My Internet Explorer Keeps Closing on Me

What would cause my browser to close/crash when I try to open a thread, lets say on the cooking forum. There are a couple of threads it happens with. Always the same ones.

Do you know if these threads are picture or graphic intensive?

Do you have an older system or a system that is straining its resources?

A combination of these two elements could cause a BSOD (blue screen of death) or a system lockup.

Would think its the java or activeX on the page for or from advertisers. So that would point at making sure you're up to date with Java and ActiveX.
Next thoughts would be add on popup or ad filtering like the google/aol/yahoo etc toolbars might be the cause when they see those advertisements.

well those toolbars come with many many programs if you do not read carefully when doing installs or updates including java, flash, and IE, many of them, in fact there is a hall of shame at COU forum listing all of the programs that now include pre selected toolbars in their install, it has nothing to do with the browser you use to do the download or install it has to do with watching what is pre checked when doing your updates or program installs and un checking any for things like toolbars. I have had to clean tons of toolbars off of peoples computers too who had never heard of firefox, only had IE. I tell people to add a second browser because it is a very good idea to always have at least 2 on the pc because as we all know IE can and does fail then leaving them no way to access the internet. Whether they select firefox, chrome or opera, it does not matter but firefox is the best known so when asking for help they will find more people that are familiar with it. All browsers have their pluses and minuses none are perfect and I have never seen anyone here say any one browser is perfect. the point to make to people who have loaded up their pc with toolbars, why this is happening to them, is to watch what they are doing! Pay attention to every single line when doing any type of install. And do not let it add unwanted items, if they are not told how it happened it will happen again. I assume you have tried this:- Click Start click All Programs look for and click Internet Explorer. (near the top of the list) If there you can also right click on it and click Pin to Taskbar in the pop up menu If it is not there click the folder on your bottom task bar near the Start button to bring up Windows Explorer click the plus sign beside the C: drive on the left side in the menu dropped down below click the plus sign beside Program Files click on Internet Explorer to highlight it now look on the right side and right click on iexplore and in the pop up menu click to pin to Taskbar. Done.

When installing Norton as a Comcast customer, the download is from Norton. I was a Norton Customer before becoming a Comcast customer and other than a bit of brand signage, the Norton Suite doesn't appear to have different versions. There's no need for any third party uninstaller program - if you look on your program menu under Norton Security Suite, one of the choices is Norton Uninstall. I can tell you from my own experience that that utility works very comprehensively. I once had a corrupted file that required an uninstall - reinstall that wasn't working for me, and Norton Tech Support used that tool on a remote connection. OP, I'm glad everything is working for you again.

I'm not sure if there are graphics/pictures involved in the threads. We have a pop-up blocker. I never see any pop-up ads. We also have this problem with the Tiger Woods 2007 game. It locks or we get the BSOD. I called EA sports and they told me to try to update a more current graphic driver. The web site showed that we already have the most recent driver.

I guess I need to see if we have the current updates for the ActiveX and Java.

This is a Dell that we bought from a friend.

Post the blue screen error the error it self will help isolate the problem..

It never says anything about an error. No message to help me. It acts like I just exited IE. Nothing else.

I wonder if I should download Firefox or something to see if it happens there.

Absolutely try another browser this will confirm a browser problem or point to something else if firefox fails.

Thank you everyone for helping me out! I just downloaded Firefox and was able to open the threads on the cooking forum without the browser shutting down. I guess it was IE that was giving me the problems.
