Audio Device Connection

I have no sound on my computer,the speakers are definitely ok.When I go to the control panel and check the set up it says no audio device connected.I am baffled. Iggie

First try a simple reboot if you have not, then you may want to Google XP sound trouble shooter.

Or

Did the sound work yesterday? If so do a System Restore.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools in system tools choose System restore to a time when things were working.

The first place users should check is the on-board Help file doing a search using the keywords "troubleshoot sound" (sans quotes).

Vista has had an issue with high definition audio devices from the beginning and would generate that error No audio output device is installed. There was a windows update that was supposed to address the issue. Make sure you are running Service pack 2 on vista. That's all I could suggest for now. Your description sounds like the audio service isn't always starting that's a guess. There's a few users that have gone around in circles with that error. If you Google No audio output device is installed Vista you will see some of the complaints posted on other forums.

Starting with the simple things. You didn't mention a reboot or a system restore. What did you recently do out of the ordinary, if anything? Any updates or upgrades? Software removal or additions? Windows Updates? Software reconfigurations? Full system scan with your AV and malware detection software(s) of choice? Thunderstorms or power surges? ----------------- -------Rebooted,System restore, nothing new, automatic updates and driver downloads, full system scan and malware (which said some files could not be scanned), thunderstorms after loss of sound.

Ok, all, this is what I have. When I did the restore I was running IE 8, but had IE 7 when it restored back to Wed. So I assume I am now in 7. My tool bar seems to be Google, I don't think I have the IE tool bar which seems to be my problem. When I had it normally two days ago I had both. I had the IE bar (status, with tools, favs, etc), and also the Google bar. Now I only have the Google although it's restored back to Weds. Boy is that confusing enough??? BTW Mikie, I have hit the ALT and all I get is a dissappearing "circle".

Hi iggie, I have this problem with my Vista laptop. I hope this will help. Go to Device Manager and see if Audio is listed. If it is not, this is what I have found works. Do a memory test (recovery memory test). Control Panel/Administration Tools/Memory Diagnostic Tool (check your computer for memory problems). Choose: Restart now and check for Problems. (recommended) Leave your computer alone until it shuts down. When you restart, your audio should be back.

This also works for HP Quick Touck OnScreen Display Stops Working (Problem Event: APP crash)

This is a recurring problem with many computers so you may have to do this again.....and again. Good luck, maggie
