Need good PC laptop that uses XP

My husband is looking for a good PC laptop that uses XP.

Screen size 13-15" would be fine.

Quality, capacity and customer support are are important to him.

I hope someone here can offer suggestions, since my computer savvy, such as it is, is limited to Macs.

many companies still sell xp laptops, here is a search at tigerdirect for laptops with xp

buy.com also has quite a few.
just search for new laptops with windows xp and you will find them. Some that come up will be the new small netbooks so if you do not want those you will just have to wade through them to get the full size laptops.
be cautious because some places do sell refurbished models but they are always labeled as such.

another option is to go to a company like cyberpowerpc and configure your own pc and have them build it for you with exactly what you want on it, they do offer xp.

Okay. You guys are great. Clearly the collective wisdom is not to throw money at the problem - but figure the problem out. Owbist - in my thread on not connecting my husband's vista laptop to our network, I tried quietly, methodically to troubleshoot the issues - to no avail. I found lots of similar frustrations on google - but no solutions that worked - and I think I tried them all - at least to the best of my ability. thanks for those great, easy-to-follow instructions to transfer to an external hard drive. He'll want to do that anyway - even if he keeps this computer. This computer guy is pricey - but where I am in DC they seem to fall in the $125-140/hour range - and they can usually fix a problem. Others that charge $40-75 - that the uninformed think are good - but their know-how is less than what I find here. I tried a few of those locally recommended guys - and they accomplished the simple tasks but also made mistakes I had to hire the more expensive guy to fix. My main complaint with him is that he's wedded to his biases - he hates Vista - so his recommendation is usually to avoid or ditch it. Our struggles with Vista seem to often be how often we're blocked from things or performing simple tasks have all sort of obstacles - for "safety's" sake. Thanks to everyone for pointing out that Windows 7 is just a revamped Vista. I got my first issue of Smart Computing and they were tauting it and described some features I thought I'd love. DA - if W8 is in process, is there any indication of what it will be like? Probably worth waiting for - or at least waiting to hear more about how Windows 7 is panning out. So I'll keep plugging away on my other thread to get him connected. If I don't succeed by Tuesday, the computer guy will come and fix it. I guess we'll stop there. Thanks. Lynn.

I just went thru this exact (almost) procedure, getting my new Vista desktop to network with our Win xp computer with printer. Not so easy, but here are the instructions which work: 1. To set up the house network, on the Vista computer: Start-Control Panel-System and Maintaint.- system-computer name,domain,workgroup settings area on the screen, hit the "change settings" button, then system properties-computer name tab-change computer name/domain changes-in Workgroup type your home network's name-OK. Then to set up the printer, a huge pain, but doable: On the Vista computer: Start-Control Panel-add printer-add Local Printer (I know it's on a network, but this is the way to do it)-create a new port-default is "local port",leave it-next you have to enter a port name, this is the tricky part, you have to type in the path to the printer manually, the path should look like: \\your exact host computer name\your exact printer's sharing name. That's it. To check for the exact host computer name, go to the host computer, my computer, and a screen will come up with it's official name, use it, case sensitive. For printer name, go to host computer, printers area thru the control panel, rt. click the printer and properties. A sharing tab will show, click it, the exact name for the shared printer will show, again use it case sensitive. The above took me all day when I got my new Vista, hope it helps.

Thanks! Still love working w Vista. Re watching TV at work, I work from home evenings and weekends - on other projects unrelated to my corporate exec day job. So the Vista machine is what I chose to keep from co-mingling my personal projects from actual work product. With the hours I spend away from the office (in spite of a 4-hour commute in total each day) I want to know of all the features available w Vista, including the TV/DVR one--have not had time to learn that one yet. jerry- One of the biggest problems I see is people who are continually looking for the best software -- free and paid --that will clean/tweak/fix their computers. Why is this a problem? Because when you fix things that aren't broken, you sometimes make things worse. That's not to say that there aren't some good pieces of freeware out there to deal with specific problems, and I, myself, use free anti-virus and anti-malware. But in 25 years of using and working on computers, I have learned the hard way that doing basic, occasional maintenance using standard tools, like the defrag utility already on your computer, emptying the recycle bin, setting my browser to clear cookies and history each time I shut it down, running regular scans, etc., is typically is enough to keep my computers working just fine. I have worked on the machines of quite a few friends who have overused certain programs and caused problems where none needed to exist. I agree with everyone above who questions the paid-for software one sees on tv, which has messed up many computers. The best investment you can make is to learn and utilize the utilities you already have on your computer, and to use free, reliable, online tools from Microsoft. Microsoft Fix It Solution Center

I thought I might mention on cyberpowerpc site they say vista on the info but on any of their systems you simply click the customize button to change anything you want on each one and in on the software and services tab you have the option of your Operating system both xp home and xp pro are available and you want to go through the customize and make sure anything that is listed as FREE is selected, you want all the freebies.

Before purchasing from Tiger Direct, I'd visit www.resellerratings.com or my3cents.com. If looking for a used laptop, I'd check out used-pc's.com. Some have an operating system, others don't. I recommend buying your own operating system as this is better than relying on a restore cd. DIrectdeals.com still sells all versions of XP
