Windows 7 Internet Security 2012

What harm, other than being a ( insert expletive here) nuisance, will the phoney "Windows Internet Security 2012" do to my computer/programs.

I intend to have it removed this week but in the meantime is it safe enough to use my computer.

Thank you.

My sister had that and phoned me when she couldnt use any program other than Internet Explorer.

What a pain once she got there.. simple if i was there, but i remotely fix computers... and if she cant start a share program .. it certainly was a painful experience for me to talk her thru this computer stuff over the phone long distance. Just to get her to the point of stick the usb memory stick in any usb slot.

Here is another delightful little message box that popped up on start-up to-day.

Windows cannot find c:\windows\system32\igfxtry.exe

I tried doing a search to see what this one was all about but the "Windows Internet Security 2012" blocked the search!!

Any ideas about this other gem?
Thanks again.

owbist wrote: not2bright I would suggest you are safe enough. Lavasoft would have warned you about an update to the paid service if there were major changes. I assume with the paid version you are getting automatic updates? Either way just keep your eye on the window when the program starts to verify the changes in date as updates are downloaded to your program. Hi, owbist Thanks for the response ! Actually, I have both the free and pro versions each on a different computer. I updated both of them (manually) earlier this week after having updated on Jan 3 as well, but received no warning about lack of support for either free or pro versions as of yet. I'm not suggesting your information is wrong. Maybe they're just giving us a grace period of sorts before finally pulling the plug ?? Or perhaps mikie is right and it will only be the free version left unsupported ? I'll likely uninstall it if/when one or both versions loses support. Better to have loved and lost...... :-( Scott

Is windows security essentials really that good?

I found the following very interesting article written by 'imdoody' here:- It really does not matter what antivirus is used, but have it. Even more importantly, be smart when using the web and internet. Here are some very good steps that will prevent almost all Maleware/viruses (The crazy thing is, it's not a program; Its You, the end user!) 1. Don't look at Adult Material (aka Pr0n) on the internet. 2. Don't download kazaa, bear share, limewire, etc, etc.... buy your music for real. You end up spending more money paying "geekpatrol" (trying not to use real names) to fix all the viruses you received because your 13 yr old daughter was trying to download the latest Avril Lavreign song on limewire. 3. Stay away from anything free (i.e. "try this free for 2 weeks, cancel anytime, free acie berry diet pills... the list goes on..." some free stuff is good, like MS security essentials....) 4. Don't click on untrusted "Sponsored adds" or download email attachments from untrusted senders. (UPS, facebook, or ebay will not send an attachment to update your password, or track a package.... EVER!) 5. Facebook is great for catching up with old friends, or staying in touch with new ones. But stay away from all the ads and BS games. 6. Don't click on pop ups or windows that say things like "1200 viruses found click here to clean!" (Wait, how did they find 1200 viruses and when did I start a scan? OH I don't remember installing AntiVirus 2010!!!! ("alt+F4" is your friend it will close fake pop ups like these.) you may loose what you are looking at but it is worth it. 7. DO google search companies that you are unsure about followed by "Consumer reports" or "BBB" (Better Business Bureau) 8. DO use intra site searching when using google. Example: you are searching for Microsoft security essentials, if you put "site: microsoft.com" after your search keywords it will search through Microsofts site first and display those results before any other sites. 9. DO right click and select "Copy shortcut" for any unusual looking links and paste it into notepad, the displayed text for a link can be deceiving... http://www.ebay.com is much different from http://www.ebay.oedl.eds.something.com, websites are ready backwards starting with the .com then the primary domain, this example would be ebay. and.. 10. DO WATCH your kids internet and computer use.... No you are not snooping, or creeping, or invading privacy... you are being a good parent. I cannot stress this enough! The internet can be a dangerous place; I know, I've been there.... Look into http://www.opendns.com for keyword filtering, restricting websites, and many other free options. I hope this helps a bit, as I have been in the IT field for quite a few years I have seen all the different types of users, and one thing they all have in common is that they don't understand the technology. But with a couple easy to remember tips it is easy to stay away from viruses and maleware. one more, search: "uninstall software site: microsoft.com" and "removed Tool bars site: microsoft.com" get rid of un-needed programs and excessive toolbar addins.... if you have more than one tool bar in your internet explorer, you should get rid of them (and watch when installing apps, like yahoo messager, Adobe Reader, java, etc. They all have a prechecked checkbox to install a toolbar. just uncheck it.... ) O and Run an antivirus/antimaleware.... doesn't matter which just make sure some popup said if you buy this now it will fix your problems. If you choose to go with one of the free ones like AVAST, which is what I use, you will have to go through the full removal of Kaspersky before the install of any other AV, there is a removal tool for it, if you need it just let me know and I can link you to it. do you have the full suite, AV and firewall or just AV? if the full suite you will need a new firewall also unless you have Vista or 7 and can use the windows firewall. How can I get rid of malware 'Win 7 Security 2012'?
Q

Win 7 Antispyware 2012, Vista Antivirus 2012, and XP Security 2012 are all names for the same rogue anti-spyware program. This family of rogues is promoted in two ways. The first is through the use of fake online antivirus scanners that state that your computer is infected and then prompt you to download a file that will install the infection. The other method are hacked web sites that attempt to exploit vulnerabilities in programs that you are running on your computer to install the infection without your knowledge or permission. Regardless of how it is installed, once it is running on your computer it will install itself as a variety of different program names and graphical user interfaces depending on the version of Windows that is running. Regardless of the name, though, they are all ultimately the same program with just a different skin on it. I provided a self help link, but strongly recommend a malware removal forum lkie Landzdown. Thank you both for your replies to my problem.
At the present time I am not that confident with my computer skills, to use the fix that you graciously supplied Owbist and will hold on to your linked information for now.
I did post the problem into the LanzDownForum, as suggested by Ravencajun, along with the requested logs, Etc.
As I stated before my computer skills are not great and because of my nervousness about screwing things up worse than they already are, I may have to call in an "expert" to assist me with all of this.

I do however appreciate both of you taking the time to help me out with this problem and the advice that you kindly give.
Onward and upward!

You can do it, many have thought the same but were successful with the expert guidance of the lzd team. Just take your time and ask questions if you need to.

As Raven notes, you can do this. As the help is offered simply read one line at a time and follow along. DO NOT read the whole thing and decide it cannot be done, one line at a time and steady as she goes. Move away if you feel overwhelmed and have a coffee or smoke, which ever acts to calm the nerves then return.

No. As far as I know it comes bundled with rootkits and spyware modules. This means cyber crooks can steal certain info, usually account/password and credit card details. Other information is considered junk. You should remove Win 7 Internet Security 2012 malware before using your PC. Below is a link to detailed removal guide. Very important: use TDSSKiller to remove rootkits; otherwise this malware will be re-downloaded. Kudos!

Stivimi, thank you for your interest and linked information.

At the present time I am going through the process of, hopefully, clearing that menace from my computer at the LanzDown site, which was suggested to me by Ravencajun.
They are a wonderful bunch of people over there, who give their time up voluntarily to assist folks such as myself, in dealing with these malicious intrusions which have sneaked into our computers.

Hopefully we will see a positive result soon.

Ravencajun, Owbist and Stivimi, thank you all for your direction and encouragement, when things went awry and I was well in over my head and in great need of assistance.

Corrine, (Mystical Rose)(Mystical indeed!) over at the LanzDown computer forum, brought me through a maze of scans and checks that I would have never have had the first idea about, all of which, cleared up the intrusion into my computer, by that disabling Win 7 Internet Security 2012 malware.

You are all special people for sure, for giving the assistance you all do....Thank you all again,
Horton.

I followed your progress at Lzd and was happy to see you stuck with it and completed the clean up. Good for you!

It is always best to go the route of help forum that way you can know exactly what you are doing and why and make sure it is all gone! Especially with these nasty ones that have rootkits involved.
