Breast Cancer Table

Kathleen mentioned she would be honoring all the Breast Cancer Survivors and those fighting the battle on her Blog. I lost my DM to cancer at a young age and was touched when I read this and wanted to join her. This is such a sweet thing for her to do.

I had planned on using my ornaments I bought last year for Christmas but they are still hiding from me! My turn Karen.LOL I'm thinking they are packed away out in the shed with my Valentine things.

The flatware is First Love by Rogers that belonged to a DF's mother. The plates were from TJ Maxx and Ross. This is my little brest cancer dish that has pink ribbons inside and each compartment in painted different on the outside. Kinda cute? Don't remember where DD & I spotted it but it came home w/me that day. I also made a few pink ribbons since I couldn't find the ornaments.

I bought the peonies and picks from DP. Used my lighted pussy willows and flowers with them for the cp. Bought the vase from Ross for Easter this year. Vintage girl is a Valentine vase but I let her carry some ribbons. Let's all march for a cure.

I am sorry that you lost your Mom to cancer.

My own Mother is a 11 year survivor so this is very special, thank you. :)
I'm sorry you lost yours , C is evil and such a terribly unfair issue :-(.

Well I guess we all know that buying these bulbs can be a pig in a poke, but they looked good and it's sooo very hard to resist. And, it's for a very good cause..your Nymph is beautiful but I hope I don't end up with another as I've acquired 3 already and I only bought one! If anyone ends up with a Jungle Star this year through a mislabel or otherwise please please let me know what you bought and where you bought it!! Kristi's Grand Cru is beautiful..I can't believe the number of flowers..time will tell what I get! Last year I bought about 25/30 bulbs from nurseries and about 1/3 were mislabeled but I have to joyfully say that not one was virused! I did loose a couple to rot though... Donna

Happy, I haven't had breast cancer but my youngest sister has. She was diagnosed with metastatic BC with multiple primary tumors (very aggressive) when she was 28 YO, 3 months after the birth of her daughter. That was almost 12 years ago and I'm so happy to share with you that she is living a healthy and happy life today. We will celebrate her daughter's 12th birthday in March with joy in our hearts that our beloved sister is here. Here are a few things she and we as her family did: -She scheduled her chemo sessions on Fridays, so her support team could really be there for her when she was feeling the worst. She would go in early, and I took care of the baby that day. Her husband was available all weekend and so were our other sisters (we are 5)and our stepmother, to be 'on duty' Saturday and Sunday. As a realtor weekends might be your busy time, but you can try to schedule your chemo so you will have a couple of recuperation days if you need them. -We focused on specific tasks. People will always ask 'what can I do to help' or say 'just call me if I can help'. And too often when you are sick and your energy is at a low ebb, it is impossible to be on top of everything, much less to be the case manager for yourself! So, instead of thanking folks, you can practice accepting with grace :). Don't be afraid of setting up a schedule for your friends, especially at church, to bring over meals a few nights a week while you're doing chemo. It can be hugely comforting to know that dinner will be on the table without you having to plan, shop, prep, cook and clean it up. Plus I don't know too many women who won't feel more than happy to prepare something tasty and bring it over to help a friend; as nurturers, it's what we do and it makes the giver feel terrific to help in such a concrete way. Or tell them you could use help on any number of ordinary things that might be a drain on your energy: running errands, picking up medicine, etc. As long as you are specific, my experience is that people are more than happy to do things. Picking something up at the pharmacy or the grocery store is easy when someone is out running errands. And, the more folks you have who can do X, Y or Z ror you, the fewer X-Y-Z energy and time drainers you have to worry about. Emotionally, I won't ever presume to say I know what you are experiencing. I do know that my sister told me, years later, that it meant the world to her to have people she could talk to about the darkest fears she was feeling. As the oldest sister, I wasn't that person...I was busy case managing all the stuff I wrote about above :). But she talked about the emotional aspects to another sister--for her, that was her safe person. I hope you find yours, and that you can have a listening ear able to be there for you. And last but not least I know that breast cancer treatments have made such tremendous strides that it is a much, much less fearsome disease in terms of life outcomes. Again, I don't presume to be able to tell you how to feel or not to worry. But breast cancer is a treatable disease and doctors have a huge number arrows in their quiver now that they didn't have even when my sister was diagnosed. Ann

My wife had a mastectomy 10 yr ago and because of a potential threat, all 21 nodes were striped out. Back then, that was the standard practice. Her lump was fairly large: A lumpectomy was performed while she was on the operatng table and the quick analysis said the margin was not 'clean' so the surgeon proceded with the full procedure including all node removal. It truned out that all nodes were clean and the removal was unnecessary. We also found that if the surgeon had removed just a little more material around her lump, the margin would have been clean and that would have prevented a lifetime of problems. Less than 2 years later, the recommendation for her case type changed and the new procedure became: remove the first node and check it. If it is ok, stop. It was our experience that removal of all nodes create a drainage problem. Fluid tends to build up for at least 6 weeks until the body can find ways to absorb and reroute it. These nodes are part of the drainage system for the infection fighters. The body did eventually heal, but a comprise remains. My wife has a lifing restriction of 10 lbs on that arm for the rest of her life. A larger weigth will not do physical harm, but the exertion can overload the drainage system and the muscles may be weak. it can result in a minor injury that will take a long time to heal. So my advice is: Do not let your nodes be removed unless these are PROVEN invaded. Over 10 years ago, complete removal was done to insure that an invaded node was not missed. In too many cases (back then) when nodes were left, they gave trouble and once the cancer invaded the nodal system, it is very late. Better (and faster) detection plus more research has changed the picture. Be sure to discuss with your oncologist.

You might want to have your Vitamin D level checked the next time you have your blood tested. I know my Internist now screens for D levels. My son had low levels and had to take a prescription dose of Vitamin D to bring his level back up to normal. There's also a correlation between low D and prostate cancer. Nana and MM, thanks for your comments. I miss DM and wish she was here to enjoy my life with. She'd love DD and DGD and all our shopping sprees. She was so full of life and a very sharing, caring smart lady. I know she's smiling down from above tho.

MM so happy to hear your DM is a survivor of 11 yrs. Take care of her and let her know how special she is every day.

Punk, I'm so sorry you lost your DM to the big C--me too, but I was only 3 months old so never got to know her, only stories from GP's and DA's. Your gorgeous rose plates just made me drool, they are so pretty, and I love how you used the beads too. Your lighted pussy willows are perfect in your arrangement and the little girl looks just right with this tc. We need to encourage all our DD's and DGD's to get their exams. I heard just the other day that there is a new and better way to get the chemo to the tumor by just injecting it into the ducts. Let's hope they keep coming up with more and better treatments. Luvs

Luvs, thanks for the comments. I didn't know you lost your mother at such a young age. No wonder you are such a nuturing mom, gma, wife and friend. So, so sorry to hear this. I was really disappointed I couldn't find my ornaments and almost didn't post because of it. You sure know how to make a girl feel good tho.

Wouldn't it be great if this chemo treatment works. My neice is a chemical engineer and she said in years to come they will take a cell and grow a new one when someone needs it. Need a heart, they'll grow you a new one! Almost more than one can fathom huh?

Such lovely dishes and accessories...especially that lovely CP.
I'm so sorry you lost your mom to cancer..and I didn't realize Luvs did too when she was just a baby. So very sad.
I lost my DM and DMIL to cancer as well...too many special people have been taken away leaving so many lives affected.

Thanks for this lovely table. It means so much.

Sorry to hear about losing your DM so young, but you really put your heart into this table.
Glad you didn't let the MIA ornies stop you. They'll turn up eventually, and your table is just gorgeous without them.
I'm loving the square peony/rose? plates! Those are gorgeous.

Great attention to detail and just like Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way!!

Jane, so sorry to hear you lost your DM & DMIL to cancer. Luvs losing her DM was a tear jerker alright. I had to set this table in my painting room since my Halloween table was already set so glad it worked out.

Karen, my table is bringing out alot of emotions. It's so hard to Love and Lose. It will be interesting to see where my ornaments are. I should be finding them in the next couple of months.

Candy, those plates are so pretty. Wish they would of had more than 2 on clearance when I bought them. I'm hoping to get lucky and find more at GW or ys.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments and on my table. Just got a phone call and DGD is on her way down so best finish my posting and get in the shower. Fun times ahead.

Such a lovely table, punk...my eyes were drawn immediately to the big square rose plates...with the lacey white heart plates layered & the pretty little bowls!...GORGEOUS!

Your centerpc is you...so beautifully arranged & love the new vase! Flatware is perfect for this t'scape & your lovely little vintage girl w/pink ribbons.

I am another who lost their Mom to cancer but my Mom was one of the first to be treated in our local hosp when she was just in her early 30's ...& she lived to be 78 but died of cancer & had a rough last yr. So thank you for your pretty table & your kind words & thoughts. & hugs to all of you who have lost loved ones. TFS. Jeanne S.

Jeanne your so sweet and always have the nicest comments. Thanks for sharing your story about your DM. I love that she was a survivor for all those years. Sounds like she had a good life until her last year.
