local vs. internet suppliers

Our builder has discouraged us from buying product on the internet because local vendors supposedly will have a better guarantee on the product. The other issue is the builder doesn't want to store our product. However, our allowances are pretty skimpy in some categories, and internet prices are significantly better. I'm thinking specifically of plumbing fixtures, and perhaps lighting. How have others resolved this conundrum?

You buy it, you deal with all the hassles. From checking to see if it arrived undamaged and is the right product and finish, to being sure you're ordering every little tiny accessory that's required to go with it. Any warranty issues are yours to handle. Storing it is on you too. And if you mess up and forget something, you pay the trip charge for the trade to come back later and handle the install, plus you wait on parts. That's a big part of why contractors discourage homeowners from supplying their own product. Many don't understand that they don't understand what they are doing, and it slows down the overall build for the builder.

If you really know what you're doing, have the space, and order NOW, then go ahead. But, do check your local showrooms first. Most will match internet prices and give you a point of local contact if there is an issue.

We did internet searches for lighting and plumbing fixtures. The local vendors matched or beat several of the internet prices plus they guarantee the product. Also take into account the shipping costs for some of the items. Our bathtub was going to cost over $200 to ship. While there was no sales tax online, the shipping cost ate up all the potential savings.

Hi, I started buying my stuff online because I worried about the diseases and "pests" I would end up with when buying Big Box Store plants. They may be high quality to start with, but then they are transported and come into contact with any number of other plants and produce, which can cause cross contamination. I always ended up with those little nasty gnat things in my houseplants and then had to buy stuff to get rid of them. The other aspect is that most of these big box stores will not have any kind of guarantee on the plants. You can take them home, plant them and have them die overnight and you will not be reimbursed for them. That being said, I also had my share of disappointments online (I NEVER had good luck with catalogs at all). But...I've found a good place, with decent prices, a satisfaction guarantee and the best customer service anywhere. They even have a Master Gardener on staff to ask questions of and an extensive blog section (Latest News) with all kinds of pertinent information dating clear back to 2008 (I think!). I won't buy anywhere else now...unless I get too late a start and just want to plop something in the ground and hope for the best :) Hope this helps! Hey there, I'm not sure about the trees you mentioned, but I've been looking into trees under 20' this year. Still haven't made a decision, but have found many pretty trees and shrubs that can be trained as trees. Some shrubs grow to 30 feet or more! So, you might want to check out that area of plants as well. We need a "tree" under 20', no thorns, flowering would be nice, etc. (I like "lush" looking plants, which, surprisingly, can be found - with a lot of research - for a desert garden.) It turns out quite a few gorgeous flowering shrubs can be trained into trees. I have a decent list of them somewhere on our computer if you are interested. Otherwise, you might look up shrubs and small trees in one of the Sunset books or books by Mary Irish (really helpful!). Also, here's a link for free gov booklets on xeriscape plants. The one you might find useful for shrubs/ small trees is named "Landscape Plants for the Arizona Desert". http://www.ci.phoenix.az.us/EMAIL/emwtlitreq.html If you are interested in xeriscaping (more water for your trees if you go with a non-native!) the "Xeriscape" booklet has good info too. I'm originally from NY and miss the gorgeous trees there - and know not all of the desert trees you usually see are pretty, but I was surprised by what's out there that will actually thrive here. I read up on use tax, and certainly will pay what's owed at the end of the day, but still have to keep in mind that potentially lower online prices will mean lower taxes as well... Taking the "no tax" issue out of it, I wonder if they might deliver for free as all the online stores I am looking at will. I have printed out the 1 or 2 lowest prices I found online for each appliance. Don't know if these are from acceptable stores as far as the local's price-match policy goes, but worth a shot. I really want to buy from the brick and mortar, but we would like them to be able to come within $1000 or so of the online prices. Hope that is not unreasonable? If there is one item they are really far apart on, we may get that one thing online. I have not yet set foot in this local store (as I mentioned, it is 90 minutes away) but I have to say the customer service so far has been quite good. I emailed them to find out what exactly was in their showroom and have since exchanged 4-5 emails over 3-4 months with one of the salespeople about different products, etc. And they did offer to deliver/service outside their normal area for me. So fingers crossed for Saturday, I'll let you know how it goes! :-)

I think Daltile and Emser let you purchase material anywhere with the option of picking up at a local "pick up" center. Several of the tile manufacturers have distributors that are classified as pick up centers. You can actually buy somehwere else and the pick up can be locally. This could have changed, but we have used this method quite a bit in the past. Of course tile is very heavy, so if you may want to have your installer or contractor pick the tile up for you.

My builder also discouraged me from purchasing from internet sources. At first I stuck with his recommended list of local suppliers but their prices were much higher and the selection was very limited. I would have preferred to keep most of my business local but I wasn't at all happy with the choices. In spite of his admonitions I started ordering online. I ended up saving a ton of money and I didn't have to settle for the same stuff being used in every other new build in our area. I was careful to check every item when it came in and on the few occasions where the products arrived damaged , I called the supplier and they promptly sent me a replacement. I may have been lucky but I really had no problems at all.

All our plumbing fixtures, tubs, showers came from the internet, all appliances, flooring, im sure more (cant think of now)

Specific to plumbing fixtures, we went to local and then compared to online. The savings was astronomical even after contractors discount. We spoke with local, they said they couldnt budge at all so we went web, we so far are VERY happy.
