Build Up or Down?

We have narrowed our design down to 2 plans that we really like. They are similar in that the master & main living areas are all on the first floor and that the other bedrooms and a 'rec room' or 'bonus room' is in a basement or upstairs. We have looked at the pros and cons and just would like some feedback from others to get their opinions.

Our property is a sloped view lot so we are most likely looking at a deep crawlspace or somewhat of a partial basement even if we build up. I have heard contradicting information on basements. Some say they are expensive because of the costs of concrete walls, others say that basements offer the least expensive finished square footage in the home. If a basement is the less expensive way to go then that would definately impact our decision.

The plans we are considering are the Dogwood Ridge by Don Gardner and the Covington by Alan Mascord. We would have to modify each plan to fit our needs but they are very close to what we are looking for.

Here are the links if anyone is interested in comparing.

We know we will have to make this choice ourselves, but this forum has been so great I just wanted to ask you all. So many times someone will offer a perspective that we had not considered. Thanks in advance for your input.
