Wet Grout Issue....Saved by Bill!

Last month we faced a situation where patches of grout in our 4 year old tiled shower floor remained wet in places. We had also discovered that the corner bench had been constructed of wood. We were tempted to go with an expoxy grout repair thinking that it would create a water barrier. Reading this, Bill warned us that using the epoxy grout would be a short term fix and that sooner or later the wood bench would need to be removed. Based on Bill's advice we elected to go with a tear out and replacement of the floor and the bench....cost $3,500.

Today they started the work and found the entire bench and part of the studs attached to the bench rotted from water damage. There was some mold. The wood acted like a wick and as a result they needed to tear out the wall tiles higher up than anticipated, but the studs can all be saved. Another few months of daily use would have completely compromised the walls and we would have had a huge repair. It looks like there was nothing wrong with the pan...the backed up water under the bench was constantly keeping the foor under the tiles wet.

Thank you, Bill. Your caution really helped and spending more money on this repair now saved us a lot more money in future repairs. I hope others can learn from our unfortunate situation....always check to make sure what materials are being used in your tiled showers and pay attention to tile advice on this forum.

Our new bathroom begins in about 4 weeks and you can bet that we will be a lot more shower/tile savvy!
