I thought I had my waterproofing plan, but...
Comments (4)Here I am, fighting the tryptophan! Except for a few areas of the Deep South and southwestern deserts, basement insulation is recommended across the continental US. Source: U.S. Department of Energy--Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy But say you don't care, whatever the reason. Then, unless you are in the far, far North, poly on a basement wall--top to bottom--is an invitation for moisture problems. Your basement feels dry now because the uncovered walls are permitting drying both to the exterior and interior, depending on the season. Once you apply poly to the wall, you are inhibiting the outward drive--warm to cold during the heating season. But in the summer, the drive to the interior is trapping moisture behind the poly and while some of it may condense and run to the floor, much will not and will feed mould growth on the wood and masonry walls. Note too that this simplified view ignores the fact that: 1) the poly will not be a perfect vapour barrier; and 2) other mechanisms of vapour transport--groundwater leakage and capillary wicking-- will short-circuit the tightest poly barrier. Comments (15)Brosamj: I have ordered the GE Cafe' DF range for our beach place; it's scheduled for delivery on October 1. I have not gotten to see this range in person and am banking on the fact that it's based on the GE Profile range which gets good reviews. I chose the DF over gas because, like you said, there is very little price difference and this will give me the self-cleaning oven. I have a Wolf AG at home because the DF was $2K more but I miss the self-clean. My appliance repairman likes the GE cooking products from a performance/reliability standpoint. I will post a review once our range is up and running and I get a chance to cook on it. I have the GE Monogram Advantium 120 and really like it for all of its different capabilities/functions. The Kenmore Elite dw's get very good reviews on Consumer Reports. I believe that yours is either a rebadged Bosch or Kitchenaid - the Sears salesman should be able to tell you which. I have a Kitchenaid "S" series which has been wonderful; many love their Bosch's as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either and I wouldn't hesitate to buy the rebadged Kenmore. It seems to me that you've made excellent choices for your budget....See MoreI would love your thoughts on my tile plan
Comments (10)I like the idea of painting ceiling same as walls. Hosenemesis, there would be less strips than you described. BUT, I agree that with white tile, than color, than white ceiling, it might be stripy. That has been my thought too. I tried white trim and color walls as a sample in my kitchen remodel last year and it looked like a circus tent! My rooms are small and one can never get far enough away or between the door frames to have a nice ratio of trim vs wall color. I solved the problem in the kitchen by painting the trim as the walls and I love it. Prairiegirlz5, you illustrate a very glamourous bath! Sounds lovely. This bath will have a bit of glam but overall it has to function as a frequently used toilet for my farmer husband and others that may be working or visiting. I do want it to look sort of like the early 20th century and similar to my kitchen as it is just off from the kitchen. Now, I think I may have to alter the color plan. I yanked a bit of my remnent soapstone out of the shed to take a look and " :O these colors aren't going to work!" Tile pattern will stay the basic pattern but the listello may be tiny running bond so I can get a good matched white and stay in budget. I could go with a Ming green listello but I don't want a strip of color. The slate floor will stay, as will the soapstone. But what color do I paint the walls? Did someone above say light green? I may have to go that direction because the veining in the soapstone is green! I was thinking that there was more white veining. It pays to keep your materials close at hand throughout the process, not hidden away and counting on memory. The paint that I used in my kitchen was BM Titanium and it looks fabulous with another soapstone I have there. I just wanted a more ocean-y feel to the colors in the BR. Any thoughts are welcome....See MoreOK-I'm back with a revised plan--your thoughts?
Comments (17)Hi holligator-don't apologize-I'm posting so I get this from all angles... The thing that I do like about bmorepanic and lyfia's plans is that they open up that door again to the living room to direct traffic there. But bmorepanic's plan just initially seemed very broken up to me. I think the other thing working on me mentally is--now that we've kept the kitchen in place rather than moved it, I'm finding myself less apt to change the things I actually LIKE about my current kitchen--and there are indeed a lot of things I like.So that may be a mental block for me. One of our other things is, we're re-using our 10 year old cherry cabinets. We picked them out, still love them and they are still available--so we're just using what we can of those and filling in with more. My priorities for the remodel as a whole are: -Master bed and bath -A more open kitchen/dining footprint that allows guest to hangout while I cook without being in my way, and has room to seat 8-10 diners on a fairly regular basis. (we're only a family of four but host Sunday dinners weekly) It has been hard not to be distracted by other issues in achieving these two primary goals--I think there are several perfect solutions here, we just can't afford them. We are in a stage of the design where a detailed itemization of costs will be provided soon--and that's where we can really get into what is and isn't possible on this more detailed level. We're dealing in such big squishy numbers right now... In a sense I do agree with you about the step backward--hubby and I had a few go-rounds regarding switching over to this sort of layout--but it's tradeoffs...and we think this might be the way to go---but everything is still on the table. The two triangles (top right corner) and one other that has moved around the plan quite a bit---are two built-ins that I'm somewhat irrationally committed to saving and using. Anyhow, still playing with all this-- Right now trying to weigh the benefits of opening that wall to the living room back up as opposed to the benefit of more cabinets/counters in that space--and where does MW go? :) We're not big MW cookers but use it enough for reheating... Your continued comments appreciated..... B...See Morem5askqu5
