My old computer

The thing, Sony VAIO, Windows ME, has not been connected for several months. Today I provided space for it and hooked it up as it has some functions that I need that are available offline. Booted up fine, apparently. But it does not respond to the mouse- and I tried two of them, one of them tested on my other computer. The mouse is plugged into the correct place. The center of the screen (desktop) has the arrow to the left and the hourglass to the right, hugging each other. Neither one will move.

Look at the device manager, it should show a yellow (I believe, I've never operated ME) exclamation mark by the mouse. Click on it and look for properties, you may need to load a driver. Others may have better ideas, but that's where I'd start trouble shooting.

Sounds like the whole screen is frozen, at least that's what happened to me tonight. I just rebooted.
You may want to start up in safe-mode by tapping the F8 key and select "Last known good configuration that worked"

You will probably want to uninstall the trial version that came with your new computer and install the 2003 version. However, unless I'm wrong the 2003 version could only be installed on one computer and when it's time to validate it you will have to contact Microsoft and explain the situation and hope they allow you to validate it on your new computer.

stargazer if you click on blackvipers site on the version of Windows you have it takes you to the page for that list of services, then there it list all services you might find on a pc, he then gives a list of if it can be set to manual, auto, disabled etc, this is doing it through services rather than msconfig which is a better way to do it and that way sets it for all users. all versions of XP x86 (32-bit) running Service Pack 3 that would be the link for anyone running xp service pack3 Configuration Information he explains the various options on settings, and also explains how to find the services area to do the changes. Service Configurations under that heading you will see the full list of services you might find listed on your pc, to the right of each service name you look for your particular version of XP, Home, Pro which will be most people, then see what he suggest under that heading for each service if he says manual set it to manual if it says disable that means it can be set to disable, if he says auto it should be set to auto. Old computer died -now have to use Windows 8

Last night I discovered that I cannot play DVDs with the home edition of Windows 8 - at least not without third party software. I installed VLC, and it will play the DVDs, but without sound. I never learned how to use Windows Media Center, and so I have always used other media players, but they will not work as well with 8. I installed Media Player Classic (my favorite from before), but it will not play DVDs, and it will now only play a few of the FLV files that I have. The ones that will not play on MPC will play on WinAmp, but I would prefer to have one player that would do everything. I guess I'll have to go back to watching DVDs on the TV with a DVD or BluRay player. Or I will try to find an inexpensive way to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. I wish I had been given that option from the beginning. The reason that a DVD player is not included with Windows 8 is that MS expects DVDs to become obsolete in the near future, but Kevin and I both do not believe that to be the case. Kevin should know since he is in DVD sales at Sony, and while sales have already peaked, they are still steady and are a huge business. People still have vinyl records, and so I think DVDs should be expected to be around for a while. Apple removed the DVD drive from their notebooks long ago, and that is another reason I won't buy their products. I'll give you another update when I get this problem resolved. Lars

Have you tried the Brother website to see if there are any software patches to make PE Design run with XP? You may have to contact Brother for help. I've heard lots of things don't work right with XP. Donna

As WinME didnt come with all drivers like WinXP, is it possible, that the drivers for the mouse(s) that you are using are not on that ME machine. Also, make sure the mouse is plugged in before booting up the computer

Since the cursor will not move on the screen, getting to the device manager is impossible. Using the same mouse as previously.

Hum, takes some trial and error for me, but you can maneuver with tab to get around the desktop... then too if you have a self "booting" driver CD RoM that might work. You may want to also try coming up in the safe mode, think that would be F8 during boot, to see if that gets you any control.

How many times have you rebooted since discovering the problem. Sometimes a reboot doesnt go well and you have to shutdown and do it again
