Framing a bathroom mirror with glass tile

I have glass accent tiles in my shower and want to use those same tiles as a frame around the mirrors in my bathroom. The contractor said if I went to a glass place and had them cut plain mirror glass in whatever size I wanted, he would mount the mirrors on the wall for me and have his tile guy tile around them (the tiles would be attached to the wall). I'm not so sure I want to attach tiles to the wall in case I ever want to change the mirror (or if for some reason I hate the finished product). Is there any reason why the tile guy couldn't attach the glass tiles directly to the glass instead? Is there some other way? Has anyone ever done something like this? Pictures would be great if anyone has done it. Thanks, Susan

Why not mount the whole thing (mirror + tiles) to a piece of plywood and hang the structure on the wall? Or buy a framed mirror and glue the tiles to the frame.

Weedy, I've been thinking about doing something similar to what you suggest. These are small, thin tiles that come attached to a mesh material and they are meant to be grouted. In order to use glue, they would need to be individually pulled off the mesh and glued down, one by one, but that seems like a tedious job that the tile guy isn't going to want to do. The tiles are meant to be left on the mesh, (the mesh can be cut to size), applied in whole strips, then grouted. The mirrors I am planning will be 30x30 or 30 x 36, I haven't decided yet. I want to go to a picture framing store this weekend and find out about having a frame made, to which the tile guy would be able to apply, then grout the glass tiles. The color of the frame would have to be a fairly close match to the vanities since you'd be able to see the edges when it was hung. Then I could have a mirror place make up the mirror glass and have them insert it in the tiled frame. I'm hoping this is a workable idea.

In the meantime, if anyone out there has suggestions or pictures of mirrors framed in glass tile, I would love to see. Thanks, Susan

foxy, are you still around? Oddly enough, for our next bath we're thinking of using the smaller Hollviken and Danze Parma, and here you are using the same things! (we have our big hollviken in our master bath and love it every day). Would you share your thoughts on how the Parma is holding up? Would you use it again, knowing how it's been so far? TIA -- hope you see this...OH, we're also using some mosaic tile accent in and amongst larger format tiles lol...I *swear* I wasn't intentionally copying :)

Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

I have a friend with a giant mosaic of Marilyn Munroe's face as the back wall of their shower- probably ten feet long and eight feet tall. It is amazing- all done is glass mosaic. Drama works if it is well planned for and the whole house is similarly designed. I think your sample tile could work well as the entire back wall of a shower with everything else white...

I'm going to have a tile backsplash so the mirror could stop there and would look good I think. I was contemplating a wall faucet, but not sure I can make that work if I do a frameless mirror. I couldn't do the faucet through the mirror because the water spots would drive me batty, tho I like the look. Probably too contemporary for my 1980's NW style home.
