Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop. Right click the Hijackthis Icon and Run as Adminstrator if you use Vista or Windows 7
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

You should be able to disable all of those annoying, unnecessary things. There are several options:

1. Call HP Tech Support and have them walk you through the disabling.
2. Uninstall the printer software, and then reinstall, being even more selective this time about what you choose to have installed.
3. Download a free program from Malwarebytes called StartUpLite: it may allow you to selectively turn off the various HP processes. If you disable one that interferes with the printing, you can just re-enable it. Alternatively, you can do this by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run; then type in msconfig and click OK; click on the Startup tab, disable the unnecessary HP processes, and click Apply; then reboot your computer. Again, if you disable any HP processes that are critical, you can go back in and re-enable them. Leave other startup items alone unless you know what they are.

Users have been using msconfig to control start ups for so long it's become common practice. It should be avoided. I use to use it and would advise the user to use it as well. A lot of web sites also say to use it.

The System Configuration utility helps you find problems with your Windows configuration. It does not manage the programs that run when Windows starts.

Many people frequently use MSconfig as a long term solution to control startup processes and services. You will also see many websites condoning use of MSconfig and teaching you how to use it for controlling startups. This is a very bad idea for many reasons.

1.MSconfig was designed to be used only as a temporary debugging/troubleshooting tool. It was not meant to be used for long term solutions.

2.MSconfig does not show all startups anyway.

3.If you uninstall programs while they are being disabled with MSconfig, they will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to properly get everything removed. MSconfig will leave orphan entries if/when installed software is uninstalled while under the control of MSconfig . When/if MSconfig is turned back to normal startup, it will give errors on boot due to those orphan entries.

4.MSconfig and Services:
If you uninstall programs while you have some of the programs services being controlled with MSconfig, the programs will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to get everything properly removed. When you uncheck a service in msconfig, you completely disable it. If you uncheck the wrong one, you may not be able to restart your computer. It is safer to control services by using Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services (this runs services.msc).

5.You can lock malware items into your registry that you may not see anymore until some point in time where you switch back to Normal Startup mode and now you can cause total reinfection of your PC with the malware. You need to remove the malware not mask it.

I agree that going to services.msc is a more powerful approach, but it also requires the user to have a much higher level of knowledge about what those services are and what it means to choose among the Startup option settings. Yes, you can can mess up your computer by disabling the wrong things via msconfig...but I've never had a problem in 20+ years. It wasn't a general discourse on using msconfig; it was specifically aimed at this narrow issue, and that's why I said to only disable HP entries. And I also suggested StartUpLite as a simpler approach.

I'm not disputing your points of view; just saying that some approaches work better for some people and some for others...

Thanks. I did look in Services but again they are listed as HP...with a bunch of letter/numbers. Nothing you could distinguish. Took me a while to get the wireless going and I don't want to cut that off. Maybe calling HP would be the best route although I haven't had good luck with them in the past.

Installing the software, there were 10 entries and I unchecked all but 3. I wonder if the other crap installed anyway.

I like to keep my computers clean and lean. I do not allow junk to start up or run - if I can carefully figure out what they are. I've messed up before and am much more careful. I've messed up with misconfig and try to only use Services but sometimes certain things continue to start up even when disabled in Services such as various components of ITunes. I found I can't stop Bojour Services by disabling it in Services so I shut it off in msconfig. I do not want that running unless I want to use it.

From Add/Remove Programs, you will find several things probably. You never need the Customer Participation Program (who wants HP peeking over your shoulder all the time?) and can safely uninstall Updates and any kind of supply monitor...you'll still get a message when a cartridge is empty (this is where the shopping stuff comes in). If I'm not mistaken, once you uninstall all of that bloatware you'll be a lot happier with it. It really has nothing to do with what you spent, all HP printers come with tons of unneeded software.

I have had very good luck with the HP chat which you can find by looking up your model on the HP site and choosing the chat link there.
