Another hex tile question

Id really like to do a cararra hex on the bathroom floor, but not sure its the best idea for our family. I found a porcelain multi color grey hex made by American Universal. Is there any chance that anyone has this installed?? Would love to see it in action. Thinking of pairing it with white subway tile for shower walls.

I would use a ceramic or porcelain for a family bathroom. Save the Cararra for your ensuite.

I used Dal Tiles White Hex on the floors and they look great.

Thanks. I think we will skip the marble for this bath and use the porcelain hex - just having trouble visualizing this particular multicolor hex. Im hoping it wont look modern in my 1920s house. I'd prefer not to go with white or black and white with 3 kids using this bathroom all the time.

I just put in the 2x2 hex tile from Olympia and it is beautiful. I bought it for the exact reason that it didn't have that peachy or pinky undertone and was very white. I have to warn though that by using a white grout it did make it read a bit grey. I can't tell you whether it will chip or not because I'm not done the bathroom, but it really is a nice look. I don't have young children so not thinking on much being dropped in there. I would advise if you are looking for something historic this has more of a modern feel to it but I would suppose it depends on how you finish the rest of your bathroom. I'm using white subway for the walls so hoping it all turns out how I envision it.

Cut the tiles out of the sheet before, and then when laying in the sheets, you can lay in the daisies at the same time. If you try cutting them out once the sheets are down, you'll end up squeezing thinset out of the grout joints. If you wait till the sheet dries, that'll work, but you have to be carefull about not putting too much thinset on the backs of the tiles, and keeping them flush to the rest of the floor, etc.. Much easier just to do it all at one time.

Yes, you can use different colored grout for the floor, but as I said in the other thread, the Platinum would work well for the hex, as well. The only other color I'd personally consider would be the Delorean Grey. Which ever one you use, though, you want to use sanded grout on that hex tile.

Yet another asbestos tile question

I'm fairly familiar with this issue as I worked for an environmental regulatory agency for many years and dealt with asbestos abatement. I've also -- like tens of millions of people -- owned a home with vinyl asbestos tile, and asbestos-containing vinyl flooring. You're right to be cautious, but you also shouldn't be paranoid. From your description, this tile currently poses no hazard...unless you start tearing it up. Professional abatement could be expensive, and it's not necessary. I would suggest that you nail/screw down a new subfloor right over the existing tile, like 3/8" plywood (underlayment grade with no hidden voids), and then put the flooring you want over it. You could both glue and screw down the new subfloor if you want it to be super solid. If the floor is only mildly uneven, the new subfloor will smooth things out. If it's badly uneven, put down some leveling compound and then the subfloor. Yes, this will raise the floor level a little, and you'll need to take out the tub temporarily to make it easier, but this approach will not be that difficult in the long run. I like it, but it looks like the multi-gray only comes in shiny - and isn't shiny ceramic tile on the floor too slippery to be safe? I agree with you that gray is much easier to keep looking good than either black or white. But I see your point about the random gray looking modern in a '20s bath. All the baths from that era that I've seen involved either solid field tiles with another color as an accent, or an even (not random) pattern. On the other hand, many of those period color combinations look truly hideous today.

I am hoping that having so much grout will make it not so slippery. I also hope that if I pair it with beadboard and subway tile, and an old fashioned looking pedestal sink that it will come off retro. Ugh. I give up. Way too many choices, and everything I really like is so far out of my budget its laughable.

We've used this manufacturer twice and the tile is good quality and inexpensive. I've never used the hex, though...only the penny round. You can see the penny round in my clippings in our kid's bath.
