printer-offline

Hi,

I have a HP D1500 printer. I have Windows Vista. The other day I wanted to print something, and it stated it was

offline. I am not computor savvy--

what does that mean, and what can I do?

I presume you had a window open up with a heading that said something like: HP Deskjet D1500 Series?

If so, there is a menu bar at the top of the window and one of the listings is "Printer." If you click on that, you will likely see a line with a checkmark in front of it that says: "Use printer offline." If you uncheck that line, the printer should go back online and start printing.

I have had several HP printers that would occasionally and inexplicably decide to go offline. You are probably doing nothing to cause this, but this is how you can get it going. I don't know of a permanent fix as I tried many things including uninstalling and reinstalling the software...to no avail.

If you have closed the window and don't know how to open another one up, just right-click on the printer icon in the task bar on the bottom of the screen, or try printing another document.

Try that and report back, please.

Hi Kudzo,
Thank you for your quick answer! I was not home during the day. I have the print screen in front of me. There is not
a menu selection. Only general and options. Under options,
it says-print all linked documents, print table of links.
Neither of the boxes are checked. I do not see printer offline. Thank you.

I can certainly sympathize with your situation...I have been without a printer for many months now because the ink cartridges are so expensive. I have a Canon Multipass 550 which has been a lifesaver in the past...being able to fax, copy and print...then when you do breakdown to buy one...install it and it still says empty cartridge, you really want to scream. But get this...the cartridge isn't the problem...it's the print head...to the tune of $50 or so and this is the third time I have replaced it and lord only knows how many cartridges were full before I wised up! Now get this....those print heads can be washed in your kitchen sink, dried on the counter and reinstalled...I sure am glad I saved the other two, i'll try that next time! But, now...I can't get the printer to print everything on the page....it prints one or two lines of the document, then skips a good paragraph size area and picks up the print again......any suggestions! and of course, it doesn't help that the manual is online and no hard copy is provided...I'm ready to do the old uninstall/reinstall thing and see if that helps! Technology sucks....here today, obsolete before noon the next day! and it wasn't a cheapee either...about $250- $300 smack a roos 2-3 years ago! Even with the cheapees....you spend a fortune on ink, that's were they make the money i guess! So what do I have to lose if the washing dosen't work......blank pages! pk, yes, frustrated is an understatement. Don't like spending so much time on such things that are probably easy. Did a lot of research with no resolve. Printer is hooked up to a desktop; DT hooked up to router. I don't "think" the printer is connected directly to router. Not sure what ethernet is. Laptop works wirelessly to the printer. Laptop is 8 mos old. Was working perfectly fine with printer until this new router was installed the other day. I have not tried plugging the printer directly to laptop. I'll try that in the morning. Brain is fried right now so I'll continue on this quest in the morning since I need the printer for work. Thanks for the help. Wonder if uninstalling the computer software from laptop, then reinstalling it again, will work.

Thank you so much for the input, but I finally gave up fighting this thing every time there's a power interruption and bought a USB cable...hooked it up...and I'm good to go. No more stressing out...and running to the other end of the house just to print something! The other computer is really slow and takes forever and a year to fire up to use it's wired printer. Go to your Control Panel - double click on the Printers & Faxes icon. Right Click the selected printer - Select USE PRINTER ONLINE. That should clear it up. This is where you can also purge your unprinted documents that are causing you grief. Just double click on that printers icon - select PRINTER and in the drop down menu from that select "Cancel documents"

Ok...try this. Go to Start > Control Panel and double-click on "Printers"; then double-click on the name of the printer you want to use (there may be more than one printer listed). Does that bring up the window I described?

Hi I I'm not seeing that window. I saw my printer-it just
said default printer-offline when I put my mouse arrow
over it---I think you'll be sorry you started to reply to me. Thank you.

When you went into your Control Panel, did it bring up any window? When you say "I saw my printer-it just
said default printer-offline," where did you see this?

I'd like to help, but you've got to be more specific...

Excuse an oldie stepping in here, may be way off base, but I have to turn my printer ON, BEFORE I want to do anything, or it isn't acknowledged by the computer, might be worth a shot?

hi Kudzu,I watch my grandkids and get on here late. My husband unplugged and plugged it in, and guess what!!
It printed--thank you so much for your help. I feel I was
starting to be a nuisance. Sorry about that.

Oh,I have a laptop and at times my keyboard doesn't type
at times--I did get a spare keyboard to plug in, so it's
really not a big issue--hope you don't see me post for a while. Thank you again.

mimilm, you are not a nuisance, and please feel free to post any time you have a problem. I sometimes post about a minor problem that I probably should be able to figure out for myself, but, HEY! it's what keeps this forum going. 8-)
