Miele dishwasher - model selection

So my wife and I went to the local appliance store and checked out the Bosch and Miele dishwashers. She strongly preferred the rack layout in the Miele so we're locked into that brand. She also doesn't want stainless steel; we could live with white or black or I could build a custom panel and semi-match what we've got there now.

I'm looking at the Dimension and Crystal lines because we like the option of the 3rd rack. Of course, the Crystal 5225 doesn't have the 3rd rack... all the others do but require a custom door panel. Is there a resource listing door panel compatibility?

We're looking at these options & are looking for feedback. Thanks!

Crystal g5105: $1200 (last year's model). Not sure why this one is $200 cheaper than this year's Crystal models. We're a little leary about buying an old model.
Crystal g5285scvi + custom panel: $1400+panel. A white or black panel seems to cost $250. If I'm going to spend $1600+ then I might as well step up to a Dimension?
Dimension g5605sci: $1700 + small panel.
Dimension 5670scvi: $1700 + full panel
Dimension 5675scvi: $1780 + full panel. This is identical to the 5670scvi but it's not ADA compliant. Why would this model cost more?

Why be leary of buying last years model ???

Does the new model have some feature the old one doesn't that you'll really use ? If you'd bought that model last Nov. - think you'd be losing sleep today over the model that replaced the one you have ?

I believe there is a 5225 /crystal model that comes with a cutlery tray. It'll have the SC designation before the finish code ie 5225SCBK for a black model.

I think the non- ADA models have a bit bigger interior, hence the bigger price.

The 5225BK and 5225WH come with the basket, the 5225SC comes with the 3rd rack/tray (this is a departure from prior year's models).

Has anyone heard a Q2 and a Q4 washer? What is the noise level difference? About what SPLdB does Q2 correspond to? Thanks!

Everyone is entitled to express their opinions. xedos is one of the most knowledgeable, reliable and trusted contributors to this forum for many years. But declarations like "The Asko is world above the Miele in every way!" are opinion, not fact. I had an Asko washer that needed a controller board which could not be purchased -- not anywhere in the world. I even tried to get one in Australia. The washer had been used full time for only 2 years. I had a Viking kitchen that has been slowly replaced over the past 10 years -- every appliance purchased for the kitchen had some repair issue, chief among them the oven which was bought back. Heat setting decals are now beginning to wear off the third cooktop as they did on the previous two. The refrigerator had a freon repair (equivalent to heart surgery) 3 door recalls for hinge failure, a new controller board and failed door seals. The vent hood draws, which is as much as one can say. No one here is making money off recommendations in any way. What you call "bashing" is hardly that from an owner who has been obliged to replace expensive appliances within 10 years. xedos gets that. Glad to hear your Viking range is working well. Hope that continues because if it's older than 2 years and you need a part you will see why some of us urge caution with brands like Asko and Viking that have unfortunate history.

I've had the Miele Diamante Plus G2143SC with the Clean Touch Stainless door for a month now. We started with a GE Profile, which lasted about 1.5 years, then had an Electorlux that we only kept for about 6 weeks. It was a tough choice between the Miele and Bosch, but we felt the Miele was a better unit. In the month we've had it, the Miele unit has been problem free...something we can't say about the GE or Electrolux it replaced. At first we weren't sure if we'd like the 3rd rack cutlery tray, but after the 1st day of using it we'd never no back to the old type of silverware baskets. I would suggest using the Miele brand rinse aid, as it really makes a difference. It costs about $11 for 550ml bottle, but it would probably last over a year, as we have the unit set to dispense 1ml in each load (the 3ml was the default setting). I was using the Cascade rinse aid that I had left over from the Electrolux, but it gave the Miele unit and the plastic cups a "chemical" smell that I never noticed before. Once I got it out of the system and added the Miele rinse aid, the chemical smell stopped. We're still using the Cascade Action Packs dishwasher detergent, which work just fine (no chemical smell with them), but we've tried a few (demo) tabs of the Miele brand dishwasher detergent. They are expensive ($30 for 60 tabs, $0.50 each) but they have a ridge down the center so you can brake them in half. We tried a few like this (split in half), and they worked just fine. I'm not sure if we'll buy the box of the Miele dishwasher tabs and just break them in half for use (which would give 120 half-tab loads at $0.25 each), or buy the Cascade Complete (48 count for $12, $0.25 each). Also, get a few hard water tests strips to see what your hard water level is. That way you can properly set up the right amount on the dishwasher. I'm not sure if the water softener makes a difference or not, but everything comes out clean. The box of Miele salt was about $10 and you pour the full amount into the water softener container in the bottom. It should last us about a year since our city water isn't that hard. I was able to stop at the local appliance store and too a few pictures of the new Futura models. Here is the front of the Diamond that replaces the LaPerla, but it doesn't have the wood-cabinet face installed yet. The bottom basket on the Diamond. All the spikes on the front fold down (see the orange clips). Middle basket on the Diamond. Not a lot has changed here since the LaPerla. Here's the new 3D Cutlery tray. I like how the two sided can move back and forth to make room for larger glasses. But the middle part that moves up and down is sort of a gimmick, there's really no reason why you wouldn't just leave it in the lower position. Here s the bottom rack on the Crystal, which replaces the Diamante Plus. Differences here the Diamond are that there isn't as much foldable spikes on the front, and not as many fold down stemware slots on the sides. I didn't take pictures of the middle and upper rack on the Crystal, since those are identical to what is on the Diamante that I own. The Crystal does not have the 3D Cutlery tray. This is the front of the Classic G2505 that replaces the Inspira. The lower rack on the Classic. This one on display has the cutlery basket instead of the cutlery tray on top. It also doesn't have any fold-down spikes on the front, or the side stemware holders. And here's the Futura model comparison sheet. If I didn't already have the Diamante and was going to buy one, I'd probably go with the Dimension or Dimension Plus, since those have a majority of the features and are still in the $1600-1800 range, which is $1000 less than the Diamond.

I'm on my 2nd Miele. The first model (Diamante) I got in 2010, but earlier this year the motor died. My dealer happened to still have a new in box Crystal G6625SCU for a few hundred less that MSRP, so I went with it. It is a nice model, with a few more features than my older one (door auto open drying). The Lumen and Diamond models are quite a bit more as they have a bunch more wash programs, LED lights inside, auto close & open door (or knock to open). But the actual wash is going to be the same, which is the most important feature. I couldn't see spending an extra $1000 for all those "extras" when the end result of clean dishes would be the same as the Crystal (or Dimension) model as a lower price.

There you go - the new feature for this years model is the 3rd tray. The price has been increased to match too.

FWIW - you can order the third tray to install into any Miele DW without one. You screw in two runners with 2 screws and add the tray and some retaining clips. Last time I looked it was @ $175 from parts. Is prob. $250- now.

I don't know the numbers off hand but ALL Mieles are quite enough. If you are uber sensitive to appliance noise then you'd better get a closed off kitchen with a door to contain the noise. You should also order a miele with a Q5 rating as it has the most padding or order the most expensive Bosch model which claims to be the quietest DW in the market. You will still be able to hear it though !

You should also take these ratings with a grain of salt as nobody publishes how they conduct the test, and under what conditions - sound chamber or an average kitchen , and what is an average kitchen and is that an average German or American kitchen and ......and ......and....

So, back to what I said - all mieles and other euro dishwashers for that matter will be quiet enough except for the obsessive compulsive dishwasher connoisseur. They will also be quieter than what you have now.

I bought the dimension line with the 3rd rack. All I can say is that it is incredible. After the dish slosher that the Fisher Paykel that came with the house, it is a welcome relief. It is super quiet... you only really hear it when it discharges water into the drain.

Cleaning performance is superb. It beat all my expectations. Good luck!

Also, I'm not sure just adding a third rack after-party is the same. As it is, each rack has it's own dedicated cleaning mechanism. Not sure if the 2 row ones are the same.

xedos, they -removed- the 3rd rack and added $200 this year.

alexaqui - I am sure about adding the third rack after the fact.

We have done this for clients half a dozen times over the last 5-10 years. The sprayer for the third rack on a miele is in the ceiling of the unit.

greg - the 5225sc (with the third row) is still current isn't it ? Only the G51xx models were retired and of those only one model (in 3 finishes) didn't have the third row / cutlery tray! Pretty much the same as now.

All models went up in price this year , just like last year, and the year before, and next year too.

G5225 , in stainless, with a cutlery tray is available for $1,399 - or- $1,299 without tray from AJMdison outa New York.

$100 bucks installed for the tray /thrid row is CHEAP !
