Hood sizing - Need to make Quick Decision!

I have the opportunity to get a great deal on a Wolf pro wall hood for my 48" Bluestar range. My range has 4 burners (76,000 total BTU) and a 24" griddle (30,000 BTU). I understand the ideal hood would be 54" wide and 24"-27" deep with a 1,200-1,500 CFM blower. This hood is a Wolf low profile design which is 48" wide and 22" deep. The specs suggest using a 600 or 900 CFM blower which is inadequate for my range. The salesperson said this is irrelevant and we can simply buy a 1,200 or 1,500 CFM blower to use with it. If this is the case, why didn't Wolf put that in the specs? I'm also concerned about the 22" depth for the griddle. I don't want to undersize my ventilation just because this is a good deal, as it won't be a good deal if it doesn't get the job done. I want to believe the salesperson, but I also know they want to get rid of this hood. Thanks for any help.

You can certainly buy a larger blower, so long as it either fits or is mounted external to the hood. Ducting should be appropriate for the air flow. The hood to duct interface should be appropriate for the duct size. Strive for 1000 to 2000 feet per minute in the duct at full power. Actual flow may be only 2/3 of rated flow.

You might consider spacing the hood out from the wall and putting a blanking plate, or maybe a curved piece of stainless steel at the wall to bring effluent rising along the wall into the hood. The front of the hood should overlap the rising effluent plume from the cooking surfaces and the rising combustion products from the edges of the pans. This may require a significant overlap of hood to stove depending on pan sizes, burner configuration, hood height, etc. Sketch the geometry from a side view and draw a line from the pan edge upward with a ~ 22.5 degree angle from vertical to represent the expanding effluent plume.

The hood will not pull in significant amount of effluent. It has to capture it first by overlapping its rising trajectory. What is missed on the first attempt will be removed from you house in the fullness of time.

Wolf didn't put it into the specs because the low profile hoods are not designed to be used with 48" Pro Style ranges. Hoods over professional ranges should be tall enough and deep enough to have a capture area much larger than what this 4" tall x 22" deep hood can do. The capture area is what contains the odor, grease, smoke, and smell so the blower can do its job. No amount of power will overcome this handicap. The lack of capture area will render the hood useless with the griddle, wok cooking, anything odiferous, accidental burnings and so on. IMO, if this was free it would still be a bad deal.
Width, depth, and height are just as important for performance as CFM's.

Why go with a BlueStar 48" range and then circumvent the performance to save money? The range is not cheap. The hood shouldn't be either. It is just as important to the layout and funtionality of your kitchen as every other appliance. People are resistant to that idea but it's true. Would you buy a nice stereo and skimp on the speakers, or a sports car and put spare tires on it?

Enough with my soapbox. Avoid the low profile designs or you will be unhappy

Curious where you heard/read about the Berta hood promo with the 30" Berta range. I keep checking their website but only see the free MW with cooktop/oven combo ending 6/30/13. Am I reading incorrectly or are is the hood promo on a dealer site? I would appreciate information as I will be purchasing the 30" PRO as well. Thanks.

I got an Ektorp chair for free from someone who was getting rid of it. It is surprisingly comfortable. However their pug sat on the back cushion for several years and this created an unfixable dent. (My cats adopted this dent as their own.) Ikea does not sell replacement cushions. Despite this the chair is still comfortable and in good condition. If I really wanted to I could get new cushions made at a foam shop, because you can remove the slipcovers. In my view this is also handy for keeping the chair clean. Remove the slipcover from the dryer when still slightly damp and put it on immediately, this makes it easier and less wrinkled. I have no experience with the other sofa. However I have had several cheap pieces made of bi-cast leather (a chair from Fred Meyer, dining benches from World Market) and was severely disappointed in how fast the foam inside broke down with use. I mean, crazy fast! And on my furniture, there is no way to replace that foam. So the pieces became uncomfortable junk quickly. So check out the construction and consider that when making your decision. Believe it or not, the Ektorp may win in terms of durability. You might try googling for reviews of each sofa. I am confident you will find many bloggers who have reviewed the Ektorp - it is a very popular Ikea classic. If you are lucky you will find some reviews of the Cindy Crawford too. A few other thoughts: How does it work to have 4 people on a sofa that has two reclining sections? That seems a little tricky. My ex had an old reclining sofa that I absolutely hated - it had sharp things poking out with age and the metal frame was easily felt through the padding. It prevented us from snuggling because the frame was in the way. And it was ugly. And, it was kinda broken in the reclining department. I must say visually I prefer the Ektorp. And theres less stuff to break on it. Hope that helps....

I should add that I was trained/certified/highly in demand tutor (was asked for a lot by both NY cos. who were sponsoring schools and schools themselves, also had brisk private tutoring business) for both PR and SK at different times, but that ended about 15 years ago...so 1) I have an inside view of both organizations and materials and 2) it was a long time ago :). IMO the PR materials were always more insightful and canny than the SK materials; no offense to SK, because the organization was much more comfortable to work for than PR, but I do have to hand it to PR for better researchers/writers, some of whom I used to know and hang with a bit back in the day (including the founders...those were crazy times)... And Elizabeth, you'll note that I *did* leave a possibility for group instruction, in my second-to-last paragraph. It just seems to me to be a more diluted, general approach and more costly, even though when you sign up for a group you get a certain number of hours of private tutoring at a reduced price, or at least you used to...with private tutoring, you don't need to spend as much, IME, and if you do, you know that the time is totally devoted to your child's needs, not the needs of other children that are not relevant to yours... Of course I'm hoping that by the time my DD is at that bridge, the whole test culture will have imploded and disappeared :) -- I agree w/mary 228 that more and more good schools are willing to look at other factors besides standardized tests, which shows great perspicacity on their parts, IMO :)

dekr8, What area of the country do you live in? Is hot weather & sun exposure an issue? If so, consider a lighter tone roof. If not, then I would suggest darker if you plan to keep the house color. I snapped some quick pics of my roof and each of my neighbors. These were taken just outside my windows, so I apologize in advance they're not crystal clear, but it shows three kinds of asphault shingles. I've got standard in a dark brown-ish. They were here when we bought the house and are about 5 years old. I wouldn't be surprised if they're the cheapest level. We're the 4th owners in 20 years. Lots of move-outs and cheap fixes. One pic is my neighbor's roof where he did a light gray shingle. His was just done this past summer. He chose to do lighter to try to keep his energy bills down, the lighter color refects as opposed to absorbs the heat like a dark or black would do. We're in North Texas. The other neighbor's roof is a fancier shingle with more dimension. It adds texture for sure. I hope this helps. rjinga - where in San Diego did you live? LoL!! I am so guilty of this thinking with the hood (not this exact problem, but CFMs). But, your analogy makes perfect sense!
