Sliding door for a small closet?

We have a small closet in one of the bedrooms that is 24" wide. Any suggestions on how to close it? In otherwords, I am afraid that if a traditional closet door is put in, it will look too small and be too narrow once framed.

I was looking into sliding doors-any experience with these?

Too late for pocket doors without extra $$$$ to frame them in.

Its a closet for a little boy who will one day of course be a young man...

If you do not have a pocket door a pair of sliding doors makes access to an already small closet that much harder.

Just put a smaller door in.

This likely would have been a good place for a pocket door.

When you say sliding door do you mean a barn style door that slides along the wall surface of the room outside the closet? Or do you mean sliding bypass doors. I have to assumer with a 24" closet that you mean barn style sliders like this:

If you do try curtains, use curtain rings. If you use the rod pocket to hang the curtains, it is somewhat difficult to slide the curtains back and forth. The few times I've seen this, the curtains mostly stay open all the time. But if you use rings, the curtains will slide back and forth easily. You can whisk the curtains apart, and then close them with a sweep of your hand. If you'd rather have doors, why not get a handyman to give you an estimate of how expensive it would be to alter pre-fab doors to fit your closet? It sounds like the only thing keeping you from doors is the extra work involved. If you really want doors and don't want to do the work, it might be worth paying someone to do it for you.

We prefer the bifolds a LOT. We do not put the bifold on a track at the top, so we can swing it out of the way. To keep it from going into the closet, or pantry, there is a stop only at the top, The bottom of the bifold swings freely, and I do not have to worry about hurting my feet on any track, or getting dirt out of the track either. We are also going to use these bifolds on our master closet. With french door style, 10 lights per panel. We are putting clerestory windows inside our walk in closet, going into a room bumpout which will lead to removal of a pair of windows and the loss of that light source. So we will still have the light, still have the wide closet opening, and we will have privacy as well with no curtains. The bifold french style is sold by Home Depot. Check the brand Pinecroft, which they generally do not stock but do order for you. Plus, you can always mount the doors with separate hinges on either side of a doorway, making them look like a real pair of french doors. I've done that before. Looked nice.

It looks like the large panels in the center are the ones that have 2 panels glued together and don't pass underneath other doors. If so, I'd hang art on each of the glued panels. I'd also arrange or replace the lights so that only the artwork is highlighted. If you need light for inside the closets, can you mount some boxes in there? If you have small children I'd paint the doors for now...either the same as the wall or a shade lighter. Is the area temp controlled? Just wondering why you'd need a dehumidifier if the walls and floor are covered and there's heat down there. Can't agree with your contractor on the barn doors warping. I think he just didn't know how to deal with them.

yes bi fold doors, not sliding. You have no room for sliding. Actually, I don't know that you even have room for bifold. That is an odd sized door opening that you have. My experience with bifolds is that they come in 12" wide segment or maybe 15". They are for 48" wide openings and 60" openings, etc. You don't have any multiple thereof with 39". I have never seen an intentional closet in such a position. I doubt that was part of the original floor plan. Is it possible to eliminate this closet and put a free standing piece of some kind in it's place? That corner space is so awkward as to be of diminished value. It looks like you could eliminate that one piece on the wall and thus eliminate the "closet".

Have you thought about a pair of doors that open in the middle? I don't know if they would have any that would fit in a 24" opening or not.

I wouldn't do split doors that open in the middle because then you would lose space on both side due to hinges being on both sides. The barn slider would be nice or what about no door at all.

Unless you have a problem with the door swing, a 24" door won't look too narrow. The advantage of a conventional door over a sliding door is that you can also use the back of the door for storage.
