I understand what people are saying about not putting all furniture against the walls. But try telling my husband that. He thinks moving it away from the wall is wasting space and wonders you do with the space behind the sofas! I have the same hesitations myself. We actually have a beautiful cherry writing desk that we could us in the space of the entertainment center. My husband thought we would move it to the basement room. but honestly if we do that I dont know where all the toys are going to go! Plus I think it would be nice to leave it upstairs and have it in the family room instead. I also really like the idea of putting the LCD TV on the 1/2 wall and building some storage there. Does anyone have any pictures I can look at for ideas? My husband likes to do woodworking so I am envisioning some nice maple or cherry shelving and having the TV sitting on top or mounted over it. The room is 11'8" wide from the wall with the windows to the stairs dropping down into the room. I'm not quite sure that is wide enough to position 2 couches facing each other with the fireplace on one end and future TV on the other. I NEED more than 1 couch. As it is now 3 of us pile on it and the loveseat NEVER gets used. I think loveseats are a bit pointless. Usually only 1 person sits on it at a time. Also, I dont know about having to turn my head to look at the TV. Seems like it would get uncomfortable. Now I am thinking what may be feasible is to get the sectional, but pull the short side out from the 1/2 wall. Then I could potentially put our writing desk there (if we pull out the couch enough). Put the TV in the corner like we originally planned, and then have room for a chair and maybe automan to the right of the TV. Thanks everyone for all of the feedback (keep it coming). Its really making me look at things a bit differently. IF I went ahead with a sectional but pulled it out from the wall, what do you do with the space behind the couches? It seems like a waste.

How about moving the couch over to the wall on the right looking at the photo, then move your table and chairs to go in the opposite direction meaning turn them so the length is opposite what it is now. Place the table from the right wall in front of the window. At least it would give you a view of the fireplace. If you could post a photo from inside the living room looking out of the room it would give a better sense of how the room looks.

i would not place over the fireplace, that is too high. you can put on an arm on the left side of the book case where the slot is for a smaller one or leave on the wall it is on, then i would give it a larger console. i think i would continue to have the sofa face the fireplace then have two swivels on the right side of the couch so they can turn to the fireplace, the tv, or the couch. i would not even ask about shelves i would quickly have them filled. if that step down gives a problem i think the least expensive solution is a slanted piece of wood shoved against it. well and glued down. if you ever want a little more color or zip, let me know can give you at the least some cool pillowsl. let me know.

Nice large window and hardwood floors! Here's a few things to think about: 1 Turn the rug so the long side is facing the sofas. Then bring the sofas in closer off the walls and have the front leg sit on the rug. 2 A coffee table 3. Bring the two teal chairs closer to the sofas to create a conversation area and not block the lovely fireplace. 4. Remove the mirrors (They are hung too high) and get one large piece of art 5. Try longer curtains that just touch the floor, maybe in teal . Two panels per side. 6 Does the chair that is suspended from the ceiling have to stay?
