Unexpected color combinations for holidays

DreamGoddess' lovely integration of blue into her autumn table got me thinking about past holidays. My mother loved to decorate, but there were some real taboo colors at our house. depending on the holiday. For instance, she never would use blue, purple or any colors other than red, green, gold and silver for Christmas.

Me, I'm not overly fond of harvest colors, so try to balance them with something unusual-- purple or blue. And I think from a lack of purple growing up, I tend to use purple or lavender quite a lot-- for Halloween, Christmas, etc. (I often reflect how my mother would really DISLIKE my house, poor lady!...)

Have any of you moved toward non-traditional colors for things? I know Judith has done some beautiful Christmas tables in pink!

No "rights" and "wrongs" here-- just thought it might make a nice discussion.
