Are there any reliable, cheap, dial-up ISPs?

My sister is extremely frugal. She has AOL on an old PC, but has never been able to use it properly. I'm guessing that's because it's a crappy company. She also has WebTV that she uses for email and the occasional internet visit, but it has mega limitations. Now with the digital switch she's run into problems setting up the WebTV. Regular TV is fine, but she needs some connector to finish the process for the web part.

Anyway, is there a reliable, cheap ... and I do mean cheap ... dial-up internet service provider that I can suggest she try?

Suzie, I've only seen the seed at one place....Wildseed Farms which is down in the Fredericksburg, TX, area. Back when I bought my original seed 5 or 6 years ago, they only had purple and pink, but now they also have a mix which includes purple, pink and white. (The pink ones I have don't reseed as well as the purple ones, and I haven't deliberately planted white, but I get white ones from some of the volunteers that come up from the pink ones every year. I also get some solid pink and some pink and white streaked, striped or mottled ones.) Orginally, when I still lived in Texas in the 1990s, they had a petunia called VIP (for Very Important Petunia) and it grew better and better as the weather got hotter. You did have to cut it back once or twice during the summer or it would get sort of raggedy but it came back into bloom really fast after you cut it back. It spread out about 3 or 4 feet and was wonderful. Then, for a year or two, it seemed to disappear from the stores. Then, just as suddenly, we had 'Laura Bush' petunia which I think either was an improved VIP petunia, a selection from VIP or maybe had VIP as one of its parents. Then we moved here and I couldn't find them here. After several years of searching for them, I found seed at Wildseed Farms, ordered some, planted them, and they've been happily reseeding themselves ever since. The ones I planted last spring (volunteers I dug up from the garden and transplanted into the pots) in large containers (as understory plants under brugmansias and daturas) have been overwintering in the garage. They were in bloom until it snowed and our temperature dropped to 3 degrees. They didn't die, but the cold knocked their blossoms off and the tips of some branches are freeze-damaged though not dead. I need to cut them back and feed them and see if they'll come back into production, but am amazed at how cold-hardy they are and also at how well they flower in the heat. I get a lot of my flowers seeds from them, includng a wildflower blend, Texas Bluebonnets, Alamo Fire (Red) Bluebonnets, the Laura Bush petunias, and various types of zinnias, cosmos and sunflowers. yesican, The "numbers" on your computer are all good, and I assume you're using XP Home for your operating system. The only improvement you may want to consider is upgrading your RAM to 512 Mbytes or even 1 GBbyte. This will not been seen/felt, however, doing email/web browsing. If you're doing hi-tech "gaming" and graphics and/or you keep a lot of process up at the same time, you'll benefit from additional memory. I did not intend to imply that dsl would not increase you data transfer rate with the ISP (AOL or whoever), I said that may not be your total problem. You've got plenty of computer power, so I again suggest you go online and do web browse to anything big, say a news story from the AOL home page, then click on it and bring up your data (dial-up) status and see if data if smoothly flowing. If is is not, then dsl will not be a "total" fix. And too, what is your dial up data speed? The dial-up status will show you that too, it is in the top portion of the display. Looking I see mine is now running at 46.6 Kbps, down from the usual 52.0 Kbps, but I'm on a different phone line than normal. As noted just above, the speed depends a lot on the condition of the phone wire all the way to the central office and the distance, I am about 5 miles form the telephone office and last time I checked they were not providing dsl service to my location. I haven't checked lately and technology keeps improving, but being at or past the maximum distance would put my service at the lower level of the offered service. Speaking of dish/satellite t.v. are your happy with the t.v. service? I'm thinking about dropping my cable t.v. (Patriot Media) because I consider it overpriced. Some have told me satellite t.v. doesn't work in heavy weather: rain for example. What's your experience?

For personal email, I am using an old copy of Netscape ver. 4.7. It's no good for browsing anymore because it does not support newer features and calls in the later versions of Windows, but it works great as an email utility. You can browse the internet with Internet Explorer and bring up Netscape when you need to access email. Both Netscape and IE will run simultaneously without interferring with each other. Just make sure that for the first time Netscape runs and the panel pops up, "do you want to make Netscape your default brouser", you answer, "No". IE will remain the default and Netscape will be secondary. You can start and stop Netscape at any time as needed while IE remains connected on-line. I use IE to log into my ISP's mail server to read and manage my mail on the mail server, but when I want to download emails to my computer, I fire up Netscape to do this. In this way, I can purge my email of spam and any messages that I do not want to keep, then download only the "keepers".

Jann- I am a dial up user, and I have all my updates current. Nothing has affected my connection speed. My connection speed is 46.6 - pretty consistant. I occasionally get a really low connection rate. I disconnect and redial and it will pick up a better rate. If you connection speed is much lower than it has been - it may be a problem with your phone line. Have you installed any new jacks or phones in your house? I have had trouble when the phone company worked on the line that I am on. It wasn't even close to my house. I contacted the actaul service person that worked on it (thank goodness for country living - you know everyone!) and he fixed the issue) I have also noticed many sites that used to load good, are really slow now. The have many more graphics and videos. That just kills my chances of getting on that site. Even eBay is a terrible load anymore. You can call the phone company and have them do a "line test" to start with and see if there is any issue there.

Services have agreed to a strategic merger. That's all i know about it. That was a while ago as far as i can tell.

Direct withdrawal from checking! No bill in mail. They also provide Hi-Speed in more incorporated areas. Has she tried through her TV carrier? They sometimes have bundle packages! Great for consolidating bills!!!

My local library used to offer free dial up,, maybe still do. It was limited to 1hour sessions as they had a limited number of modems. But you could dial up as much as you like and seldom were all the access modems in use at the same time.

IF your sister is proficient enough with her computer (and has her own anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. so that she doesn't need to use those of an ISP), she could try a DUN connection service like VTISP (4.95/mo.). Based in VT (obviously) I have used it here in Pa. and was very pleased with it (until I decided to 'go cable'). I still have it on my grandfather's computer. Few disconnects and generally connects at 50 kps or higher -- as high as 54.6 !! :-O

This service doesn't provide phone support (and I've never needed it in the 5+ years I had it !), but the VTISP homepage mentions their other 'sister' service which does at least provides phone support for those who feel they might need it.

Before I switched to broadband, I used poetworld for quite a number of years. I recommended this ISP to a friend who still uses them.

When my friend got a new computer two years ago and had trouble connecting online with his broker, the poetworld tech people actually talked with the broker tech people to try to solve the problem. At the time, my friend was succesfully online with other sites, so the problem was not with the ISP but poetworld, nevertheless, stepped in to help him.

There is no contract to sign. Use them on a month-to-month basis. They have many "local" numbers so you don't incur long distance charges. When I switched to broadband and discontinued their service they were extremely gracious and thanked me for my business.

Other than having been a very satisfied past customer, I have no connection to them.

(And no, you do not have to be a poet.)

I used juno for several years with a break in between. Nothing to complain about, no being knocked off, it was slow because it was dial up. The last time I had it the price was $9.99 a month and it was charged to my credit card.

Check here to see about an access number. If she can use the service you can poke around on Aristotle's site for costs and restrictions. I correspond with a user who would rather fight than switch.
