Hard Drive usage

My daughter has an 80 gb HD and Usage shows as 58 gb.

There are no pics or tunes on the computer.

She has cleaned everything...temp files/cookies/history etc.

She has cleaned Standard Free Space and defraged.(although 16 gb won't defrag)

Her Utilities and a couple of programmes account for less than 100 mb.

Does this seem a bit high to anyone else? Any suggestions?

If she doesn't have much on her computer in the way of large programs, something is weird here. How long have you had this computer and what is it used for? There is a cheap ($8) utility, called DiskPie Pro that will help you figure out, manage, and cleanup whatever is on the disk that may not be necessary. It's probably just an accumulation of innocent things and programs, but there is also a chance that her computer has been compromised by hackers who are using her computer to store their stuff. It might sound far-fetched, but it's increasingly common, especially if you don't have an effective firewall in place. These things are sometimes called "botnets" and it's estimated that about 5 million computers have been infected. I'll add a second post below with a link to a story on this.

Here's the news story I mentioned. Nobody knows for sure how many computers are compromised. Symantec claims about 5 million, this story mentions 13 million...

I have three external drives constructed by using hard drives pulled from computers that were headed to the recycle center. I purchased hard drive enclosures from eBay and added the drives. The installation was very easy. The drives are recognised very quickly and data transfer is fast enough with USB 2.0. They act very much like a flash drive and no driver is required unless you have Windows 98 or older. I paid less then $20 for the enclosures and got the drives for free. All of my enclosures have on/off switches and LEDs indicating power and usage. One uses a notebook drive and it can fit in my shirt pocket very nicely.I would recommend converting an extra drive if you have one. External drives are great for additional storage. They are also excellent for sharing and transporting files between several computers.

I reformatted the My Book - which went smoothly. The copied a short video. Again - worked well. Now I'm copying a whole bunch of videos - and it's taking time. I'm copying about 10-15 hours of standard definition tv shows. So far, it's been over an hour. I have no idea how long it will take via USB2 connection. The 30 minute video took less than 5 minutes. I have follow-up questions. I wonder what the best way is to back up these files. I just opened up My Documents and right-clicked one at a time - then chose the option to "send to" and selected drive e: my book. I'm sure there's a better way to do this, but I don't know what it is. I tried to highlight more than one file at a time (using the shift key) - but it didn't seem to want to let me highlight more than one at a time. I also wonder if I send a file to MY Book - does that mean it's moved to My Book and the original isn't on my PC - or is it copied there? Raven - I know I should know this by now, but I don't. How do I find my firefox profiles and bookmarks files so I can copy them to the external drive? Lastly, is there a way to copy files to the external drive in such a way that I can get prompted if the file already exists? so I don't make a copy and have 2 copies in there? with many files (like pictures), I may get a prompt that says the file already exists - should I overwrite it or skip. Is there anything like that when copying files to the external drive? At some point, should I bite the bullet and buy a software program to do this. Western Digital tries to give trial periods for the following software : Memeo Autobackup, Memeo Autosync. Any reason to get these? Or any other software? Also, when I reformatted the drive, it wiped the drive clean. Is there anything (drivers, software?) I would need to download from Western Digital (to replace anything I might have erased). I know that the proprietary software that's sometimes loaded with these things (like cameras, printers) may not be necessary at all. Thanks. Lynn.

Thanks everyone. Lots of useful methods. Mikie - it's good to know about moving entire folders (I don't have my video's in folders - yet - but am just discovering how useful that would be for shows I've recorded for a few seasons - having them altogether). I'd like to double check and ask what "a cmd window" is - and how I'd get there. Again - I have Windows XP (SP3). Sorry to say, Mikie, but I also need more explanation for what "make a shortcut to the destination , within the folder the files are in... then select a bunch of what I want to move, cut&paste onto the shortcut" means. I know someday I'll understand all of this, but I don't know how to make a shortcut to the destination. And once I cut and paste onto the shortcut, what do I do with it? Absolutely there are some big files - so I'm glad to told me to break it up into smaller chunks. I have so far. Thank you. Lynn.

"STPP will cause the fats in soap-style detergents to separate and float to the top." HHhmmmmm...are there really laundry products that are mostly pure soap? Wouldn't the synthetic detergents and solubilizers ('hydrotropes') prevent that from happening? I wonder if you need the stoichiometric quantity of STPP to complex ALL of the hardness ions (Ca++ and Mg++, mostly) or if a lower amount almost serves in some almost sorta...catalytic role of improving detergent efficiency without full complexation? Sorry to be the Debbie Downer but I think people should remember - they (phosphates) can have negative environment effects and we should be mindful of that. Waste plant effluent is monitored for phosphate levels. If it keeps creeping up because of widespread use of 'aftermarket' STPP, well...legislatures gotta legislate! To wit: I hardly drink much alcohol but do peruse liquor stores once in a while...I have bought GEM clear to make botanical extractions from the garden...and I do occasionally enjoy the odd rarefied aperitif like Zirbenz...distilled from the finest swiss pine nuts! Anyhow, it cracked me up that after the ever-helpful Maryland state legislature passed a boneheaded ban on 190 proof alcohol, after some rich kid died from drinking, I dunno, punch he well-knew was spiked while at a frat party or something equally banal...distillers responded by creating Maryland-only 187 proof versions of GEM clear/Everclear/etc! It's the work of a moment to convert back to 190 proof OR HIGHER if you know what you are doing LOL. So, so, silly. I have always added a bit of ammonia water to my laundry as a booster, and will now be adding some sodium borate as well. Have TSPP in the house but have only used it for laundry that is in desperate need of it, like the time I accidentally got used Kubota hydraulic fluid all over a pair of jeans. (it got it out) Granted I don't have hard water...for those that do, I can appreciate there are probably advantages to using it in every load.

The actual disk space of an 80 GB hard drive is around 74.5 GB of space, roughly 7% less than what they advertise.
Still 58 GB of Used space is an enormous amount, not sure what she's looking at to get this info.
For a start, I would check the volume for errors.
Right click drive C:/ properties/ tools tab/ error checking - check now, put a check in both boxes and start.

I got fed up trying to figure it out so I ran the Recovery disk and she's now down to 2.59 GB of usage.
I'll keep an eye on it to see if it creeps up again.

If this grows by any significant amount (and I mean even less than a GB in the next week or two), without anything new being installed, you've got something going on there that needs attention. Good luck.

If nothing is being misinterpreted, there is a problem.
With an 80 gig hard drive the computer probably has Win XP operating system. Which is quite large itself. I don't understand exactly where she got her numbers:

I quickly looked at my hard drive free space by clicking on My Computer and then right click C:
