usb stick wireless nic - any good??

Are those little USB Stick wireless network devices any good?

Right now I'm using a USB network device for my laptop.

It has a cord that goes to a little box with an antenna.

The box is about the size of a deck of cards.

I'm thinking about a 4 port hub and a USB stick NIC.

But are they any good?? What kind of range can I get??

I'm using a NetGear USB wireless dongle on my system and have been for years.

(My better half's pc is in another room and has the NetGear router.)

I have no complaints and my speeds are as good as her speeds too!

"Share your existing cable connection with multiple computers by addind a high performance Barriade g Router with USB Print server" Don't know about the last part, I could live without the print server, I just want to be able to work and browse in other rooms in the house besides my basement where the cable connection is. As for the memory card - I went to the "Crucial" RAM Scanner Web site as recommended by Zep516 on a previous post that I found through the search menu. I clicked on the Crucial System Scanner, and it said: Maximum Memory Capacity: 1024MB Currently Installed Memory: 256MB Available Memory Slots: 1 Number of Banks: 2 Dual Channel Support: No CPU Manufacturer: GenuineIntel CPU Family: Mobile Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.40GHz Model 2, Stepping 9 CPU Speed: 2392 MHz Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700,DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 512MB per slot.* So I couldn't remember the exact number of what I have, but what I have is 256 MB of currently installed memory and one empty "slot."

I have 2 wireless mouses or um mice?? that I really like one is a GE and one is a Gear Head MP2000WU both are the smaller size notebook mouse which I much prefer they just fit and feel better in my hand than the big ones. The Gear Head has the suede feel rubber on the click part of the top and on the sides where you grip it. They both have the small usb receiver that is about the size of a thumb drive or smaller. The GE has a place that opens on the top that the receiver stores in which is nice. One takes AAA one takes AA batteries. I have tried wireless keyboards and no matter the brand I just did not like them, they go through batteries like crazy even the rechargables. GEAR HEAD MP2000WU Mine is all black but it is this one. the dongle for this one is a bit wide and in some cases can partly block the usb port beside it but it does come with a cord to use as an extension if you need it. GE 98792 that is what the GE one looks like, I use it daily it is my main mouse and I love it, nice and small easy to hold batteries last quite well and you can put the dongle inside under the black center part. I have had it and use it daily for a couple years I think, it has never had any problems. oh I just found my mouse in pink, for an excellent price too , it is usually listed around $30 ... I may need this pink one LOL Pink but I see it also comes in blue, mine is silver and black. I had bought a set with a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse but brought it back after a few days, it ate batteries and the keyboard had keys doing kkkkkksssssssss ooooooo etc all the time, Hated it. This one is also a great mouse my husband has it, it comes in handy since he does a lot of conferences and can use the built in laser pointer. It last forever on batteries. Has extra long range. Ginny I own a Designer SE and I would highly recommend the USB vs floppy. I started out with the D1 and traded up and absolutely love the convenience of the bigger screen, USB and all the other wonderful features. Some dealers depending on how old your D1 is, they will give you a good trade-in. Good luck on your decision. You do know there is a re-call on some of the D1's? Go on there website and they give you the numbers, there is a risk of catching on fire. Wanda

Do understand that using a "wireless" speaker in your HT is going to involve making a significant compromise in audio fidelity ... I'm not saying don't do it, I just want to ensure you realize that it's far from ideal. Sorry, I don't have any specific recommendations for you - although I do recall reading an article recently that mentioned Texas Instruments was exhibiting a new wireless receiver & speaker combo (the latter with built-in amplification) at CES2006.

yes they are ok, actually using it with a hub would allow you some movement of it which can be helpful to get the best signal, being able to move it around on the desk can help, when plugged right into the usb port on the laptop or pc you have to just use it in place.

I've been using them for years with no problem. I use one on a desktop, which is far from my router and a laptop which travels around the house and office.

I don't know about a hub but I have an 'extension' cable (about 6 feet long) that hooks onto my adapter and the other end plugs into my usb port.
Allows me to set the wireless adapter almost anywhere.

My experience is that their range is not that great. And if your signal is on the weak side, you end up being concerned about every little antenna movement that disrupts the signal.

My pc (and adapter) is Way on the other side of the house and upstairs from the other pc. (The one with the modem)

My speed is as fast as the main pc and I have never really had any problems.

I am on Verizon dsl if that means anything?

I really love the Netgear modem and adapter.

Right now the computer is less than 5 feet from the router.
We did an experiment once where I went to a neighbor's house
which is 1000 feet across a clear hay field and used her
laptop to see how far it could pick up the signal. We got
a real good signal in her back yard (about 900 feet).
Her laptop had wireless built into it.
So I'm getting a good strong signal here at home.
If I ever travel anywhere I'd like to know what to expect.

wow- 900 ft! I use wireless satellite in Wyoming and the router is at the other end of the house, upstairs. If I am downstairs in the basement I still get a fast, perfect link. Better than the Cricket I use in the winter down south!

I am on comcast high speed, I can take my netbook out in my back yard and get a good signal, I pick up my neighbors network all the time several of them in fact and they can see mine too of course we all have the strongest security set up on them so no one can get in.
