Why Do I Need Messenger?

Everytime I turn on this machine I get the pop up sign in for Messenger. Then it shows that "Joe Blow" is on line in messenger. I try to open the message,but nothing happens. I don't need this messenger for receiving e-mail & would like to get rid of it, if possible. I don't want Hot Mail either. Is there a website that explains the pros & cons of Messenger? I'm hooked up to MSN.

If you don't use it, get rid of it. You can 1) go to control panel/remove programs, and remove the entire program, or you can open the program, go to the menu, find Preferences, click on, and find the box checked for Enable to start at login, and uncheck it. One program that is handy is Startup Cop, In this little program, it will show you all the programs you have installed on your computer that are set to start at login. You can go through them all, on one page, and disable all the programs that you don't want on startup.

Why? Because.

Annoying isn't it? Can you get rid of it with IE7? I haven't been able to. I can no longer disable the background process without MSCONFIG...then I get alarms going off. I can turn it off but not deactivate it.

I grow mine in pots as a temporary means until I am both satisfied with where I want them to live in the garden and also the soil where they will be planted is decent enough to not stall any progress they might be making. It sort of gives me a flexible buffer so I donÃ¢ÂÂt feel pressured or rushed to get them in the ground. I also pot them up to allow me the opportunity to Ã¢ÂÂbabyÃ¢ÂÂ them, if need be. There is a down side to that though. Sometimes I fuss too much and I know if I just left them alone they would be fine. But, I am still so new to hostas that I feel like I would be a bad parent, throwing them straight out into the wild unknown that I call my front yard. I want to tame the jungle before I let the kids out to play. That sounds corny, but you get the point. :p I think the biggest perk though is when they are in pots I can take the whole plant and plunk it in the garden where I think I might like to place it permanently. Once I have a plant anchored I will then plan around it, and slowly the garden grows. I have tried to sit down and map out an entire bed, but I always end up more frustrated than satisfied. I need to SEE them and the other plants around it to know if itÃ¢ÂÂs a good fit. Plus, I can leave them in the spot in the garden while still in the pot to test out sunlight and wind. Thank you. What I didn't mention was that when we walked into the shelter we said we were interested in seeing Jesse (the shelter had named him). They gave us the oddest look and said "are you sure you mean Jesse?" We said yep. I didn't walk back but DH did. He said Jesse was terrified and hiding behind the igloo dog house that was in the pen with him. His tail was tucked and he was growling. The shelter sat on a very busy country highway and with the combination of the barking dogs and the trucks, it was really noisy. Dh didn't like the way the worker was approaching the dog, thought she was actually scaring him more, so he took the glove from her and asked her if she had any treats to offer. She actually left him there in the pen with the dog. After she left DH just grabbed him and brought him out. Once we got a leash on him we walked him out to a quieter place and sat with him. He would barely lift his belly off the ground when he walked, everything startled him, but he let me rub and pet him everywhere. Even down between his toes. I knew he would be okay once away from there and NO WAY was DH going to be able to put him back in that cage and walk away. We took him home and bathed, him and loved on him and by bed time that night he was a completely different dog. He still jumped at everything, he obviously had not been socialized at all and he had spent months at that shelter. It's been five years and he is an amazing dog. He is so sensitive to our emotions. Sometimes I swear he knows what I'm thinking. LOVE HIM!! All of our pets have been rescues. We had our beloved Abby put down a couple years ago and she had been a special needs rescue also, but Jesse really feels like a save to me. Maybe Reggie brought us to him. Who knows. Sorry this got so long. I just love sharing this story.

SEER ratings are tossed around a lot without any real explanation. The difference between 14 SEER and 16 SEER when only comparing the difference between single speed systems the difference is maybe $10 to $20 a month on your light bill. Depending on size of the equipment, the size of that equipment and the set point in which you choose to run it at and your utility rate. Cheaper operation cost for the 16 SEER, higher operation cost for the 14 SEER. The noticeable difference IMHO is when you go to a 2 Speed 16 SEER or higher system and then go with a full communicating system. The advantages you get is more in the realm of better comfort as well as efficiency, but at this point it's more about comfort advantages. Location: If you aren't in a humid climate, the 16 SEER 2 speed comfort advantages are mostly wasted. Devil in the details: If you don't go with a communicating system but go with a 2 speed unit, the legacy stats that control 2 speed systems isn't quite as good as the communicating stat that was designed for said equipment. Differences among manufacturer's: You may have to go higher than 16 SEER to buy a communicating system with some brands. Optionally they also make 5 speed algorithmic, based units. These are communicating as well and in some cases legacy 2 stage thermostats can be paired with them - obviously the communicating stat would be better. But given the additional speeds I think it would be less noticeable than a 2 speed system. The other advantage in multiple speeds is less noise in lower speeds and in 'some' cases better warranty coverage up to and including 'replacement coverage' for a certain amount of time as well as 'conditions' that warrant it. For the reasons above it is my opinion that single speed SEER units above 14 are not worth the money. Spend a little more and get a better system or spend less and settle for the 14 SEER system. I say go for it. There are a lot of nay sayers out there but if you do some research about "owner builders" you will find many people do this all the time with great success. You will have headaches, you will have stress, but its a trade off. There are plenty of good reliable subs out there that are willing to do the work. You will just need to research them. Best thing to do is have a written contract for the work. Will GC's get better pricing. Sure. Then they mark it up and you end up paying more than you may have paid yourself. I did a full gut remodel a couple years ago and found a great set of people I will continue to work with. Are they the cheapest? Probably not (plumber is for sure) but I felt the prices were reasonable and I got good work out of them. Go by word of mouth. Get on Nextdoor (the app) and ask your neighbors for recommendations on contractors. If you have time to do research and understand the basics, you can do a lot. If I can rewire my house by learning off youtube and pass a city inspection, anyone can.

MSN Messenger you can uninstall from control panel/add remove programs.

Windows Messenger you can disable or basicly uninstall it by unchecking it in control panel / add remove programs / add remove windows components.

I don't have that. I don't have add/remove windows components ...is it because I use a notebook and have shared components? I have show Windows updates checked, and I have lots and lots of updates, but I don't have Windows Components...or do I search for them?

It might show up in a different area, perhaps under a menu item if you dont have Classic View enabled.

You should be able to open Explore and right click on C drive and do properties .. and windows cleanup and then click the button for windows components too .. scroll to the bottom of that list for Windows Messenger and remove the check in that box. And windows will clean up... removing that version of messenger along with the other stuff.

Perhaps you simply need to be logged in as an administrator account ?

I tried the Control Panel and removed it...then all hell broke loose. I wound up having to completely re-installing MSN. When I un-installed Messenger it affected my whole internet connection and I haven't been able to get online since I posted this thread. I tried to restore the pc to an earlier date and no matter what date I used it came up with message that "this machine can't be restored". The Registry Mechanic kept popping up everytime I turned the pc on to scan it and "fix" it. But MSN kept telling me that there was a problem, a long problem. So in the end I removed Registry Mech., ran Norton deep scans and finally removed MSN and started over again. Finally got back on line, amen! I'm sure if I were more literate in operating this machine I wouldn't get into so much trouble and there are probably easier ways to fix them. Hopefully, it's fixed now and yes Messenger shows up, but I'll learn to live with it and get on with the computer experience! Thanks to all of you who have tried to help me, I really appreciate it! Calpat: My experience has been terrible when I tried to remove Messenger in the past. With all the alarms that went off you would think I was stealing gold from Fort Knox not getting rid of an intrusive program that I didn't want.

I have had great success with End It All to turn off unwanted running background processes while I play games...well Morrowind, a game. After IE7, about all it turned off was the Toshiba pinger. All the processes are now "protected". The security alert background processes. Everything is running now. Its such a pain. I used to be able to "end process" for messenger and a lot of Window stuff...no more. I uninstalled "End it All" because it no longer ended or "killed" anything but the pinger. I think I'm going to have the same problem as you. I don't think you made a mistake. That might be what happens now. I'm scared of it.

I tried to remove a fax background process,a long time ago, through MSCONFIG and my computer sounded like a fire drill at an elementary school.

mikie ... I'm going to try to look into this anyway. I just hate having to carry messenger because I don't use it, and I won't use it. I don't think it can be removed anymore than I can "end process" for it during a game session like I used to. But you know that I am usually wrong...so I will give a look see...

I have windows messenger unchecked and its not running. I do run msn messenger and use it for hotmail access everyday and some instant messaging too. Works well for some to just leave messages sitting on my desktop while I sleep. Kinda like a free phone too sometimes. Occasionally somebody runs a webcam, while wearing headphones listening to music and forget its on... people look like bobble head toys, bouncing to music. Handy little thing here. It remembers everybodys email addresses for me anyhow.

Oops there it goes,,,popped a note, just got an email, from my sister. I hate her emails, word processor with oddball fonts... looks like hell read in text only, probably has background paper and colored fonts too, but I cant see that stuff. If only she knew what it looked like and how hard some of it is to read ;)

I just renamed my messenger folder from "C:\Program Files\Messenger" to "C:\Program Files\Messengerdisabled"... Did the trick and didn't caused any problems....
