Buying plants thru online suppliers vs. big box or local stands
Comments (16)Hi, I started buying my stuff online because I worried about the diseases and "pests" I would end up with when buying Big Box Store plants. They may be high quality to start with, but then they are transported and come into contact with any number of other plants and produce, which can cause cross contamination. I always ended up with those little nasty gnat things in my houseplants and then had to buy stuff to get rid of them. The other aspect is that most of these big box stores will not have any kind of guarantee on the plants. You can take them home, plant them and have them die overnight and you will not be reimbursed for them. That being said, I also had my share of disappointments online (I NEVER had good luck with catalogs at all). But...I've found a good place, with decent prices, a satisfaction guarantee and the best customer service anywhere. They even have a Master Gardener on staff to ask questions of and an extensive blog section (Latest News) with all kinds of pertinent information dating clear back to 2008 (I think!). I won't buy anywhere else now...unless I get too late a start and just want to plop something in the ground and hope for the best :) Hope this helps! Comments (9)cottagecindy: "I see online thru Natl Builders supply and Builders direct store that the same toilet is only $304.50 then add the seat. I don't get it. Is it the SAME toilet made in the SAME location?" We are tireless advocates of buying locally to support local merchants, but we encountered a similarly large price disparity last year when we were looking to purchase a Toto Vespin II, so we compromised our principles and bought the toilet from National Builders Supply. NBS is located in the same neighborhood as Toto's United States factory (and Subaru of America's headquaters, FWIW). The toilet is a genuine Toto; we installed it one year ago today, and it has worked flawlessly for 365 days. The components of the toilet and the seat were packaged in boxes within boxes, using a combination of styrofoam peanuts and foamed-in styrofoam. The amount of time required to unpack the toilet should make you ponder if you want to pay a plumber's hourly rates to perform that (non-plumbing) job for you. Unpacking the toilet preferably should be done in a room that can be sealed tightly, as it will make the biggest mess you ever have seen, and the styrofoam bits and pieces all carry electrostatic charges that will make them cling to EVERYTHING. Getting the boxes and the removed styrofoam into a vehicle for transportation to another site after unpacking the toilet, and then disposing of them, will be another major job in itself. Bottom line is that, for the amount of money we saved, we would do it again....See MoreLivid at Signature Mktg / Local Dealer over Bluestar - REDUX
Comments (30)ya think - You are correct, I should not stoop to the tools level and thus will ignore the most recent posts from the angry appliance dealer, mschuma, and a few others. Let me just say - if people want to disagree, thats their choice. But when they choose to insult me, well then they shouldn't expect an all rosy retort. However - to make it clear, the two comments my "screw you" comment was directed at from the initial thread were: Man I love stories about greed and stupidity. and Oh, please! Don't get me going! People who turn the world upside down looking to save the last few bucks on some expensive appliance or luxury car and then go ballistic when things don't go to their satisfaction are one of my major dislikes Which were so far off base and completely missed the point of my post. In fact, on the initial thread that had some 80+ replies - I only posted twice. Yes just twice - the original post and a second one which said: Wow - this thread has gotten a bit crazy since I started it. I am not going to respond to a bunch of comments now (especially those smart-ass ones questioning my intelligence and intentions) - I will do so at a later time. I purposely did not name names in the thread other than asking for contact info at Bluestar / Signature, because I wanted to make sure to speak with all parties involved so I could make sure I fully understood all aspects of this from each party before I posted anything that potentially would impugne someone's reputation / integrity. That is why in my initial post - I said "without going into full details". Since then, I have spoken with the manager of the local appliance dealer, Mike for Indoorxs (who since he posted here, I have no problem now mentioning) and have a message in to someone from Signature. Once I hear from Signature, I will come back with an update and will provide more details. Not sure how my original post or my followup got anyone's panties in a bunch but as promised I came back to fill in the rest of the story for those who were interested. I appreciate their feedback on this thread and I am sorry some trolls have tried to hijack this thread by personally attacking me. I have posted on a number of other threads in this forum to be helpful to others. I believe sharing my experience in this particular case would also be helpful. Its too bad some folks don't feel that way...See MoreHancock and Moore: local vs. online
Comments (4)It really is a gamble. Many on the forum have had great experiences, others have had nothing but headache. Bottom line is that you can save $$ by going to NC or lexfurniture and if nothing bad happens, you've made out. It is a gamble though because if something does go wrong, you're out of luck and maybe even out of $$. I tried to buy a Lee Industries LR set locally but even after the local store gave me their "best" offer, it still was $1500 more than NC. I took the gamble b/c I needed to save $$ since I just finished a 2 story renovation and needed to save as much as I could. It paid off for me but I would rather buy locally next time just b/c I like to support the local dealers and b/c I was panicked that something would go wrong (luckily for me, everything was perfect). It sounds like you are in a situation where buying from NC is a better option than buying from SF to have them ship to SF and then have someone else ship to the Northeast. I would call around and check out some local places (I think Circle Furniture is in MA) to see if you can get a good price locally. If you feel that NC is your best bet, I would research and buy from a reputable place. I did hear that Boyles and LexFurniture are great for H&M. You can do a search on this forum to see how others have made out buying H&M from one of these places. Good Luck....See Moreamcook
