tiling half a bathroom

Hi -I live in a split built in 1958. The upstairs bedroom bathroom was once a sink and toilet only. The previous owners expanded the bathroom by expanding into the closet and installing a small shower. They tiled the shower area with square white tiles while leaving the rest of the bathroom with square pink and black tiles. I do not know how to put up dry wall and my husband currently works two jobs (and this is all new to him as well) - so I need to know...

Can I chisel off the pink tiles, attach matching white tiles to the existing wall, and grout? Do I have to put up new dry wall? I chiseled off one tile and attached a new tile - it is holding on great! But I am worried if I do the whole area that in a few months they will all fall off due to the moisture from the shower.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am sure you'll get better advice from people with more experience but my feeling is that once you remove all the pink tile you will find a wall that is not straight and clean because of the dried adhesive still stuck on the walls. Maybe if you can then scrape that all off you could do it but I know the tile will nee a clean, flat surface otherwise it will not all sit flat and I think the new thinset will not stick as well to old thinset (again others have more experience).

Hi folkman - thanks - when I peeled off one of the tiles, to experiment, the adhesive stuck to the tile and I was left with a dry wall that looked like a brown paper bag. So it was flat and smooth but it really is damaged drywall. I have a feeling the "others with more experience" are going to tell me "NO! can't be done," but we'll see.

Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. They're not stained; they simply have a couple coats of clear spray lacquer.

Thank you all! I chose to do one of the bathrooms straight laid on the floor and on the bath walls - just kept it classic. The other bathroom, I chose to do straight on the floor and staggered in the shower, for just a bit of interest.

As a real estate appraiser I would advise to try to keep it. It will reduce the valuation by a few percent. If I were to appraise your home, I would now have to compare and adjust it from a 3 bathroom home to a 2.5. That's anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000 adjustment downwards. Understand that I don't know where you live or your real estate market. Even though there is no bedroom on the floor, it's a very usable space. At the very least, I'd put in a shower. You just never know when someone will lose their mobility. It looks like an older home. If your laundry room is in the basement, you may want to reconfigure it to bring the laundry up to the main living area. That would be an improvement in utility and the only reason why I would consider eliminating it. Hard to see everything, but you could reconfigure the doorway/entry and take over that vestibule area.

Any ideas on how to paint dated bathroom tiles? Half walls? Colours?

I would paint all the wall tile white, then the wall above the tile and the ceiling all the same color - I think a light blue/green color would have a nice spa feel. We painted our kids bathtub and tile surround with marine paint (made for painting boats) and it has held up really nice so far.

I don't know that I'd say it can't be done, but it wouldn't be adviseable.
