Why you should not be using MSconfig to control startups!! http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804 Many people frequently use MSconfig as a long term solution to control startup processes and services. You will also see many websites condoning use of MSconfig and teaching you how to use it for controlling startups. This is a very bad idea for many reasons. 1. MSconfig was designed to be used only as a temporary debugging/troubleshooting tool. It was not meant to be used for long term solutions. 2. MSconfig does not show all startups anyway. 3. If you uninstall programs while they are being disabled with MSconfig, they will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to properly get everything removed. MSconfig will leave orphan entries if/when installed software is uninstalled while under the control of MSconfig . When/if MSconfig is turned back to normal startup, it will give errors on boot due to those orphan entries. 4. MSconfig and Services: o If you uninstall programs while you have some of the programs services being controlled with MSconfig, the programs will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to get everything properly removed. o When you uncheck a service in msconfig, you completely disable it. If you uncheck the wrong one, you may not be able to restart your computer. o It is safer to control services by using Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services (this runs services.msc). 5. You can lock malware items into your registry that you may not see anymore until some point in time where you switch back to Normal Startup mode and now you can cause total reinfection of your PC with the malware. You need to remove the malware not mask it. fwiw I just ran that program and looked around to try to figure out what you are saying. It was sitting there finished running waiting on me when I woke up. Nowhere in it can I find my email address's. It does show cookies which are written 'mike@gardenweb.com, mike@verizon.com, etc ... none of which are my email address. My computer user account/login is mike, which is where that name on each cookie came from. I dont show any firefox probably because its never been written into my registry as I've never installed it on this install of windows. If I had in the past installed a firefox and uninstalled it... it sounds like it would have left keys in the registry then I suspect SpybotSD would want to list it as protected too and write a whole bunch of unnecccessary keys blocking a whole bunch of urls under its main configuration keys. If that makes any sense and answers any of your questions... great!

I just went in and looked again under the immunize section and now I know which ones are unprotected. One is Firefox: 6, 998,998,998= 3000 then there is Mozilla: 6, 998,998,998=3000 a total of 6000 unprotected items. I do not have Firefox installed nor do I have Mozilla installed on this computer. That is strange that they are even counting those since they are not installed. I guess they would be unprotected. "LOL" Under the Firefox browser and the Mozilla browser it is showing my old email address not my current one. Don't know why that is either. Is it ok to leave it with the old address since I am not using those browsers? I did not install Spybot the guys who built this computer did. I have always been somewhat confused with Spybot. I did download the new SuperAntiSpyware and have been using it along with my other Spyware removal programs. thirdfrt!!!

My XP laptop used microsofts OneCare for two years and it was by far the most simple no brainer Firewall, Anti-Virus, active spyware. It's a $50 annual subscription or online can be found for about half that. I fiddled with the bunch of freewares and probably installed/uninstalled or tried all of the more popular ones. Myself and the xp laptop are now believers in simple fully functional stuff... that you dont have to fiddle with; AVG Anti-Virus, Windows Defender anti-spyware & maybe not for everybody, the old Sygate Personal Firewall. Which you have to search for probably at download.com . It was bought by one of the biggies but the old freeware version is still popular and quite a decent firewall.
