We tried barely beige in our living room and I didn't like it because of the pinky undertones. Change the bulbs change the paint and then see how you like it. I've got friends who waited a year or more before deciding on a splash. Do everything else - you don't need to finish the splash now to finish your project. You don't need more than a quart of paint - take your samples (counter, cabs and floor) down to the paint store, get them to recommend a couple of colours (tell them about the look you are going for - light and airy right?) take the quarts home and sample away.

Cabinet plywood (because it must be smooth) or mdf - short for medium density fiberboard. If you measure the depth of the space - it should be something like 5/8". Masonite is a brand name and traditionally refers to low density fiberboard. It's kinda hard to paint it because it absorbs the moisture from the paint and expands. The same company makes the other stuff (MDF) too. Ways to to tell the difference (aside from the sign saying this pile of stuff is MDF) is that MDF is available in 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4" thicknesses. LDF tends to be thin - like 1/8" and 1/4". Generally, one side of LDF has a finish that feels fuzzy where both sides of MDF will feel very hard and flat. The really bad news is you'll have to uninstall the hood to do it properly. Generally speaking the piece should go higher than the bottom of the hood and be attached by installing screws from inside the cabinet. Since you're painting, you can use filler products if you have to. Think about painting everything nearby while the hood is off.

Debra, Welcome back, sorry to hear about your mother. Gardening accidents can be catastrophic, especially if one is not up to date on the tetanus vaccination. The bacteria are often found in the soil and a bad scrape or puncture can introduce them into the blood stream. If you can't remember the last date of your tetanus shot, please go and get one soon. My second cousin died as a result of tetanus from a farming accident, so it can happen. Off my soap box now to say that your blooms are always so perfect and since you favor the pinks they're too hard to choose a favorite. Heidi
