Internet Security Question

I have been reading posts from the Computer Help Forum Posters that they are not happy with Norton Security Suite. Well my subscription is running out and my cable supplier (Optimum OnLine) has offered subscribers free for the downloading CA Internet Security Suite. I am thinking of downloading it because I have heard so many stories about Norton... A while ago I had a problem with them also.

So my fellow Computer Help Forum Posters.... what do you think? I would appreciate any advice.

I have Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Sybot. Search & Destroy on my computer now. I Plan to uninstalled Norton Security because the subscription is running out.

I assume with the paid version you are getting automatic updates? Actually, I have both the free and pro versions each on a different computer. I updated both of them (manually) earlier this week after having updated on Jan 3 as well, but received no warning about lack of support for either free or pro versions as of yet. I'm not suggesting your information is wrong. Maybe they're just giving us a grace period of sorts before finally pulling the plug ?? Or perhaps mikie is right and it will only be the free version left unsupported ? I'll likely uninstall it if/when one or both versions loses support. Better to have loved and lost...... :-( Scott

Thank you both for your replies to my problem. At the present time I am not that confident with my computer skills, to use the fix that you graciously supplied Owbist and will hold on to your linked information for now. I did post the problem into the LanzDownForum, as suggested by Ravencajun, along with the requested logs, Etc. As I stated before my computer skills are not great and because of my nervousness about screwing things up worse than they already are, I may have to call in an "expert" to assist me with all of this. I do however appreciate both of you taking the time to help me out with this problem and the advice that you kindly give. Onward and upward!

Maybe read the whole article rather than just the mindset gossip of one employee who was probably chastised. You made it clear in the past you are a genuine Norton Fan. Update - 12 October Microsoft has issued the following statement in response to the publication of this article: "We are committed to protecting our customers, and our Microsoft antimalware solutions provide strong, comprehensive defence against malicious code and attacks. C'mon Mikie, this is silly. Yes, Broadband reports is a legit website, but this wasn't an item they reported, it was a forum post. Forums have no reputation, they're forums. Secondly, if you read more than the first few sentences of a page full of comments, you'll find what was alleged was viewed as an aberration caused by a rare configuration error. Indeed, it's mentioned that the Docsis standard provides security. Grandms, what mikie is suggesting (but not substantiating) and that I remain unconvinced of, is that there is a security risk down the wire. WPA is security for a Wifi signal, something completely different. Whew.

My XP laptop used microsofts OneCare for two years and it was by far the most simple no brainer Firewall, Anti-Virus, active spyware. It's a $50 annual subscription or online can be found for about half that.

I fiddled with the bunch of freewares and probably installed/uninstalled or tried all of the more popular ones.

Myself and the xp laptop are now believers in simple fully functional stuff... that you dont have to fiddle with; AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender anti-spyware & maybe not for everybody, the old Sygate Personal Firewall. Which you have to search for probably at download.com . It was bought by one of the biggies but the old freeware version is still popular and quite a decent firewall.

Mikie, If I download the free CA Internet Security Suite do I still need Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot. Search & Destroy that I now have on my computer? I had these two with my Norton Internet Security 2007.

Sorry for so many questions, but I am still a newbie.... Thank you in anticipation to a reply.

I run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D every now and then. Spybot has that nifty Innoculate feature that stops some baddies from installing to begin with & Ad-Aware is kind of another tool for added security.

Mikie....thank you so very much for all your help. I did a Norton Uninstall as per instructions from your link. Thanks again. I will keep Lavasoft ad Aware and Spybottom Search and Destroy too. I downloaded CA Internet Security Suite.... all goes well so far. I will let you know....

We use the free CA suite offered by our ISP. It is a little annoying when you first install, as it "learns" which programs you allow to access the internet (like your email and browsers). But after that, it is fairly invisible. You will still need your AdAware and Sypbot S&D, or similar programs, to run occasionally.

Don't know how your ISP works but a few years back RoadRunner offered FREE internet protection, for the first year only... After that it costs, a lot... I think one was $79. a year and the other two were $50, each... Read the fine print first.

susanjn.... So far I like CA Internet Security Suite....and it was free from my ISP.

Ritaotay .... yes, CA Internet Security Suite is offered to me free from my ISP.

I, too, have this free with Road Runner. I have found that I cannot open attachments sent to me via gmail. It tries to open the download with something called HIPS email. After some research elsewhere, it appears the firewall is the culprit. The only workaround I found was to disable the CA firewall, start Defender, download, open the attachment, disable Defender and restart the CA firewall. My computer also seems slower since its installation.

Reading the review on CNET solidified my intention to dump it.
