High Quality Porcelain Calacatta Gold Tile Recommendations
Comments (2)I haven't seen the one Flyleft mentions (but I trust her taste) -- I saw this one in person and was *amazed* at how good it looked. Really, really good. (And to put it in perspective, this was the ONLY time I have ever seen a 'faux Calacatta' that I've ever even liked. I normally detest 'faux marble' tiles...) Comments (3)I have installed many white subway tile showers. I've priced subways from Walker Zanger, Home Depot, Dal Tile and Arizona Tile. The least $$ is Arizona tile at $.67 ea. They are thinner then the others, but it won't make a difference in waterproofing. I have always used light grey as the grout color because white turns yellow over time. You'd be surprised how "white" it looks. As for waterproofing- this can be done a few ways. We always have our crews lathe and float the walls and hot mop the pan (floor). Other like different products, but I find hot mop the best for custom showers. Your contractor will know whats best. Good luck!...See MoreUnited States Ceramic Tile Co. subways - quality?
Comments (8)I had bought a box of the USCTC subways from HD to work out some tile patterns with, since they were in stock and ultra-cheap and returnable. :-) An awful lot of them had pinholes in the glaze, or uneven glazing, and it seemed like there would be quite a bit of waste, which would negate your (very minimal) savings. They were also thinner than the Daltile tiles I ended up purchasing, and generally had a "cheaper" feel. I think it is pennywise and pound-foolish. Daltile's Rittenhouse Square and AO Greenwich Village are exactly the same tile - they're the same company. If you have time to do so, wait for one of HD's 20% off special order flooring sales to come round, because all tile, including trim pieces, is included in that sale. Home Depot can order ANY tile Daltile makes, and it usually takes 10 days to 2 weeks to arrive. Some of my trim tiles arrived damaged - okay, smashed to smithereens - because Daltile packed them stupidly in a flimsy box with almost no padding, and Home Depot arranged for replacement tiles, with extras in case some of the replacements were broken, at no charge to me. They were FedExed to the store and I had them in 3 days. You can also get Home Depot and Lowes coupons from many sources. Check with your individual store to see if they will take the competitor's coupons; some districts won't, some will, and ditto for coupons printed from the Internet. Call ahead and ask, and make sure you talk to a manager and get their name in case you get any guff when you get there. I have heard some HDs and Lowes stores will take hardware-store coupons, like Ace or True Value, so get on the hardware-store mailing lists. Home Depot coupons are sometimes not good at Expo, so read the fine print. Also read the fine print because occasionally the coupons are not good for special order items, or for sale items (they can be stinky with their restrictions!)....See MoreWhat brand white(ish) subway tiles do you have? $? Comments (25)I have the Crossville Savoy white gloss. I don't have that much backsplash so it wasn't a big difference for me, but I liked that they had a little more character than the very flat Daltile or American Olean. They are thicker and just slightly irregular. I used a light grey grout (sterling, perhaps?). My price wound up being something like $9-11 sq ft....See Moreacountryfarm
