I did the plumbing on an elderly care facility where they installed three walk-in tubs. One was like s corner shower stall that has a full length vertical enclosure on the back and one side and a molded top. On the opposite side and front the wall comes up about 3.5' with a door on the front. There is a shower curtain extending down from the top on the open side and front. You enter the stall through a door then sit down and have a choice of shower or sit down bath with the water slightly higher than your waist while seated. The second one was like a freestanding box about 3.5' wide on each side and 3.5' deep. A person can enter through a door in the front of the unit then sit on a seat while taking a bath. The beauty of this unit in an elderly situation is that while the elderly person is in the tub an attendant can easily reach them from the front or either side. The third one is like a conventional bathtub except it has a door in the front wall where a person can walk in, then sit on an elevated bench which hydraulically lowers them down to the floor level of the tub and lifts them up again. I will caution you that i thought these units were a bit pricey when we first installed them, but based upon the verbal feedback I have received from both the care attendants and residents of the home in my opinion they are well worth the expense. My understanding is that newer models of walk in tubs have significantly faster draining so you don't have to sit in the cold for extended periods of time but you should obviously verify this. Do you actually like taking baths or do you find showering to be too exhausting and painful. I recently remodeled and replaced the tub/shower with a walk in shower with a large bench at one end. It has two hand held shower heads as my designer suggested that I place one of the hand held shower heads by the bench so it was easily accessed whlle sitting down. I use the bench a LOT because of my arthritic knee which make standing for periods of time painful and I don't find sitting on my bench while showering to be exhausting - I find it relaxing. However, this obviously doesn't replicate the experience of bathing if you are a bath person - which I am not. I don't think any of the walk in baths would give you the full on experience of soaking your body up to your head in warm water if that is the therapeutic experience you are seeking.
