a couple of shower curtain rod questions--need answers asap!

Any standard mounting height(s) for the rod? We purchased the curved Crescent Rod for both baths--ready to install one of them. The shower curtain is standard length (72"). What's a good height at which to mount the rod, or, roughly how high should the curtain hem be from the floor? There's no soffit over the tub (8 ft ceiling), and the "extra" open space over the tub might throw off the perspective, so I thought I'd try to get a consensus here and in home dec, rather than rely on eyeballing it alone. I'd prefer not to have a lot of the tub showing below the curtain if possible, but don't want the top of the curtain/rod to look too low, given the lack of a soffit.

Also, how far inside the tub walls should these curved rods be mounted. Haven't opened the packaging yet--are there instructions or suggestions for spacing/location of the rod, inside the pkg?

Yes, there are instructions inside the Crescent Rod packaging.

Since people's tastes are somewhat different about the aesthetics of the issues you're asking about, I'd suggest you put your shower curtain on the rod, have one person hold it up from inside the tub, and make your own judgments about height and depth. I know we didn't follow the Crescent Rod directions exactly, because we thought it looked better a little father out (I think it was out!) than they instructed.

Yeah, we knoe everyone has opinions re: that (and everything else--my mother's up visiting and keeps asking why I plan to put this here or that there!). Still would like to get some guidelines if possible. Thanks re: info about the Crescent Rod instructions!

I prefer a shower curtain on a bath tub for the same reasons mentioned. I like to be able to pull it all the way back and have the space feel open while I soak. I also imagine if you're helping a child bathe in a tub, a shower curtain would be easier to handle. That said, if you have children/teens showering in the tub, I suspect a glass door would be more likely to keep water from getting all over the floor. In a shower only, I prefer a glass door. I absolutely hate it when shower curtains billow into the shower and stick to me while I'm trying to shave my legs. It's one of my biggest bathroom pet peeves. There are certainly some nice shower curtains out there. I remodelled my main/guest bathroom and swapped the standard tub for a deep soaker tub (with shower). I picked the Restoration Hardware Italian Stitched Hotel Shower Curtain. Now I see it's offered in extra long! Maybe I'll have to order a new one. We rarely shower in there, so I tie it back with a coordinating ribbon and I think it looks really nice.

I am in Sweden dealing with an old tension rod that only pulls apart. It won't shorten. Thanks to these posts I pulled everything apart and sent the rod with the spring down the tube and it worked. The curtains are up in the kitchen now! Thank you everyone!

This is the 2nd time we've been there - last month we used a $25 coupon, but we found this place has $25 entrees. Since it was DH's bday, this time we bought $50 coupon, I ordered a romaine salad (came grilled - yuck!), he ordered calamari appetizer, we figured we'd share. Well, his $11 appetizer turned out to be one 4" squid, 1 clam, and 2 baby octopi so he ate it all himself. He ordered a $24 entree (risotto with sausage and brussel sprouts - sounded good except for the brussel sprouts), I ordered a special lobster tail in kind of a tomato-based (turned out to be almost Fra Diavlo!) chowder that ended up being $29. Add a couple of glasses of wine, coffee, 1 dessert sampler and we had no trouble going over the $100 before tip. On the bright side, we got to open the envelope they gave us in December - DH was hoping for the $500 gift certificate or even a free meal (would be around $100), but it ended up being a cooking class for 4 people. Date TBD. I don't know if this will be a private class or if we're going to be with other winners, since they gave away 12 of these. I'm sure they won't have 48 people at a time in the kitchen LOL but maybe 12? I was thinking of asking my cousin K and her sister - will have to see if K is up to it. Dh suggested my mom but no way would she be interested in Italian (esp. fancy-pants Italian) cooking class. We did see on Restaurant.com that they've added more family-style places in our area (incl. my parents' favorite Italian place) so we're going to have to buy some certificates for those while they're half off (and with a $10 free certificate to restaurant of your choice with every order, the coupon we used Sat night ended up being free so we still had a nice meal for $88 after tip). DH wanted more kid-friendly places, DS is no problem but DD is so picky and antsy, I told him "Friendly's (local ice cream parlor chain, burgers, hot dogs and such) doesn't participate, sorry!" But a nearby pizza place (not our favorite but OK) does, we'll have to see if it's good for dine-in only or takeout OK. Hey, I came back to show you this CL ad (went a little farther from home, Fairfield Cty where the formerly rich Wall st types live). Do you think this "china table" might work for b/t my windows, to put DVD player on, if dimensions are right? I removed the sliding glass doors from our walk-in shower. There was a thread describing how, but I can't find it. As I recall, I took one door out by lifting and bringing it forward at the bottom. the other door wouldn't come out, so I worked around it. I think the top frame came off first, then the side , then bottom. Don't remember how I kept that one door from flopping out ;-( Unscrewed the side frames and had to nudge the frames out with a flat head screwdriver as they were siliconed in. Finally got the bottom out, with the door. Cleanup was remarkably easy. I used a paint scraper (razor blade type) to get the silicone off, and worked on the bottom crud a little each day. One day it was gone. Poof. I bought a heavy duty shower curtain at WM and have fabric over it. Love it - hated the doors. BTW - to clean plastic shower curtains is easy in a top-loading washing machine: Put shower curtain and 2 large bathtowels in the machine with 1/2 cup each of detergent and baking soda. Run through entire wash cycle. Add a cup of vinegar to the rinse water. Don't spin or wash vinegar out. Hang immediately. Wrinkles will disappear after the curtain has thoroughly dried. This won't work with a front loader...sorry.

Just discovered that we'll have to mount ours further in than suggested in the instructions (they rec 3" in from typical straight bar mounting; ours will be 4 1/2-5" in) because our bathroom isn't very deep, and the toilet is close to the tub (at or just a hair closer than NKBA guidelines).

We can't have the bar sticking out too far since I'd prefer to use the toilet without a shower curtain draped over my lap! LOL

I recommend the install of fixed hardware and rods and not ones that pressure fit. I have found that Marine hardware stores sell great Stainless steel hardware and lengths of stainless steel rod that makes for a rock solid install.

To add more strength to this design we add in a second smaller solid wood dowel or straight pipe tapped with electrical tape to make a pressure fit inside.

These curtain rods supports are strong enough to be used as chin up bars if blocking and proper framing was done during framing stages.

I had our old curtain rod come down on my littlest a few years back and we switched to this install from that day forward...

It's up! DH showered in there last night ("his" bathroom is still down to the studs and beams!)--said it was much roomier inside, even with the further in placement of the bar. That's good since we really couldn't place the bar any further out with the spacing of the tub and toilet.

We were trying to cover as much of the bottom edge tub with the curtain as possible, while trying to avoid having the bar look too low in relation to the ceiling. We moved the tension rod up and down a bit in order to determine bar height. I think I'd have preferred the curtain to come down a little lower at the bottom, but compromised, in order to keep the rod itself at a visually appealing or proportionate height.

It's all about trade-offs and compromises with this stuff as we have found time and time again. As it is, I think the rod height and the height of the curtain hem off the floor (on ours) are pretty much where one of the how-to sites recommended, so there you go!
