Electrolux range hood -was this a mistake?

Just purchased appliances for our new kitchen on Sunday. We went with the Electrolux gas 30" range, Electrolux dishwasher, and a Samsung french door refrigerator. We are absolutely thrilled with all 3 of those choices and do not have even a hint of buyer's remorse. However, we also decided to add in an Electrolux range hood (chimney style, 30") which was $855. We were planning to spend $500 on a range hood at IKEA, but at the last minute decided to get the Electrolux one.

We're wondering if the hood was a wise purchase? We've never had anything more than the hanging microwave/vent combo over the stove, and I know how useless those are!

I definitely wanted to get a better venting system but I'm just wondering if I spent too much on the Electrolux one?

If anyone has any experience with the Electrolux hoods, I'd love to hear them. And I'd also love to know what a reasonable price is for a 30" chimney-style vent hood so that I can decide if I over-paid for mine!

I don't know anything about the specific hoods that you mention but many of us spent over $1K for 30" range hoods so $855 is not at all out of line. How do the CFMs of the 2 hoods compare, for example? If you're happy with the choice, don't second guess yourself.

i agree. if you've never had anything more than a micro-hood, you're' likely to be thrilled with the new unit. and the price, as weissman said, isn't at all out of line with what 30" chimney-type units run.

Jaty, our range is installed and it looks lovely. Here's the feedback: * The Pacific Sales installation guys were nice but they weren't equipped with the right tools (a very thin wrench) to properly extend the legs to level the unit. I subsequently called Electrolux who sent servicemen to do it for me. Meanwhile I had borrowed a thin wrench from a friend which these guys used to level it. * The unit must be hardwired so be prepared to do some electrical work if you're replacing a more conventional unit. * We are extremely happy with smooth glide racks, the look of the unit, and its cleanability. * The convection bake settings are not working correctly (rear element doesn't heat up). Electrolux promptly sent out very courteous servicemen but their first two attempts have not been successful. They're coming out again. I'll keep this board updated. (The regular bake setting works so we're not yet hampered.) * The burners are wonderful. No complaints here. They are, however, spaced far apart, so conventional griddles barely fit and are not uniformly warm. There is some dead space in the middle of the griddle. This is true even of the griddle they give for free with the unit. On full blast the flames can peek out from under the griddle towards you, so watch out. * You can get infinite control of the simmer setting by turning the knob between off and ignite. Very useful. * The grates are very heavy. By design, it seems that the inner tine is angled just slightly greater than the outer one, so pots rock ever so slightly. It's really not an annoyance but I don't know if it's a defect or not. * The lack of a temperature gauge takes getting used to. The oven beeps twice once preheat has been achieved, so if you've left the kitchen and missed it, you'll never get positive confirmation. This is probably true of other pro-style ranges too. For the price we paid we think it's a great bargain and we would do it again.

tsur - I think you'd better check you dictionary on the meaning of prosthelytizing . I don't see Dacor's site trying to convert anyone. Their religious leaning section is buried deep in the site in the co. background section. The section is simply a statement about their philosophy, it's not as if their salespeople tote around a bible and ask dealers to come to church with them. Nor are their owner's manuals or sales literature riddled with these messages. Their propaganda section about being "green" is far larger. They were one of the first co.'s with a Star K certified oven, what should we make of that? Maybe muslims should stay clear of this brand too? How about the hindis? Look folks - all they are trying to do is give the public a glimpse about the company from the human perspective. They are not in the commodity appliance business. Don't read too much into that section of the website. The new CEO is an outsider and total quant jock. Also seems he is focused on the bottom line as he's gotten rid of most of experienced people who helped build that co, pretty much just showed them the door. Doesn't seem very "christian" to me, but more cold hard business. So, I don't thnk anyone has to worry about the zealots, if a Dacor appliance fits your needs and pocketbook - you should buy one without fear of being asked to join the congregation.

Additional info from Icon Microwave installation guide: ÂCan only be installed over ranges or cooktops with 33" maximum width. It does not specify "professional" vs. "consumer" but the salesman said that because it is a professional range you cannot install the microwave over.

So maybe the smoke alarm triggered something wonderful in your children - they associated it with a great dinner! lol I trigger the panel when I'm showing it to someone who hasn't seen anything like it and once in a while inadvertantly. Occasionally it says hello to me when I'm using the range, but it's kind of amusing to me actually, and very brief. It was a bit of leap of faith for me to commit to buying it because, like you said, there was not a lot of feedback on it. I compared appliances for months and I'd go back and forth between the Electrolux and other ranges and just could not shake the feeling that this range was beautiful, ergonomic and the others did not live up to the smooth and solid "feel" it has. Of course that has nothing whatsoever to do with the function of a range, more form - but unfortunately they don't let you bake a pie in the showroom to test drive them. ;-) (The gasket was one thing I wondered about, but so far (and I have been using it for only a few months) it's not a problem and seems not to be an issue as far as cleaning up.)

We have an Electrolux hood, undercabinet and 48", so not the style you'll have, but also much more money. It's not the quietest we ever had, but I think that's partly the installation, and the fact that it moves about 3 times the CFMs of anything we've had before. I'm VERY happy with its performance. I bet you'll also like the lighting it provides over your stove.

Great, thanks for your responses so far! I feel better already. I'm very excited to have anything other than the microhood!
I just assumed that the Electrolux hood would be quite a bit more than it was, so when I saw the $850 price tag I was actually pleasantly surprised, so we just went ahead with it.
We got our Samsung refrigerator from the "scratch & dent" aisle (we looked at this refrigerator 2 days in a row, from top to bottom, and couldn't find a single scratch or dent on it). It was marked down to $1300 (originally around $2500) and the guy gave it to us for $1000. I say all that just to say that I think we're wondering if it was stupid to spend about as much on a range hood as we did on our refrigerator, but I think we just got an absolute steal on the refrigerator.
Anyway, glad to hear that I didn't terribly overpsend and I'm definitely looking forward to using the new range & hood! It will get a lot of use in my kitchen.
Oh to answer your question, here are some specs on the fan:
4 speeds, 600 cfm, 9 sones, 2 halogen lights, and an auto-start heat sensor.
