First, a warning -- I have never lived in a house that needed make-up air. Not even close. Double-pane glass makes little sense for us since all the heat goes around the sashes in our Victorian. My experience with MUA is related to commercial systems. What follows is an opinion about the kinds of things that would make me consider MUA. Unless you have a Code requirement for make-up air, you have a fireplace you use when cooking (I seem to remember that you are South Bay?), have a "naturally" vented gas appliance in "connected space" (no always-closed doors between the hood and the appliance), or have a "tight" house (recent, energy-efficient construction, most likely), I would skip MUA. Even if you do need MUA, the difference in the maximum hood flow probably wouldn't significantly influence the the cost of the MUA system, which I would think was primarily labor driven. If not significantly more expensive, and you can run at least an 8" duct (preferably a 10"), I'd go with 900 CFM for two reasons: * You have it when you need it -- guests over, and the kitchen fills with smoke... * A 900 CFM blower at 600 CFM may be noticeably quieter than a 600 CFM blower at 600 CFM The 24" will serve you well. I got a private label re-branded Zephyr Typhoon from Signature Hardware on clearance for $350 in black. I know it is the exact same as the typhoon because the interior schematic maps are identical. Their website has it spec'd as 600 cfm but I do not believe this; I believe this is the full blown 850 cfm typhoon. I love this hood and it was a great price, see how strong it is, that is a full size corningware french white quiche pan it is holding up (basically like a pyrex pie pan - and note that in this picture the second fan is wide open during this)!! But do beware this hood is a BEAR to install due to finicky mounting hole locations, and you would need at least two adults if you do it yourself and don't want to be frustrated. Also, on the "slanted" underside: this is engineered into the hood so the draft is more efficient at pulling the fumes/steam/heat that you want up into the fan. If the surface were only straight down, then some of the fumes/steam/heat would escape up the front surface outside the hood. That angle provides a small CROSS angle current so it is sucking up from directly below and also a small proportion from frontward, so more is captured. A hood is first a functional piece of equipment and secondarily a cosmetic consideration! Hi, I painted my under cabinet vent hood. Looks great. Get the grease off. Remove it, take it outside, clean it with a strong grease solvent.(Do it safely, of course.) Paint does not stick to grease obviously. Search for cleaning instruction on the internet. Use a spray primer and be prepared to sand with a very fine sandpaper if your primer is rough. I like B-i-n primer because it dries extremely flat. Lay the fixture flat when you spray so that it does not run (drip). In other words spray, let dry, turn on side, spray and let dry, etc. Or use light coats and spray over and over until you get the coat you desire. (you should do that anyway..multi, light coats) Read the "dry time between coats instructions". I like Krylon better than Rustoleum. I think the Krylon primer is great (but needs sanding for a very smooth finish) and I think the paint is the best spray can paint. I tested quiet a few.IMHO

What size and type of range will you have? We had the Whirlwind in our last house. It was very quiet and had a very low profile, which was great for having storage above it. It was also easy to clean. We had a ceramic top electric range and didn't do much broiling or stir fry then. That wouldn't be a model that would keep up with us now. Before I decided to have a 48" gas rangetop, and thought we'd have 36" induction and would do stir-frying, I was planning to get the Typhoon that offered better lighting and more CFMs for no more noise. With the gas rangetop, I was leaning toward the Tempest II. I ended up with a comparable Electrolux hood instead, but believe the Zephyr would've been a good choice, too.
