Q for people who were GC and no 3rd party financing

How did you document the cost of your house (i.e., the cost basis for tax purposes)? We were GC for our house and didn't have a lender, which means that all we have to document the cost of our house is a box of receipts, many of which are fading because they are printed on heat sensitive paper. I did start to put the expenses on a spread sheet, but our computer crashed and all the data was lost so I need to start over again. Looking back, we should have established a separate checking account and paid everything from it, but we didn't. What did you do? And if you use a spreadsheet, do you think it is necessary to photocopy fading receipts too to back up the spreadsheet?
