remodeling an existing 72' double sink vanity

I have a 72" inch double sink vanity that is about 30 years old. There are two great Kohler ceramic sinks (the originals and still in great shape) and fairly new faucets that we installed a few years ago. The problem is that we think this unit was custom-made. It looks like it's made from some laminate material and is a one piece unit. We have heard that the way to go now is to piece together separate units (i.e. two 36" units and lay a one-piece countertop). Is this true?-- Do we have any other options? I have priced single 72" units online and it's at least $1500 and up. My kids have moved out of the house (and this was "their" bathroom). We don't use it much but want to update the look. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!
