narrow counter + travertine top + sink = disaster?

Has anyone heard of this - I've chosen a travertine top (durango gold) for my powder bath vanity. My sink is the smaller Kohler Ladena (18x12). My fabricator is telling me that I can't use the Kohler Ladena sink because my vanity is shorter in depth than most vanities (it's 19" deep) and the sink would be too big and heavy for the travertine, which is a "soft" material. He then says I have to use the Kohler Caxton sink (which is oval, as opposed to rectangular), which he says is lighter - because it is smaller.

I've compared the measurements of the two sinks and the Caxton is only a 3/8" shorter than the Ladena! Will that really make a weight difference? Maybe because it's oval rather than rectangular? I've tried researching this question, and haven't come across anything that suggests that a travertine top can't support the weight of certain sinks if the supporting cabinet is smaller than the standard depth.

And the faucet isn't a problem front to back - we're mounting it to the side.
