If you are using XP you should install a different firewall. The XP firewall only works uni-directional. Though I persnally don't use either, the free versions of Zone Alarm and Comondo firewalls are regularly recommended here, and they are bi-directional.

Cricket you need to remove AdAwareSE because Lavasoft is no longer supporting it effective from the end of December. They have replaced this with AdAware2007 but for many this has proven to be a resource hog compared to the old SE version. You might consider trying the new SUPERAntispware program, also free and with some good reports behind it. Another alternative would be AVG Anti malware, also free.

Owbist -- I removed AdWareSE Lavasoft as per your instructions but, ... where do I find either Super Antiispware program or AVG Anti malware....free??

Also, where would I go for a Firewall if I can't use XP Firewall? I have Home Edition Windows XP....dammcoy mentioned uni-directional and bi-directional. What does this mean???? Any information for me would be helpful. Thank you so very much. Cricket/Marie

It means, that it only stops items from coming in not going out. Often times, malware slips through a firewall, and calls home. XP firewall will not stop these. Zone Alarm which is free will. Just do a google search for Free Zone alarm and free super Antispyware.

I'm just lurking on this thread, but I wanted to ask you about the above. I have Ad-Aware Pro on one computer, and the regular edition on another. Neither is the 2007 version. I have updated BOTH of them several times already this month. When is this cessation of support supposed to begin ?

You can get a free firewall at the link below. Look on the left hand side and choose Firewall Free. Just follow the instructions to activate.

For firewalls, here are 2 choices besides Daylillie's Ashampoo if you wish

Zonealarm Pay attention on this one as they seem to try to muddle you into clicking the Pro version.

Comodo I used comodo for a while but found it got a little annoying with it's pop ups looking for you to approve or deny access so I went back to Zonealarm which I have used on and off for years.

not2bright I would suggest you are safe enough. Lavasoft would have warned you about an update to the paid service if there were major changes. I assume with the paid version you are getting automatic updates? Either way just keep your eye on the window when the program starts to verify the changes in date as updates are downloaded to your program.

Just found this post I have Ad-AwareSE will try the AVG spy program, I have the AVG Anti Virus program.

Owbist.....et al....Thank you so very much for all your help. I now have AVG 7.5.516,AVG Spyware 7.5.1.4.3 and Spybot - Search & Destroy on my computer.

My computer is running like a charm. I haven't downloaded Zonealarm yet.... because I want to make sure I am downloading the free version....I still have Windows Firewall on. I will do that soon. I was so busy today doing these transfers with my computer and my husband's. We completely got rid of CA Internet Security and Norton Internet Security.

A dumb question, no doubt, but what is anti-malware? I have removed AdAwareSE, and installed SuperAntispyware. I do have Spybot and Norton Internet Security. What do I need now? What about Zonealarm? Thanks in advance.

No one answered not2bright's question...I, too, have updated Adaware and it updates and scans and finds culprits...when is it no longer supported. I know you said the end of December, but it still seems to be working.

Sounds good and good for you.

One thing though about a replacement firewall. After you download but before you install the new firewall, you have to disable the Windows firewall.

Think the freeware version, Ad Aware SE no longer will be updating.

Its been replaced for quite some time with AdAware2007. Which I just downloaded and updated and it found nothing.

The free Windows Defender is running full time here which works well for me. I just run ad aware(15min) and the superantispyware(1Hr) occasionally on demand for an additional check up. They seldom find anything... so other things seem to work too.

Damcoy..... Yes, after I download and before I install the new firewall I will disable Windows Firewall. You are terrific -- thanks for being here and being so helpful to us newbies.

Thanks for the response ! Actually, I have both the free and pro versions each on a different computer. I updated both of them (manually) earlier this week after having updated on Jan 3 as well, but received no warning about lack of support for either free or pro versions as of yet. I'm not suggesting your information is wrong. Maybe they're just giving us a grace period of sorts before finally pulling the plug ?? Or perhaps mikie is right and it will only be the free version left unsupported ?

I'll likely uninstall it if/when one or both versions loses support. Better to have loved and lost......

Can you tell me more about SuperAntiSpyware? I am sending you the link for this review, so that you may look it over and tell me if this is true or not. I respect your input on this matter. I have the free AdAware SE Personal and didn't realize it was no longer being supported. I would appreciate more information about this other software and your comments from what this article is saying.
Like everyone else I am looking for the best Free Spyware out there.

The free version is basically a cleaning tool one of the best and yes to use it correctly there are manual functions to do like up-dating definitions an others, a lot of malware removers use this tool first to clean up a pc then proceed to the more difficult virus/ Trojan/ Worm/ removals that need to be done..

One more program that you can add to the list is spywareblaster. I used it for a couple years and have since switched to Linux. I still recommend that folks use it. It is free and you need to manually update it, but it helps to keep things from installing rather then cleaning them once they get installed. It isn't a resource hog either.

I have mixed feelings about zone alarm. They were the best for a long time, but they lost me as a customer in one of the version updates that went haywire.
