Help me redecorate The Forgotten Room (aka my family rec room!)
Comments (17)The natural jute or seagrass rugs will not look as good on carpet and may permanently discolor the carpet. Plus, it is just another edge for kids to trip on, so I personally would not layer flooring in that room just for looks. Reluctantly agree with above poster who speculated that bar table, while cute, would end up as a horizontal surface only (read: repository for anything you need to put down) and not as an eating area. I would maybe get a bigger ottoman than the chair (if you replace the chaise) would need, and get a nice big melamine tray with sides and a handle for the top for their food. (If you decide you want to try a table I wouldn't try a round one if it is going up against a wall for obvious space considerations, and I would get a regular height one, not the pub height...... think kids horsing around and falling off those high stools, their center of gravity is pretty high.) I bought a bolt of green and white mattress ticking fabric online years ago and had slipcovers made for two sofas. The slips outlasted the sofas! The navy and white (more in real life like navy and off white) is very durable if the fabric is cotton twill and woven, not simply printed on the surface. If you google signal flag pillows (images) you'll see an embarrassment of riches. If you go the signal pillow route you can always just do solid color pennants on the rafters. There are etsy shops that will make them to order in the colors you desire or you might find them already made. I have to say though that I really like the flags on rafters picture posted above!...See MoreHelp! Crown molding vs. Window casings
Comments (6)I can't find the exact picture I am looking for. I don't care for the idea of not using crown on that wall. It will looked unfinished IMO. I would trim those two windows in a flat stock like the attached photo in a bungalow/craftsman style and make the top flat pediment large enough to go up high enough that the crown will run around it. So the two are incorporated together. This is the type casing I am referring to. Just can't find one that goes to the ceiling. https://www.houzz.com/photos/lincoln-road-farmhouse-kitchen-boston-phvw-vp~5759870...See MoreHelp! Need help arranging furniture in this family room
Comments (7)I'm not clear on why you don't like this placement? To me, this looks ideal - kids zone at the end of the room with shelving and baskets for storage, TV on wall by windows with couch facing it. You have a nice set up for ease of conversation and looks warm and inviting....See MoreCased opening width -Family room to eating area
Comments (15)I would consider: Switching the Kitchen and Eating Area Eliminating the 9' doorway altogether Increasing the doorway that's currently to the left of the ovens to 6' or more...now that it's the Eating Area doorway, sound/clutter from the Kitchen shouldn't be an issue Moving the door to the Screened Porch closer to the Safe Room door You still may not be able to fit everything b/c of some of the same limitations (e.g., the length b/w the Mudroom wall and the window wall on the opposite end of the space). I'd have to work with it to see if you could not get what you want. However, I have to ask...if your table is so close, do you really need seating at the peninsula? Maybe just have one or two seats instead of whole line with diner-style seating (where diners are sitting like ducks in a row so they don't have to look at the strangers sitting next to them.) I don't suppose there's another Dining Room elsewhere that we cannot see b/c the layout isn't the whole floor? Could you find another plan that might be easier to modify to fit your wants?...See Moreathensmomof3
