non-damp rated bathroom lights: safety, beauty, practicality?

I've posted on the lighting forum and have not received any responses. Many sconces and over the mirror lights are damp rated but I've found very few ceiling lights that are damp rated. Is this because damp rating is a safety issue near the vanity were the electricity and water could conceivably be connected by a human touching both at the same time? And, on the other hand a ceiling fixture is so far from the water that one would have to actively try to electrocute oneself via this method?

The only other issue I'm concerned with is finding attractive ceiling fixtures that will stand up to the high moisture levels in a bathroom. All the magazines show chandeliers or some beautiful ceiling fixture in the master bath but I'm wondering how practical this is even if it is safe to use something that isn't damp rated. For all of you who have ceiling fixtures that aren't recessed how have they held up over time and are you happy with your decision?
