technical support. I can't expect them to help fix a problem with Acer or Microsoft software, but they may know if there is anything unique/problematic about Acer and/or Vista on the Worldnet dial up. Worldnet also provides telephone support.

I tried to reach Acer today, a toll call no 800 number, as the book said they were available on Saturday until 5 pm, central time, they are not.
