Renewing Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 question

I've inherited my daughters computer and she has Kaspersky on it. I'd like to renew as it is prompting me to, but when I go to the website it's only giving me an option to upgrade to Internet Security 2010. Is there some where I can just renew license for 2009? Thank you!

I believe they are phasing out 2009 and the only version available will be the new 2010. Most of them do that. It is how they get the updated version out and not just keep selling a subscription to the definitions to the old version.
Usually if you have an existing valid version that is time for renewal you can get the new one at a discount. Have you tried logging in to her account there and see what it is offering you?

Thanks, Raven. I'm sure he's behind on lots of stuff. Early in 2009, I had him change his update settings to notify him of updates, but not automatically download. That was to hold off on sp1 (at a time when I think I read here that folks were having trouble with it - but I didn't follow that topic, so didn't realize sp1 had become a good idea and that sp2 followed). We also set it that way bc. his computer was automatically updating and then rebooting when he was in the middle of doing other things. So this was to allow him to time his own downloads and installations. But he just never thought of it - and I didn't think I needed to keep track for him. I do keep track of his Avast, superantispyware, malwarebyte and spywareblaster. Every now and then when he's done surfing I have him leave out the laptop and go ahead and update and scan. I'll have to keep track of more than that, obviously. I got foxit reader on my ancient laptop in my office and love it. It takes so little room and does what I need quickly. Do you like pdf-xchange viewer more than foxit reader? Or does he need to use firefox to use foxit reader? I installed firefox for him - and set up tabs with the places he likes to go (did that in the summer) - but he hasn't used it. He's a bit resistant to tech changes. He balked when I got Tivo's - although he loves it now. He's a musician - and I got him Protools so he could record the music he wrote. That was over 1 1/2 years ago - and he hasn't learned it yet - he's barely scratched the surface. Last spring he bought an Imac bc. it was better for recording music. And now he's finally setting up his den and equipment. I'm hoping he'll actually learn the software this year. I'll take care of the rest for him so the only learning curve he has is Protools (certainly the most challenging of them all). But I digress. I'll check his other updates and run Secunia - I'm pretty sure I already put that on his computer last year. Thanks. Lynn.

the free ones like AVAST, AVIRA etc also have paid versions they make their money from those and are wonderful in that they also offer a free version to help those who can not afford to pay, the free versions have a bit less on them than the paid versions of course. It benefits everyone when each person can have good updated programs on their pc which is why many of the companies do offer a free version. In pay versions Kaspersky is an excellent choice, it is likely the one I would choose if I used a pay version it or Nod 32. I personally use AVAST free on my windows machines and feel it is an excellent product. The main thing to remember is layered security so along with your fully updated Antivirus you also need good antimalware programs like malwarebytes and superantispyware which are also free which should be updated and run full scans once a week or so. In addition having spywareblaster is another layer that protects you while online and requires no scans just update it weekly and hit the enable all protection button so the shield is green. And of course a firewall, if you have a properly configured router you have a hardware firewall there protecting you but you should have a software one also, vista and windows 7 have a decent one built in. SpywareBlaster SUPERAntiSpyware Free I think you have malwarebytes already? you will of course have to get Trend Micro fully removed from the pc before changing to any other antivirus program. as important these days is to make sure everything is kept updated and patched using Secunia tool makes that easy Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI)

I would be very worried Shax, I agree in trying a financial institution, I would not be comfortable at all at internet cafe or that type of place. Definitely do some research for the area you will be going to for safe locations. Having your personal info on a usb flash drive can be helpful. How do I stay safe in an internet cafe? using on screen keyboard rather than a real keyboard to stay safe from keyloggers there are some programs for this. How To Keep Your Online Accounts Safe At Internet Cafes this link has some great ideas and mentions the keyboard. putting your apps on the usb flash drive and password protecting it is something I would definitely do, you can get pretty much everything now in portable form like firefox and thunderbird, even antivirus programs to be able to scan a machine. Get online as safely as possible while traveling portable apps another option would be to have linux on a bootable usb drive. Boot and run Linux from a USB flash memory stick or carry a linux live cd you can boot from and use it on the computer rather than the windows.

Actually, you're probably better off that they didn't install the new drive. I think that when they do, they just pull the old drive and replace it with a blank one. This way, at least you've got the opportunity to transfer stuff. If I were you, I'd get an external drive enclosure so that you can transfer things from the old drive to the new one. If you have to return the old one to Dell, get something that will completely erase the old drive. Just deleting the files or reformatting leaves it in a state where data can be restored. I've bought refurbished drives before that had sensitive data on them. If you don't have to return it, either buy spinrite to recover the drive as much as possible or drill some holes through it and throw it out.

Yes, it looks like I'll have to upgrade to 2010, not a bad thing I guess, but I just thought it would be easier to renew my subscription instead up upgrading. They do have a 30% discount for the 2010 upgrade at $57.00, kinda pricey to me since I already have the product. Thanks again!

Paying to upgrade Kaspersky is of course entirely your choice. Bear in mind that there are several A-V products available that are either free, or free to try out. Avast is very popular, so is Avira. You could get either one from CNET. Wouldn't hurt to try one before you decide to spend the $. Just turn off your current Kaspersky before installing another A-V product.

If you choose to go with one of the free ones like AVAST, which is what I use, you will have to go through the full removal of Kaspersky before the install of any other AV, there is a removal tool for it, if you need it just let me know and I can link you to it.
do you have the full suite, AV and firewall or just AV? if the full suite you will need a new firewall also unless you have Vista or 7 and can use the windows firewall.

Raven... I have the Internet Security 2009, it does have the firewall. I also have Vista on the inherited machine. I guess I'm going to stick with Kaspersky,as I'm not to familar with deleting and installing new stuff on the computers. On their website it does show a live chat option that I can use if I run into trouble. Thanks so very much for your help! You are very kind.
