Final List of Appliances: Last Check Before Pulling the Trigger

Hi,

The list below is my "final" list prior to pulling the trigger on my Kitchen next week. Are there any products listed below that any of you have direct knowledge of problems with that you would care to share with me before purchasing the items?

I have researched via this (an other forums) and Consumer Reports as well. I have seen a number of the item,s at my local dealer's showroom (refrig, dishwasher, microwave, washer, dryer, hood and faucet but I have not seen the exact model range).

don't need an air gap with the Miele DW.

I prefer ISE disposal's over Waste King for no real good reason other than size and looks.

The bosch W/D are nice units but can be tempermental. I have a set in an apartment and had a second set in another home. The apartment set gets used more and has been trouble free. The other unit's washer had multiple faults over the lifespan and I finally got tired of it and sold it. Brushes go bad, door switch failed and the pump never inspired confidence on that set. In that size and quality your other choices are Asko and Miele and both are more $$$

Regarding disposal.

I know CR says WK Legend 8k is best and Legend 9980 is the worst.

It has the same motor and internals.

The only difference is the mount. Screw on vs pro 3 bolt. The guys in the plumbling forum are adament that the pro 3 bolt is better. It is better long term against leaks. I trust the guys in the plumbing forum more than the nerds at CR.

WK lifetime in-home warranty. ISE 5-10 year warranty depending on model. I think that is more important than looks.

BTW: That is a serious hood/blower for that range:)

I well remember that your dw wanted a lower prep area, which I prefer, too, although not as low as table ht. But I totally respect her preference. My worry, though, is the sink height. My dad thought he'd do my mom a huge favor by lowering the sink counter at our former cabin because she was barely 5'1" and the rest of us dish doers weren't much taller. It ended up to be no favor, as we all got sore backs prepping or washing dishes. The counter at the lower height was one thing, but working down in the sink was that much lower and too much. If the counter is table height, the sink bottom will be approx 24" off the floor, unless it's a deeper sink, which will, of course, make it lower.

dibgar I understand your indecision about the dining room table. We also will have a dining room in the same space as the great room. I didn't want to put a chandelier because of the position of the dining table in relation to the entrance as people come in from the foyer. So I think what I will do is put 2 sconces on the wall next to the table (I don't know if you have room for that) and then put a can and 2 halogens on each side of the can (as recommended by Whitehead. In your situation can you consider a chandellier that is drapped across the ceiling from the wall (portable type). So in the event you move your table you can move your chandelier. Or else, have you thought about a round table. I think it might take up the space better than the rectangular one on an angle. That way you could put a can and even if you move the table, the can won't seem out of place (maybe.) I'm no expert on this lighting stuff and am learning as I go. I am just trying to use common sense and practicality to get me through the process. Try posting on the decorating forum. Those people have tons of ideas on everything. Good luck.

You can go on Joanne's website and search for Crypton. Link below. There are a number that are on sale now at half off. And the starting prices seem lower than on the Crypton website or on 'designer' websites. The 25% coupon is there on the right side of the page. Good only through today. But the offer does come back now and then - fori is right about that. In their stores there is often a 40% or 50% off sale for one cut of fabric. Other sites have Crypton for way less than you were quoted. DIYupholsterysupply.com has a huge selection, overhwelming really, at around $30 - $38 a yard. No Crypton currently in their closeouts ;( Newtoto.com has some great pricing on Crypton, $10-15 a yard, but maybe only 80 or so selections to pick from. Great deal if they have something you like. Smaller remnants of several yards are as low as $7 a yard. Good for a chair or chair seats. They send free samples promptly, and offer a $4 color chart so your take on the color is more accurate (Brilliant idea! I bought one). Warehousefabricsinc.com has good pricing and selection but more for drapery weight. I haven't figured out how to search for Crypton there. Schindlersfabrics.com also has good selection, especially higher end stuff, but again not the easiest to navigate if you are looking for something specific. My lessons learned... aren't great, but maybe they can help. Probably silly, but I learned a lesson there somewhere. :) I have to second, third, fourth, and fifth the previous comment re: fridge. We didn't think of this in our last house and bought a big side-by-side fridge. Guess what. It went along the wall, so we never could open the freezer door any further than 90 degrees. NEVER even dawned on us before it was too late. If you will have built-in appliances, do your cabinetry choices allow for small adjustments? E.g. what if that great micro drawer breaks, and the newer model is 1/4" too wide? Have you specifiedvertical/horizontal installation of handles/pulls? This may sound really silly, but our first cabinet shop installed the cup pulls SIDEWAYS, so they opened to the long edge of the cabinet. What?! They claimed they were sure we had discussed that... and no where on my order had we specified. In addition to opening fridge doors, make sure you can access more than one appliance at a time (if needed, depending on number in family, etc.) Also make sure your walkways are ample enough that you can comfortably access your appliances without having to do the hokey-pokey around your island, etc. I've recently discovered the importance of cabinetry placement relative to dishwasher exhaust, or vice-versa, as my parents recently discovered their birch cabinets have bowed due to a side exhaust dishwasher. Ok, this one is more on the appliance side, but still something I just never would have thought about. Make sure you know the exact formulation of the stain that will be used, or if it is "proprietary", buy some to have on hand. Touch ups, future additions, etc. will be very hard to match unless you know exactly what you're dealing with. Sorry this isn't much help, and kind of all over the place, but hard lessons to learn! :)

Pneumatic Switch, Hansgrohe, Air Gap. 4214620
I suspect this is the name of the Pneumatic switch for the
disposal and not an "actual airgap" that we normally associate with dishwashers. I have that same type of switch
for my disposal hidden behind the doors below the sink.
If I had it to do again, I would have had a wood panel made for it so the switch is Horizontal (Looking at you when you open the door) instead of mounted vertically like it is now and you kinda hunt for it using good "Braille Techniques"

Regarding the Bosch Axxis washer & dryer there just are not many choices in a cabinet depth washer dryer that can offer 3.4 cu. ft. capacity. The Asko, Blomberg, GE, Maytag, Miele and Whirlpool are all between 2.0-2.6 cu.ft. The Miele and Asko units are more towards +$2k and above. I have some space constraints and need a stackable cabinet depth unit into a 30" cabinet (room for vent). A full sized unit would stick out. Any other suggestions that have good performance, compact size, stackable with reasonable capacity?

And yes, I meant a pneumatic switch and not an air gap for the Miele.
