My old computer

The thing, Sony VAIO, Windows ME, has not been connected for several months. Today I provided space for it and hooked it up as it has some functions that I need that are available offline. Booted up fine, apparently. But it does not respond to the mouse- and I tried two of them, one of them tested on my other computer. The mouse is plugged into the correct place. The center of the screen (desktop) has the arrow to the left and the hourglass to the right, hugging each other. Neither one will move.

Look at the device manager, it should show a yellow (I believe, I've never operated ME) exclamation mark by the mouse. Click on it and look for properties, you may need to load a driver. Others may have better ideas, but that's where I'd start trouble shooting.

Sounds like the whole screen is frozen, at least that's what happened to me tonight. I just rebooted.
You may want to start up in safe-mode by tapping the F8 key and select "Last known good configuration that worked"

since you have already done what you decided to do I would most definitely set her up as Administrator on the pc and set up a user name and hard password for the pc so that anyone there can not access it they would have to know her name and password to enter the pc. Other wise they can just sit at her pc and do anything and that leads to infections and she does not need that. Be sure you load some of the good free antivirus programs on it like AVAST which does work on 98 and malwarebytes free, make sure she knows how to update and run scans. I would also put spywareblaster free on there and show her how to hit the update button once a week on it and then hit the enable all protection no scans to run it just runs in the back ground. I would also install firefox on it and have her use that instead of IE.

Is it listed in programs in control panel? What OS is this computer using? Maybe Picture It 7.0 is not compatible with the OS? Need some more information here to determine just what your problem is.

Transfer of old computer contents to new

Oh yeah vista is almost as outdated as xp. You can still find a lot of new ones with windows 7 but the newest will have windows 8 on them. As to transfer of files I too would not let BB touch my computers. It is not difficult to transfer files, pictures, etc. You can plug in a thumb flash drive into the old pc select the files or folders you want to copy to the new one then drag to the flash drive icon or right click on the selected files and select the flash drive to copy to. Windows 7 has a built in feature for doing this easily, you will need to install it to the xp machine but it is pretty easy. As WinME didnt come with all drivers like WinXP, is it possible, that the drivers for the mouse(s) that you are using are not on that ME machine. Also, make sure the mouse is plugged in before booting up the computer

Since the cursor will not move on the screen, getting to the device manager is impossible. Using the same mouse as previously.

Hum, takes some trial and error for me, but you can maneuver with tab to get around the desktop... then too if you have a self "booting" driver CD RoM that might work. You may want to also try coming up in the safe mode, think that would be F8 during boot, to see if that gets you any control.

How many times have you rebooted since discovering the problem. Sometimes a reboot doesnt go well and you have to shutdown and do it again
