I would be concerned primarily with siren noise. Just last night, I had my 5 year old come down from bed because a firetruck was in our neighborhood and the siren had woken him up. I suppose, if you are from NYC, you have learned to ignore the constant noise and sirens, but if this is a more rural area, people expect quiet! In my small town, they need to build a new fire station. Every neighborhood in the area is fighting to not have it too near them.... we all need it, but we don't want it to be our next door neighbor. But, this is just my opinion, many others will likely not agree with my take!

Lived across from hospital in Buffalo. They had a policy to shut off the sirens the last 1/4 mile or so. But then this hospital was built on a residential street in a more urban environment - a rural hospital might not have the same concerns.

Either way, it certainly wouldn't be a positive. I imagine the topography is going to be such that most people would still get in their car to go to the hospital (so the close proximity is unlikely to be a good thing.)

I live in a suburban area now and I think the sirens are off when they approach the hospital. Wouldn't be hard to find out the answer especially if you work for the hospital system.

Our building lot is also very close to a hospital. Although the property does not adjoin it, we were warned of the constant noise, especially the helicopters. For us this was not a negative because our lot is in town. We desire the "sounds of the city." There's also a train yard close by so we'll have lots of noise!

We have a rental house beside a hospital. I think there are a lot of positives. If you ever have a heart attack or cut off your head with a chainsaw you'll be thankful it's so close. I once had to drive a child with a burst appendix 45 minutes to the hospital.

We've never had any shortage of people looking to live close to the hospital. Either nurses who work there and love the convenience, or older people who like the security, or people who need regular treatment. It's just convenient.

I don't think we'd have a bit of trouble selling it to one of the above demographics.

It's customary for hospitals to expand and buy out neighboring homes at a good price. Also, surrounding property is in high demand for satellite offices or medical-related businesses. You might find in 10 years it's worth a whole lot more than you paid for it.

We've never heard any sirens there. We've seen helicopters but not heard them. Our house is right across the street (small two lane road) from the hospital.

Of course, all the other cautions apply with regards to picking a nice neighborhood. Our neighborhood is a lovely quiet place to live. It just happens to be adjacent to a hospital. :)

Ask a realtor in your area. I would consider it a minus, not a plus. You surely know that health care is one of our biggest growth fields. This 'small' hospital will sprawl -- in stages -- with constant construction until it covers the 20 acres...and blots out the sun! (not really lol)

Our present home is near a hospital and I do notice the ambulance/police/etc., as well as the helicopter coming and going all hours of the day and night. I would rather not be so close if I had my choice again.

I used to live 2 blocks from an ER entrance. The neighborhood was in high demand because people liked living close to work.

I learned to sleep through sirens and helicopters (double-paned windows help a lot).

No one runs sirens very close to a hospital, it would disturb the patients.

The closest we ever ran sirens was about 4-5 blocks from the hospital.

I've got a bit more info.

1) I looked at the GIS map for the land the hospital bought, and it's actually NOT the acreage directly behind our lot - it's actually another 1/3 - 1/2 mile further south - right off the highway exit. There are a couple other country roads with private property between our lot and the planned hospital lot.

2) Our lot is about 3/4ths of a mile from the main road, so even if a siren went by we most likely wouldn't hear it because our road is heavily tree'd and very private.

3) The posted plan for the hospital is a four-story building. I didn't see a helipad listed in the plans, but that doesn't mean they won't have one. But I'm not worried about it. I would think at most the helicopter would be used 1-2x a week, which is okay by me.

4) I'm now very excited about the hospital being built, if only because I can put in for a transfer when the time comes and try to lower my commute from 45 minutes each way to 5 minutes each way! *lol*

2) You'd be wrong on that. We're three miles from our main entrance in a heavily wooded area. You can hear sirens - they are rare. 7 minute drive is a tornado siren we can hear when inside/windows closed. We are miles and miles from railroad tracks, but when outside you can sometimes here the whistles. We are even further (1/2 hour by car) from a motorsport park where motorcycles and Indy car race and we can hear their motors.

allison0704: I'm not saying we'll get NO noise - things like tornado sirens are important to hear!! But compared to where we live NOW, we'll probably have a lot less noise than we're currently "enjoying" - even with the hospital being just down the road.

Was just going by what you said "most likely wouldn't hear."

A helipad, or at least one that is frequently used, is unlikely unless the facility is intended to be a regional trauma center which shouldn't be difficult to determine.

Renovator - the parent hospital, which is about 20-30 miles from where this new one is to be built, has a helipad. I'm confident that even if this smaller hospital had one, it would rarely get used.

Ditto to what Peyton said - we live just down the block from an urban hospital in an area that often has weather-related power outages -- we're always the first street back on with very little delay.
