usb stick wireless nic - any good??

Are those little USB Stick wireless network devices any good?

Right now I'm using a USB network device for my laptop.

It has a cord that goes to a little box with an antenna.

The box is about the size of a deck of cards.

I'm thinking about a 4 port hub and a USB stick NIC.

But are they any good?? What kind of range can I get??

I'm using a NetGear USB wireless dongle on my system and have been for years.

(My better half's pc is in another room and has the NetGear router.)

I have no complaints and my speeds are as good as her speeds too!

This is what he got me - from the box: SMC Networks Wireless Cardbus Adapter "Supports blazing wireless communcation at up to 108 MBPS." Advanced Wireles Security, includes Wi-Fi Protected Access. "Share your existing cable connection with multiple computers by addind a high performance Barriade g Router with USB Print server" Don't know about the last part, I could live without the print server, I just want to be able to work and browse in other rooms in the house besides my basement where the cable connection is. As for the memory card - I went to the "Crucial" RAM Scanner Web site as recommended by Zep516 on a previous post that I found through the search menu. I clicked on the Crucial System Scanner, and it said: Maximum Memory Capacity: 1024MB Currently Installed Memory: 256MB Available Memory Slots: 1 Number of Banks: 2 Dual Channel Support: No CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel CPU Family: Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz Model 2, Stepping 9 CPU Speed: 2392 MHz Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 512MB per slot.* So I couldn't remember the exact number of what I have, but what I have is 256 MB of currently installed memory and one empty "slot."

I'll try to answer several of your questions. Yes, you will need a special router, but I would NOT buy the one the salesman is pushing on you. I have one made by Cradlepoint (the CTR350) which I bought at Amazon.com and did not pay nearly that much for it. It is very small and I plug the wireless "card" (modem) into a USB port on the router. Then I connect my desktop computer via Ethernet (cat 5 cable). I connect my laptop via the wireless signal sent from the router. It is very easy to set up the security on the router. In addition, I also use software firewalls on my computers. The built-in wireless in the laptop is not the same thing as what you plug in. It allows the laptop to receive and use wireless signals, and all new laptops come with this. Now whether this would be faster than your DSL is questionable. Sometimes my service with Verizon is quite fast, but at busy times, mostly evenings, it slows down quite a bit. With DSL you have a dedicated line, so your speed should remain constant. I went this route, because I cannot get DSL or cable, and I suffered over 2 years with satellite. Then Verizon's 3-G (EVDO) became available to me. You need to be fairly close to a tower to get a good, strong signal also. If your cell phone service is good, chances are the wireless Internet would be good, also. I was able to buy a used "card", which is really a modem, so that I was not locked into a contract and I can end the service at any time without penalty. So it's your call. If you are unhappy with your DSL, you might give it a try. Do they have a trial period during which you can return anything and only owe for the usage you had? If not. . . . .It's your call.

That sounds like a novel tool for weight loss (keeping the fridge door closed because you're standing against it to use your PC). I can attest to the effectiveness of aluminum foil signal reflectors. They work surprisingly well. Wifi signals are easily blocked by walls, wiring and pipes, furniture, water heaters, and general "stuff" causing obstructions in the signal path. Which is why movement of router or receiver some inches in one direction or another (including up or down) can make a big difference.

Ginny I own a Designer SE and I would highly recommend the USB vs floppy. I started out with the D1 and traded up and absolutely love the convenience of the bigger screen, USB and all the other wonderful features. Some dealers depending on how old your D1 is, they will give you a good trade-in. Good luck on your decision. You do know there is a re-call on some of the D1's? Go on there website and they give you the numbers, there is a risk of catching on fire. Wanda

yes they are ok, actually using it with a hub would allow you some movement of it which can be helpful to get the best signal, being able to move it around on the desk can help, when plugged right into the usb port on the laptop or pc you have to just use it in place.

I've been using them for years with no problem. I use one on a desktop, which is far from my router and a laptop which travels around the house and office.

I don't know about a hub but I have an 'extension' cable (about 6 feet long) that hooks onto my adapter and the other end plugs into my usb port.
Allows me to set the wireless adapter almost anywhere.

My experience is that their range is not that great. And if your signal is on the weak side, you end up being concerned about every little antenna movement that disrupts the signal.

My pc (and adapter) is Way on the other side of the house and upstairs from the other pc. (The one with the modem)

My speed is as fast as the main pc and I have never really had any problems.

I am on Verizon dsl if that means anything?

I really love the Netgear modem and adapter.

Right now the computer is less than 5 feet from the router.
We did an experiment once where I went to a neighbor's house
which is 1000 feet across a clear hay field and used her
laptop to see how far it could pick up the signal. We got
a real good signal in her back yard (about 900 feet).
Her laptop had wireless built into it.
So I'm getting a good strong signal here at home.
If I ever travel anywhere I'd like to know what to expect.

wow- 900 ft! I use wireless satellite in Wyoming and the router is at the other end of the house, upstairs. If I am downstairs in the basement I still get a fast, perfect link. Better than the Cricket I use in the winter down south!

I am on comcast high speed, I can take my netbook out in my back yard and get a good signal, I pick up my neighbors network all the time several of them in fact and they can see mine too of course we all have the strongest security set up on them so no one can get in.
