red wine on grout

A wine glass tumbled to the floor and red wine spilled all over the kitchen floor and onto the grout. We have tried a few things to get it out and the stain is better but still visible on the grout. Any miraculous cures?

I am not sure if the grout was initially sealed or not, if that makes any difference in cleaning.

Sealing makes a world of difference. You might try Bang. Very cheap, a dollar a bottle at Dollar Tree. You might also try a bleach pen.

The article below might help. (Bleach was my initial reaction too, but they say not to use bleach, as you might remove the color from the grout.) And as Lizql mentions, get a sealer. My flooring guy gave me a tip (sealing grout is pretty pain staking process). Get a baby bottle and put the grout sealer in it. You might have to puncture the nipple with a toothpick or something similar to get a larger hole in it for applying the sealer. (It's about time to do my bathroom again, and I'm going to try the baby bottle method. Using a craft paint brush was a real pain!)

Brand new kitchen. Beautiful white cabinets. So new, in fact, I only have it about halfway reassembled. Husband breaks an ENTIRE unopened bottle of red white on the White Ice granite and it runs down the face of the brand new cabinets. It was a good old vine zin, too. Did I mention that it's a BRAND NEW kitchen? With some newly-christened PINK cabinets? Every cleaning suggestion I came across involved abrasives except this bleach and water combo. I decided to give it a try. Took a little patience and gentle wiping, but within minutes the stain was gone. Flamingos will no longer be able to camouflage against my kitchen cabinets. YAY!

Thanks all for your sweet comments. To answer your questions: Slinky the pattern on the plates is Johnson Brothers Asiatic Pheasant. The other pieces are JB Old British Castles. Thank you again for all the advice and ideas! That's why I love GW! CEFreeman: I know that is a common mistake- I'ld like to think that most folks are now aware that above the fridge is the last place you should put your wine. But then again, what about olive oil next to the stove? That's the most convenient place to keep it, and where most folks store it, but exposing it to the heat is also bad for the olive oil. I am keeping my design the way it is, although we tweaked the cabinet so the bottom doors line up with the glass doors above. I've decided that the "crate" wine storage is fine for us- and I like the way it breaks up the cabinetry. No wine drawers available through Medallion, but I'm fine with it.

Welcome to my world, sigh. I had to give up drinking more than a sip or two of red wines due to the amines and the high tannic acid content and how that affected some chronic inflammatory conditions I have. Some of those compounds are unfortunately the very elements that give wines a lot of their taste appeal. And now, due to having to lose weight, I can't afford the calories. Hubs and I at one time had a heated debate about wine and sleep. Hubs drinks a glass or two of wine EVERY night, which IMHO is a type of addiction. He claims he needs it to relax and fall asleep, something he struggles with. I also often feel sleepy with red wine, but it has been shown through data and research that wine can help you fall asleep, but the effect wears off, then you wake up and have trouble falling back asleep. I guess depending on when you drank the wine, you also might find that you are groggy and then if you don't go to bed then, a couple of hours later find yourself in bed and not being able to sleep . . . On the plus side, it may not be healthy to do as my husband does and drink every day. I find that an occasional splurge of a glass of good wine can still be very enjoyable and special, a very different experience than if it is an every day beverage. I am TRYING to make water my every day constant beverage, but unfortunately I do not like the taste of water. It tastes metallic to me and even with some flavorings it still doesn't sit quite right on my stomach and taste buds. I am trying to develop a liking for it and for flavored but not sweetened soda water. Don't know if that's going to be possible, they may still be more like an "eat your peas" experience than a pleasurable sip. I switched to chamomile or catnip teas for an alternative relaxer in the evenings. But not too late, because no matter what, I try and avoid the middle of the night potty trip which can also then lead to a bout of not being able to fall back asleep. Not sure if you are in menopause either, but I found wine to be a huge trigger of hot flashes for me. And of course those interfere with sleep as well . . . but that's over with thankfully. But now it's the weight battle.

Does anyone have an actual brand name to suggest for the non-bleach containing cleaner to use that I can ask for at the store? I live in a very small town so no big hardware store to rummage through for products.

That's really what I'm looking for. Thanks!

I would recommend going with a commercial strength product made specifically for grout, rather than an all purpose cleaner picked up in a grocery store. There are two companies whose products I've used. Might not be readiliy available for you, but I'd suggest looking into them.

TEC: specializes in tile products, grout, sealers, cleaners, etc. So their deep cleaning grout cleaner might be worth a try. TEC products are readily available from a lot of hardware stores that carry flooring items as well as flooring stores. They also have a toll free number you can call for advice on which product to use. Perhaps they can offer a suggestion for the wine on the grout, and maybe let you order directly from them as well? If you go to link below and scroll down, you'll see a deep cleaning grout cleanser. Might work on the wine.

TileLab is another company who's sealer I've used. Works pretty good. I found it at Home Depot. If you go to their website they have a "Tile and Stone Care Wizard" . Tell them what your problem is, and they will link you to the product. I went there and chose "Remove Deep Set Stains" and they have a product just for that. I see you're from NM, if you click on "where to buy" at the left side of the page and it looks like they have a lot of dealers in NM.

Otherwise, when I Googled "grout cleaner" I did see an "Oxy" grout cleaner. Maybe that would be easier to pick up in a small town?

I know that on a new wine stain, if you pour table salt on it, the wine stain will be soaked up. You may want to try wetting the grout then pouring dry table salt on it.
