Help... Laptop changed Mobile PC display?

The display became very small on my Toshiba C655. When I tried to adjust it. The display was set on Mobile PC Resolution and there were no other options to change to. I am sure that I used to have options there. How can I fix it to where I can get the display back to normal? Thanks in advance!

Restart it maybe if you haven't ... then think about using a restore point.

Thanks, Mikie! I have restarted it, but no change. I have tried the last 3 restore points, but it goes thru the restore and then says it was not completely successful. Still on PC Mobile with no options. I tried changing it as soon as the resolution changed so I know the restore points should fix it but I can get them to complete. I did find instructions on how to delete the Mobile PC from the registry to fix the problem, but I couldn't find it to delete it. Any input on how to solve this problem will be appreciated.

Okay. You guys are great. Clearly the collective wisdom is not to throw money at the problem - but figure the problem out. Owbist - in my thread on not connecting my husband's vista laptop to our network, I tried quietly, methodically to troubleshoot the issues - to no avail. I found lots of similar frustrations on google - but no solutions that worked - and I think I tried them all - at least to the best of my ability. thanks for those great, easy-to-follow instructions to transfer to an external hard drive. He'll want to do that anyway - even if he keeps this computer. This computer guy is pricey - but where I am in DC they seem to fall in the $125-140/hour range - and they can usually fix a problem. Others that charge $40-75 - that the uninformed think are good - but their know-how is less than what I find here. I tried a few of those locally recommended guys - and they accomplished the simple tasks but also made mistakes I had to hire the more expensive guy to fix. My main complaint with him is that he's wedded to his biases - he hates Vista - so his recommendation is usually to avoid or ditch it. Our struggles with Vista seem to often be how often we're blocked from things or performing simple tasks have all sort of obstacles - for "safety's" sake. Thanks to everyone for pointing out that Windows 7 is just a revamped Vista. I got my first issue of Smart Computing and they were tauting it and described some features I thought I'd love. DA - if W8 is in process, is there any indication of what it will be like? Probably worth waiting for - or at least waiting to hear more about how Windows 7 is panning out. So I'll keep plugging away on my other thread to get him connected. If I don't succeed by Tuesday, the computer guy will come and fix it. I guess we'll stop there. Thanks. Lynn.

Thanks for all the input. I did try hooking a monitor to the laptop to eliminate the possibility that it was just the screen or the cable that connects--it showed nothing. I agree that the repair may not be cost effective--but wanted to try everything I could before purchasing another PC. Also just tried Zep16's advise to keep hitting the F8 key, but just as he suspected--the menu never appeared. Although laptops are difficult to troubleshoot because replacement parts aren't readily available. We do have 2 of these laptops exactly alike and I wondered if it would be advisable to switch out the hard drives, etc... to see if I could pin point the problem. Since my knowledge is limited, I wasn't sure if taking the hard drive from the working machine was a good idea. Thanks again--All input appreciated.

From what you've described, my reactions are: The program you're using (Secunia) is unnecessary. I wouldn't spend another second using it or opening it. Programs update themselves. Driver Restorer sounds like a come on, I'd delete it and pay no further attention to it. If a driver needs updating, the periodic update sessions from MS will handle it. If your PC is working adequately with its hardware, the topic of drivers can be ignored. Java has nothing to do with the display's general performance. Maybe some part of the screen or what controls it is failing? Is your PC going into some kind of a sleep cycle, does the screen brighten if you touch a key? Maybe you should take the PC to a repair shop or replace it if it's old?

Heather, here's some more things about the software you might find helpful. Save different groups of AVs, such as a wish list, list of AVs you own, list of AVs you sell or gift. Print out these groups in different formats for different uses. Here's some examples: Printout of paper or sheet of labels with pics: Printout of paper or sheet of labels without pics: Printout of plain list, for a notebook or your word processor: Contents of text file, with data separated by tabs. You can easily pull this file into your spreadsheet software: That's it for starters. Using the Search feature is very easy, too. I just got done creating all the above lists of some named violets in about 10 minutes. There's nothing very involved in learning the database, you just need a general knowledge in using computer software. The downside of it all is that the cost is a little steep if you are not an AVSA member.

I don't have a win7 here to look at. Maybe somebody else can chime in...

Have you run from command prompt (admin)

SFC /ScanNow

ChkDsk /F

Can you find maybe in your control panel an icon for Tablet and disable tablet mode... or possibly in 'programs and features' Turn Windows features on/off.

I might download my graphics driver and keep it handy and then go to Device Manager and uninstall my Display Adapter followed by a restart which should discover its missing and automatically re-install it a few moments after login.

I know one of the windows updates last week made people's font on vista very tiny. There were several complaints on the craft forum I visit and it was a know issue with a specific update we found out. Didn't take note of the update since I am on 7 and had no trouble with it. Mary

Your Laptop should show up as a Mobile PC Display!

Does your picture fill out the whole 15.6" Display area?

Is it just that all the Icons, Windows, Print, etc... that are very small now?

If so, you just need to adjust your Resolution. I have mine set at 1366x 768 which is the smallest things can go on this monitor. You can make everything look larger on the display by adjusting the Resolution tone of these settings (smaller numbers make everything look larger on the screen): 1360x768, 1280x768, 1280x720, 1280x600, 1024x768 or 800x600, at least these are my settings.

You get here by going to: Start> Control Panel> Display> (in the left Column) Change Display Settings> Resolution (Use the Drop Down Arrow to pick desired resolution)

Hopefully this will work, if not I'll see what else I can figure out for you!
