National Sewing Machine Day TS

Sept. 10 was National Sewing Machine Day so I set a table using the first sewing machine I received as a child.

It actually did sew a chain stitch, but wasn't perfect at it. Worked OK for me to make doll clothes.
I also used an old tape measure, pin cushion, child scissors that I used with the sewing machine, and pattern pieces as part of the CP.

I used small spools of thread and ribbon for the napkin rings and placed each one on an old pattern.

The plates, chargers, napkins, and tablecloth are TS treasures.

Candy, this is totally delightful ! I love all the red and white, such a pretty table. Makes me smile just looking at it.

That's OK. I just didn't want to be presumptive. I'm a novice compared to Annie, and I'd feel more comfy with her input, but I worked so hard to track down my machine, I just thought if there was some way to help, I'd try. The info that Ohio Farmer was a Davis, came from the forum Needlebar.com. But I wanted to confirm that. I started looking up pictures of antique Davis machines and hit on some with the duplicate body style and finally found one close enough to get exact decal matches. It's not all a bunch of curly-ques and even though a lot of decals are copied, most are pretty specific for machines and eras and can be a good clue in identifying them. You can't always depend on a cabinet to give you positive identification to a maker, because with treadles, many are interchangeable from one maker to another and you can have a National put into a singer cabinet somewhere down the line. But finding a probable maker's machine in the appropriate cabinet is a pretty good indication it's authentic to the original purchase. Your machine is in better condition than mine. I use mine and have for thirty years and it has been rode hard and put away wet. I would say yours is a vintage about the same era as mine. Our serial numbers are not far apart....another good indicator we have the same manufacturer. If you do have a Davis machine, and I think you do, it's a good machine. It is not their vertical feed model (one of their best and their signature model) but they did make standard feeds as well as walking feeds, and if you just Google them, it can give you the impression that's all they made. As for listings of serial numbers and manufacture date, it's going to get hairy. Unlike Singer whose numbers are well documented, Davis is more obscure. I can't find the site I used to use to track down some machines. It's somewhere on the puter, but I have so many sites I use.....I can't find it. If I do, I'll get it to you. But I can tell you right now your machine is older than 30s-40s and judging by the type of tension it uses....quite a bit older. I'm going to put the photographs here instead of emailing them, in case anyone else is interested in these machines (or has info they can share with us) it's searcheable. Yes, it's dusty. Sorry.

Old sewing machines are a dime a dozen. There is some small demand for them from specialized collectors. Almost every household used to include one or two sewing machines, and almost nobody sews anymore,( generalist comparative statement, sewing folks out there forgive me, it is comparative to the old days when everybody's mom, auntie and grandma sewed) there are many more sewing machines available than you might think! If it is in excellent working condition and you have the case/stand,attachments, bobbins, needles, etc, you could maybe get up to $100 for it: but it is a very specialized market and you would have to find just the right buyer, which may take a loooong time. If you want to sell it on ebay or craigslist a fair price would be $35 or so.

Got to the fabric store to pick up the small amount I miscalculated so I could finish a baby quilt! When I got home, I was able to finish piecing the sailboat baby quilt and the borders are on! WOOHOO!!! Picked up some Disney princess fabric for the second baby quilt (not my choice) but am still trying to figure out what I am going to do ... have a design in mind. I also got one square for the March lotto done and hope to cut a couple more. It has been a BUSY day! Also took my dog & granddog for a walk - in the crazy cold wind! Will work for another 45 minutes or so, then plan to watch a movie with DH. Didn't get to Sharon's Stash Attack quilt ... other than printing out the pattern. Oh well! Sue

I actually celebrated National Quilting Day a few days early with my Mom. The Southport Quilters Guild held their Annual Quilt Show at the Kenosha Public Museum (on the shore of Lake Michigan.) I knew it would be crowded on Sat., the 17, and it would be very hard for my 89-yr-old Mom to get around with all those people there, listening to speakers and such. So we went last Tuesday, the 13th, in the early afternoon, and she was able to use one of the museum's wheelchairs to get around. Very few people were in the quilt display area, so we had a wonderful time gazing at all the beautiful quiltwork. "Stars" was the theme of the show. I was inspired by the high quality hand and machine piecing and quilting. My Mom was intensely interested in the small "challenge" quilts displayed on one wall. The challenge was to design a small wall hanging (less than 24" x 24") using a color pallet of three shades/tints of a color plus only one other color. My Mom, being an artist herself, was intrigued with the creative landscapes/seascapes and tiny intricate designs of the quilters. Candy, what a sweeeeet table with your little red Sewing Machine. I had one just like that myself. Love your patterns, spools, tape measure, scissors and pin cushion you added on your ts. These are neat additions you've kept. Nice touch to finish off this table.

I think DSis still has mine. I'll have to ask her about this. Not sure why she's the one who ended up with it other than I didn't think I'd ever use it again.LOL Thanks for sharing this perfect table for Nat'l Sewing Machine Day. It should be shared across the web.

Ahhhh.... how did I miss National Sewing Machine Day, Candy? I'm glad you're keeping us all 'sew' up-to-date here on the forum! LOL! (you're a 'stitch,' girl!)

Ok ... really, I love this very creative t'scape! The 'pattern; pkgs under the napkins & the 'spool' ties, & 'lining' the table w/that checkered R/W t'cloth!

I may be a bit 'biased' but I love t'scapes w/memories ... & having your childhood machine still in your possession is like finding a 'needle' in a haystack! & the R/W place settings remind me of a 'quilt!'

When I think of you, candy, I think of 'ruffles' & 'frills' & like every table you share, this one is 'woven' w/love! TFS, candy! ~~Jeanne S.

Karen, Mary, Nana, and Punk, My DM still lives in the house where I grew up. So once I got my own home, many of my childhood toys were "returned" to me, LOL.

Some of the toys are still there as my DD's played with them when they went to Grandma's house and now the great grandkids have been able to enjoy them as well.

Jeanne, you are a "stitch" yourself, using all those sewing terms in your post!! Quite the wordsmith!

I actually was going to do a different table using a music box that looks like an old sewing machine that is covered with little mice, but I couldn't decide on the rest of the table. When I decided to use the little red machine, the table practically set itself!

Candy...what an adorable table.
I can't believe you still have your childhood sewing machine! Such a cute idea for a CP with the Pattern underneaith. You're so creative with the Simplicity Patterns and thread spools at ea place setting - really cute idea. Of course the Red & White theme makes everything
look so festive as well.
Love it all!
